Wait for the lawsuits when someone tries to withdraw their 940 Bitcoin and only receives a few sats 😆
Practical for mainstream adoption. Looks better than 0.00001234-whatever. If it helps no-coiners and noobies come on board, then i accept it.

the merchant can select sats or bitcoin ( at least in dashboard )
Extremely confusing to "normies" as they probably know that one Bitcoin costs thousands of US-Dollars as seen on the news. Btw the exchange rate has decimal digits? 940.96 Sats for 1 USD? That's very precise, lol.
What are you talking about. They MADE THE DECISION to use the bitcoin symbol for satoshis, it’s not like it’s a draft feature 😂
Amazing rollout but “forcing” this display unit while the whole network already uses the bitcoin/satoshi standards is non sense. It’s equivalent to using the mile unit in Europe, nobody does that and it just makes it more difficult, confusing and error prone to interface with Square bitcoin.

This whole discussion on 'are those fractions of a bitcoin called bits, sats or just bitcoin' I get it for the newbies, 'Satoshi's are cents?' hmm. 'Is is not some other crypto coin?' Bits sounds most sensible to me and sats feels nostalgic, but bitcoins? 🤨 I image only some whale hodler some day might by accident send me 2000 bitcoin thinking its 2000 sats/bits. Wouldn't that be horrible.

i can’t accept. how do u see a whole bitcoin? i really wanna know. or lets just do-away with 100,000,000 altogether? asking it only feels like restart for those who didn’t buy bitcoin at a dollar. OR u must be thinking a dollar is a dollar whether its 100 thousand or just 2. shouldn’t change names just because we want fractionalize it. damn u got me thinking. i don’t wanna like it so stop. lol.
I dont like it either. But I have a sense bitcoin UX specifically, will optimise for userw that are not like us.
They are working on this for a long time and it’s a massive change to their whole codebase, database and accounting principles. So no. @jack has been pushing this non sense (IMO) for a long time already.
Sats are sats. We also have a great symbol for it, although not in unicode yet. If ₿ is sats, how do you type 100m sats (1 Bitcoin)? Or is the idea to completely ditch the 100m number and reactor everything as sats/₿?
Bruh you just missed a teaching opportunity for 4 million businesses. Sats has been established for awhile now. wtf.
Loving all the responses. I can see sats being called bitcoins and as ngu whole coins will be referred to as Bitcoin, plus they'll be referred to less, like we use trillion but just not as often as smaller denominations
Except they're not Bitcoins. Lemme ask you is there $100 in 1 Dollar? Sats are the standard. Change it back and keep this train going. No one asked for this. No one uses this. Just you. You just unilaterally decided it. I'm not saying you don't have the right. It's your company. By all means do as you please. But this is confusing as hell and does not clarify or distinguish anything.
And a lower case b with a squiggle up top does? That's a very poor argument to make. No currency symbol looks like anything to anyone until they're told what it is.
I can't select sats in cash app. Only Bitcoin or Bitcoins... Differentiated by a word or a symbol. Fucking retarded.
Which is why bits are also retarded. Currency should have a full unit and a smallest subunit. Nothing else makes sense and we've never done it any other way.
Bad argument. Let's make a new unit for 10s of cents. Does that make that way make more sense than cents? No. Smallest subunit is what's defined in currency. Bitcoin has 8 decimal places. The smallest subunit is what should be defined. Not an arbitrary decimal point.
It also has the advantage of being in the available unicode set on most machines (because it's a symbol for the Thai Baht, which curiously is divided into 100 "satang"...) The original ₿ started off as an appropriation of the ฿ until a proposal was accepted to add ₿ to unicode: So we'd just be repeating this process for the lowercase for sats :)
The Thai Baht ฿ was originally used as the Bitcoin symbol until ₿ was added to Unicode. We can repeat a similar process, temporarily appropriating ƀ until Unicode adds a lowercase b with a vertical stroke.

Wait I got my facts a bit wrong. the ƀ is not associated with the baht. but the overall point remains: We use ƀ until Unicode adds a "b" with vertical bar, like it did for ₿
Or we could just use the miscellaneous symbol that a lot of people already use for sats and already exists in Unicode U+2BD2 ⯒
Oh whoops I meant 100 million bits / sats per bitcoin, not to make a new decimal point. My bad. I think the name just makes sense, “how many bits in a bitcoin?” 🤷
Way better but I still like sats better. Plus it's phonetically similar to cents.

So back to cents for its sounds a bit like sats and whenever those smaller units come into play we call then 'naks' from Nakamoto. Or is there any nice bit(there it is again) of the name Nakamoto to take that flows well, sounds fitting for the world to use? Nakas, moto, kamotos? In a century a coffee may be 20 naks, a night out with the misses, some 5 star wine and dine makes you spend 1 sat and 300 kamotos?
1. wtf is that thing - it has no connection to any existing symbols or semantics 2. ether already uses it 3. a lowercase "b" is clearly related to the uppercase "B" and makes everyone happy - the people who want the "B" in there can compromise, and the people who want "sats" can be happy we're not using the "B" and can adjust to "b" meaning "sats"
People are already very, very accustomed to thinking in terms of Dollars and Cents. They can easily swap in whole "bitcoin" for "dollar" and "sats" for cents. Giving them symbols that are obvious (a lowercase "b" seems like a "little version" of the uppercase "B" they've seen everywhere) seems like a much friendlier ramp from stuff they're used to than some bizarre tree-looking thing. Bitcoin is weird enough and has enough new concepts as is.
I guess in a way you lowercase b idea is easy to understand and adopt, but the sat symbol on multiple different services is a vertical line with 3 horizontal lines going though it. But you've converted me 😂

This argument doesn't make sense in a sea of counterexamples.
right, its just "the thing" because people liked it. they might also like the "b" - maybe more? honestly, the "call sats 'bitcoin'" crowd is powerful and influential (especially with Square now) so just practically an alternative proposal that is going to have a chance can't ignore their success and try to do something else entirely - it probably needs to be a kind of concilitory response to the ground they've already gained. hence the 'b'. "we get it, you're winning. will you compromise and at least just not use the uppercase 'B'? we can agree to that compromise". its like that.
2. ETH uses Ξ . the similarity to the ultimate shitcoin is too much for me 3. and this 'sats symbol' isn't a made up convention? it's all made up, we're making it all up. we've got a chance to make something up that a wider audience will be able to recognize. you really don't think that lowercasing a subunit doesn't have an immediate rationale to it, even for the uninitiated? besides, the convention isn't *entirely* novel: in computing, bytes are B, bits are b. chemistry: m vs M (molal vs molar concentration) math: p vs P (probability value vs measure)
I thought the ϟ are bitcoin (lol I have lightning bolt saved as keyboard thing for word sats) thing was just a troll. It's silly imo, but don't care too much. I like bits too, since playing a little poker recently where that denomination of chips made the most sense. The kebab symbol is overly complex and probably got upvoted because it felt like more impact per vote. Who wants to vote for boring "b"
But it's somehow less confusing to pluralize it and remove the decimal? That's not how ANY currency works. Everyone has to be explained something at least once in their lives. Sats is not that hard to understand.

I'm just saying if we're making it all up, you can't pretend like lower casing is some kind of well-known convention for currency subunits, when it really isn't. I get the rationalle of it, but it's not convincing. A b will cause more confusion, because it's unclear what it stands for? "Bits"? "Bats"? Sats are absolutely not bitcoins (boo BIP-177 👎), and the symbol for it shouldn't even hint that way. Besides, we have a symbol for sats, and it's an interesting, beautiful, meaningful and unique one. 😍
