That feature on Nostr would be a game changer
"free speech" is a distraction.
free thought and will is what's at stake.
how do you filter just generally so that the information you're getting is more likely to be informative
that includes even people just talking to you
The content based DVMs could easily be fed with a couple of lists like search terms, avoid terms and musthave terms. Clients just need to implement it.
There will be always signal (and noise) created by a minority and distributed to the majority. Either by big tech or big gov (which are the same after all). If you don't want to get sucked up in the tides of time and daily politics, then better don't use the internet.
Have multiple "expert" algorithms that curate feeds for specific topics and flavor.
Then let the user customize a scoring function that mixes the expert feeds based on user-defined weights. Maybe add some WoT spices on top.
Voila, the recipe for your favorite dish today. 😊
#nostrOnly baby
Nostr should function like a personal mobile phone,
Where only you have control over what you're viewing and consuming.
- Curate a custom list of content creators, similar to a personal contact list.
- Enjoy a custom feed, like a photo gallery you love browsing.
- Link your bank account to easily send Sats to anyone.
- Join custom groups for hobbies and topics you care about, just like WhatsApp groups.
Be your own cook and feed yourself.

That's make sense. 🤔
Will nostr eventually have algorithms?
#Zaps are a voluntary expression of value received. Why not build an algorithm on maximizing perceived user value, rather than ad impressions?
Some people are missing the point of consuming content. you don't need algorithms at all. Choose what you want to view = follow the people that post what you want to see. Stop allowing others to feed you
1. I am a bit drunk
2 I’m absolutely fed up with twitter. It’s not reflecting my opinion. Is it because my opinion is shit (I think what’s happening in Palestine is the definition of evil and anyone who supports it is outright supporting genocide and I frankly think they’re psychopaths) or is my opinion is the majority but being censored?
3 either way I think I’m right
4 nostr if it’s truly decentralised and censorship resistant is a welcome change.
5 BUT are we just creating little pockets of minority opinion which will become amplified in an echo chamber of their peers?
5 if we are, is that a bad thing?
6 I don’t know BUT i do think all opioin needs to be expressed. What may be unacceptable now may become acceptable later and if these unacceptable options aren’t expressed they die and we all suffer in the long term.
This is one of the most profound things I've read in a while.
Goes along with Marxist Herbert Marcuse's essay titled "Repressive Tolerance" where he says the leftists must suppress the thoughts of the right to the point that the thoughts of the right do not enter the mind, while extending tolerance to the left, even if the left is violent.

#optout. Tailor your client and algorithms to you, make it yours. Program it, it's fun. Or ask a programmer to help. Let different algorithms be dropped into the clients. Rotate them. Try a random algorithm. Dont stop until its perfect. Everyone should be allowed to do this.

note13f6dleq8psask3t5xph066vqqkx9acw3cct2znh6mh4r2rhm7tts3adwn5Everyone was born with the ability to have free thought. Free will. Everyone can be an independent thinker if that person wants to be. The sad part is that most people don’t utilize what they already have. It’s easier to be intellectually lazy, compliant, and follow the masses. It’s harder to have an independent thought that questions/challenges authority, do something different, and stand on principle. Add in public shaming, guilt, censorship, imprisonment, etc. and the average person will just “go along”. Those in control know this. And use it as a form to exert more control.
Until people realize the power lies within their own free will, they will continually give away their power to those in control. Free will = choice. There is power in choice. Everyone has the power to choose.
Absolutely. I will be mentioning this in my talk about creating your own algorithms to fix this problem. 🧠
This
Someone should do a talk about this at Nostriga 👀

Profound.
Take your also pill Jack, it's safe and effective.
Well said! It's true that we all have the ability to think for ourselves, but it's often easier to just follow the crowd. The real challenge is to use that free will to make our own choices and not just go along with what others say. It's a reminder of the power we each hold. Thanks for sharing this perspective! Just remember our free will is given to us by God. And what is given by God should not be taken away by man.
Isn’t this exactly what Bluesky is trying to offer?
I would love to log into those apps and see content from people I follow, not outrage porn which leaves me feeling a certain way, within 5 min of scrolling (usually 60 secs)
Free speech and free thought are part of a feedback system, you can't view them in isolation as you seem to be suggesting, they are prerequesites for the possibility of one another.
Something that still happens on X/Twitter is suspending accounts with no reason given. It happened to me on January 8th 2021, but I'm not bitter with you. it was actually a blessing in disguise. At that time I had heard of btc, but didn't fully understand it. I opened a Telegram account and ran across a group talking about btc and bought my first sats in March of that year. I decided to open another account when Elon changed it to X, but you can definitely see the algorithms hard at work. Once again thanks for the blessing in disguise.
Wonder what would be on jack’s algorithm?
As more news platforms integrate vertical data sets, with the intent of these smaller data sets providing personalized recommendations when you turn them on, users will be able to customize their news feed and recommendations results. We need this discoverability layer for factchecking as well. If the user wants to turn them on, of course.
Yeah it’s a slopfest. Now that everything tries to pay out for engagement, everyone eventually starts to hamster feel reactionary information or interest bait.
Very little intention and a lot of bad entertainment
Then why didn’t you fix twitter while you were ceo?
Could have done something to prevent this from happening?
It already does depending on what client you use.
He was CEO, but not in charge.
Running a public company that size is difficult to make change.
Very much indeed
When people have a distorted view of what is normal or acceptable they place boundaries on what they are willing to consider.
1. Censorship of content.
2. Self censorship of speech.
3. Self censorship of thought.
4. Limited future outcomes.
This is the matrix in a nutshell.
I am suddenly reminded of Orwell and his Thought Police cracking down on thoughtcrime…
@jack And the custom algorithms are openly visible in what they’re designed to do and can impact the full user experience. They could handle search, filter, sort, and can leverage the content, the interactions, the connections, social tangents, and more where the protocol allows.
💯 like this

It is a mess. Everyone will flock to Nostr after his mayhem. I've learned to appreciate and feel very grateful for this technology and its developers.

