Gonna need a new name for on-chain zaps. They're not Lightning. There is no "zap" involved. Someone call up the head of marketing and put some top Nostriches on it.

Call it Plapping. That's the sound of the devs jerking themselves off for figuring out "What if we used a DIFFERENT private key as a BITCOIN private key?! WOAAAAHH!"
I second this Nostr is confusing enough already. We should be consolidating the complexities, and making it more flat for the baseline experience for beginner users, and allow advanced users to customize their own experience more precisely once they figure it out. The money transmission layer should be as secular, open, and versatile as possible.
Hear me out Noob: What is a zip? Pleb or whatever you are calling each other now: It is a tip from a zap. Everyone knows what a tip is...so now it is a zip.
Lightning is the universal layer. We don’t need ecash zaps when LN can already handle ecash, without the shared mint issue. Don’t call this turd “zaps”

What good is an IOU I can’t even prove was sent to me with not even a single piece of proof to say that they are a scammer? Or, even worse, an IOU that may have been passed through multiple people, any of which could rug me without any risk of being identified. On top of this, everyone has to have trust in the same mint, which is impossible.
Just use the right tool for the right job. Doesn’t work well with random people I agree. Risky over long periods of time offline I agree. Keeping commerce flowing within a community that’s been knocked offline though? Making a transaction on a plane with my friend? Somewhere with spotty signal for small amounts? Let’s use our imagination before dismissing a tech entirely.
Let's call it a "tox" as it is as toxic as the combination of taxxing + doxxing
Only one of these usecases is realistic, and in that case barter or people signing IOU’s is going to be much more likely to work (with proper accountability) than ecash which can be rugged with 0 reputation risk.
If someone gives me an ecash token I can’t know how many people or who has already passed it. And if any one of them rugs by spending a token they already gave to someone else (or giving the same token to two people), you have no way to know who did it
onchain is doxxing. lightning is just fakable receipts. the only legitimate public display is cashu but even then you still have to verify the mint actually is legit anyway. the whole zap receipts thing is stupid. people spending energy on this when much more important issues like the endless flood of openclaw posted trash is flooding relays and feeds
Imagine the following scenario: You’re inside a country that got temporarily disconnected from the internet. You can use FIPS to communicate with a local Cashu mint and keep transacting. This is not really offline but you wouldn’t be able to transact bitcoin otherwise.

100,000%. There's too much circle-jerking. I'm vibe-coding some apps I want to see and I'm avoiding mentioning Nostr. I mean I can generate them an account and tell em "this is your username/password, copy em somehwere!" without being evangelistic about nostr or definitely not bitcoin. We must learn: Most people will never come over as long as we keep mentioning bitcoin lmao.

Bro agreed lol. Zaps are NOT what's gonna be popular about these sites for normies.

Yep. Normies do not wake up wanting zaps. They want apps that do not eat their identity. Zaps matter when they disappear into the UX and still pay the people making the feed worth reading.
I always say an NSEC/Ncryptsec should be displayed as a master recovery key rather than an “NSEC” and if users want an explanation just add an ℹ️ logo that explains more about Nsecs. Some platforms already have master keys that overwrite hackers, etc. so I think that concept is more familiar to people.
