New friends regularly learn we have 6 kids and comment, "I don't know how you do it". I'll let my nostr friends in on a little secret. Kids don't have to be a burden. Our culture keeps people infantilised into their thirties now. This is my young daughter. Every day she walks across our property, fetches our goats, milks them, filters the milk, cleans up, and brings it home, rain or shine. You want to know the craziest part... She loves it and takes pride in it. Everyone in our household has responsibilities from a young age. If you ever read this, I'm proud of you , baby! Daddy always loves you.

She isn't even 10 yet. But even our 5 year old has chores!

Haha got one straight to your profile instead. Man we are looking for land right now and have a mind to do the yurt life. It’d be interesting up here. It gets to -40 here in the winter. Would definitely have to have a rocket mass heater and double walls. And it’s hard to keep water in liquid form here in the winter when on the land. Just researching models this past year that my girl is in college, and getting out of town soon after. Trying to stay in town and keep things kind of predictable till she finishes. But your place looks like about the best place a kid could possibly grow up.
This is the way kids should be raised😊. And you are so right about modern culture making it ok for grown people to act like they're too young to have responsibilities.

Having one kid is the hardest IMO, 2 a little easier, and so on. They look after each other, play together and teach each other so much
Very cool, we have 6 as well all close in age. We’ve been teaching our kids life skills from the beginning, and now they can cook a full meal on their own, with our oldest only being 9.
The work to fun ratio is starting to flip to more fun then work for us but it is because we started young.

I only have two, but if you give them agency and responsibility, they are a joy to be around, and actually helpful.
My kids have FAR more freedom than a lot of their peers, but they know their responsibilities, and I let them make decisions on their own.
Most parents are too afraid to give their kids the freedom. It’s not their fault inherently, when all we do is project danger and fear as a society.

Fiat economics turn everything on their head. It really sucks that so many young people are disgusted by children.
It does take a lot of upfront work but it has been such a joy! I'm trying to soak it up but I can't wait until they are all young adults. I daydream about the things they will be capable of.

Yeah! This is true. When they are really young it is tough at time. But with teen children help to alleviate this. Just have to keep pumping them out. 😆

Thanks, friend. Yeah the cold would be tough in a yurt for a real long period of time for sure. It is possible though. I know some people who survive Canadian winters in them and they were popularized in the Mongolian steps where it is wicked cold. You have to keep the fireplace going 24/7 and you hit the nail on the head with water management. The actual toughest part of winter in my opinion. We are in TN so winters are pretty mild. We usually only have two or three weeks of truly cold temps when we get arctic blasts every year. We will have to have all of our water systems inside during those snaps.

It was cool I just did a land clearing job for one of the local indigenous bands who were setting up a youth camp and they ordered 4 yurts. They showed up in crates, and the band already had octagonal platforms on screw piles ready. And concrete board down for the wood stoves. I’d love to get one when we get our land.