🎯
Why are you still using other platforms?? Weird.
Just restructured my following. Helped
💯
Exactly! on X accounts get a cut of the ad revenue. The algorithm becomes self reinforcing where people keep reposting the same content that is getting views elsewhere.
Show me the incentives and I will predict the behaviour…

I think the option of 'curating your own algo on nostr' is a little rogue atm. Here’s a tip tho - head over to nostr.band and key in any word that interest you. A bunch or people and conversations around it will be listed out - add them to your follow list. Rinse and repeat - And your timeline will be more curated by you, for you. advance search like dvms are still wip, but nostr.band is steady.
Good luck with the talk! You’re gonna do great!
Are you still on twitter’s BOD? Push for open sourcing that algo. Others will follow?
Isn't it already?
Nostr feels like fresh air in this mess
@rejon what is a traverse?
👋
Free thought you say? We're working on bringing knowledge content to nostr. We hope to enable permissioned and permissionless collaboration between groups. There's also a level of navigability and organization afforded by nostr that hasn't been exploited yet.
1) youtube videos converted into articles, using the transcript partitioned by youtube chapter and then uploaded to be navigated by other users. (near completion)
2) nostr devs putting their code on a nostr knowledge base and then new nostr devs learning by looking at implementations similar to what they are working on.

You did a podcast? Awesome. Gonna check it out!
@jack Hey Jack and everyone!—I was truly inspired by these words earlier today so I wrote this article on Medium, referencing your note. Let’s get Nostr to the people! Feel free to share! ✊🌎

Don’t you want the ease of use sometimes ?
@jack can you please record a short video share where you discuss this exact topic.
I think a lot of us are yearning for your opinion on this topics since you know a lot ABOUT the topic.
Honestly, a lot of respect for you. I would love to know how you:
~ Interact with algorithms
~ How to recognize foul actors
~ How to delete foul actors in the space
~ How you consume online to shape your worldview to be grounded, rational, and as least 'programmed' as possible.
Ty in advance.

When I see the same content on YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram Reels. There is something wrong about the way their algorithms chase the same things.
Yes
He’s explained this numerous times
Even this is limited. The people on Mastodon say the same thing, “you’re your own algorithm” but it still leaves a lot to be desired. Following hashtags, accounts and keyword filters obviously help but it still leaves the experience half empty
They do offer. Ultimately, Jack wants Bluesky’s custom algos but within Nostr. Bluesky becoming a company, having server control is limiting

A lot like that actually
by default we want our own bubbles. the danger may be exclusion from relevant info by choice.
nothing's wrong it works as intended
Not so much related, but I wanted to tell you that leaving this online-dopamine-hit cycle was the best thing I did for my health. I deleted all my social media accounts back in 2019, except for twitter.
This year I made the decision to actually remove myself from twitter because I noticed how enraged certain posts from my feed would make me feel.
Little by little, I was projecting that rage onto the real world. I realized I no longer wanted the online world to interfere with my physical reality.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that no matter the opinion (positive or negative), the amplification of it, will eventually warp our sense of reality.
After the first few months of being completely cut off from social media, I started noticing more the kindness in the world. I also noticed how comfortable I became with boredom.
Regardless, this is not related to your op, but I wanted to share what worked for me and hopefully will work for you.
I want that here, too. Been calling for it for a while.

#nostr must be a breath of fresh air for yoh
why not arrange tiny algo-parts to create your individual curate
I just see TikTok on x now
No Noise, Just Signal.
Also on LinkedIn and all the others, no surprise their are all the same now.
The ability for the user to view the code, choose, edit and create their own algo would be huge.
Thanks for that. Yes I can see the anger slipping into everyday life.
A selection of open source algorithms would be great.
Absolutely! The current state of algorithms often leads to a homogenized experience that stifles creativity and diversity. It’s crucial for users to have the power to curate their own content and break free from these echo chambers. Customizable algorithms could empower individuals to discover unique voices and perspectives, fostering a richer online environment. Let’s advocate for more user control over our digital experiences!
thanks! its just a rough sketch i did a few months ago but there are a lot of room for improvisation esp for 'own algo curation part'. And also the option of 'saving a setting' so that someone else can use it, and that becomes an algo marketplace of sorts
The algorithm isn’t about what you’ll want to see. It’s about getting you to what the advertisers pay them to put in front of you.
yea, its still manual atm, but its always interesting to see how people go around it and find creative ways

I like the sentiment although my experience is different.
My gf is being targeted with Kamala.
I scrolled her feed on ig and twitter the other day.
I am being targeted with Trump (on twitter mostly).
Neither of us are American.
Bizarre.
The power brokers are working hard at convincing us there is no free will. With no free will, there is no free thought. If you don't believe in free will, you give up on thinking for yourself and yield to false (fiat) authority. With no free thought, free speech is neutered.
Bridging algorithms can be great as an alternative. We need choice!

The algorithm should sort by post frequency descending, say over the last rolling x days.
This positive feedback loop incentivizes *using* the platform. Which is necessary for survival.
We likely need filtered views of nostr that are shareable. Would be grand. We all become 'algo' creators
