Nah we have tons of art, music, and permie content too.
Yes, I know Derek, I was just being sarcastic, it's a British affliction.
I love the ability to customize your own experience. Just another way nostr is superior to other platforms.
Sounds like life
Oh no! Haha
I'm not sure what would be left other than porn and spam.
i guess as part of the onboarding process you could have a user select topics that they definitely aren't interested in and don't want to see those topics.

YES PLEASE
As long as it's really easy to turn it off. I say temporary because it only matters when the amount of topics are small. If you mute bitcoin, GMs, and nostr dev chat, this place is pretty quiet and people may also want to leave.
Hmm. I don't believe so. I'm not a Damus mechanic though.
@Vanessa @jb55
Art, music, homesteading, permies, feet pics.
Doxxed 🧐
He talks about other stuff. Such as his love for Justin.
And unfilter those words once Bitcoin reaches the price you deserve.
Ya you can mute stuff
I just looked in Damus and didn't see how to do it. Plz halp?
You can add mute words in the muted section. On TestFlight you can just highlight the word directly and mute that way as well
Click your pfp
Then click muted
We still get situations like this person who joined and was scared away by enthusiastic bitcoiners pushing him to setup wallets and learn a ton of stuff he isn’t interested in.
@npub10vhq...g0fp
Solid 🤘🏼
Wait…who are these people who don’t like Bitcoin? “We call them poor”
terminal velocity lol
Maybe one of you guys can help me figure out how to update my profile photo on my nostree.me page? First seem to cary over from Damus since it also uses nostr.build

Oh nice! Directly from the feed is cool. Thanks
I can't believe I didn't see the huge Muted section 😅 Thanks.
devil's advocate
This is the profile that prompted me to make this note. It's sad because he's a creator and would have loved Nostr if he took more time to understand it before getting scared away. This is a loss for us.
@rabble this is an unfair characterization.
As far as I can see his reply feed is full of people saying there is a lot of choice, and instructions on how to remove things the newcomer is not interested in.
The bigger thing we are up against isn’t bitcoin people, but rather BigCo social media conditioning social media users they are powerless and toolless to modify what they see to their liking.
Maybe this deserves an onboarding disclaimer or two

@Linda
The problem isn't Nostr, the problem is that they can't let others be who they are
Which client is that in the screenshot? I’ve been looking for an iOS client that has a “mute word” option 😅
It is! These are the things that most people don't realize.
This is what you're making people do now you Bitcoiners!

Quick! Someone find a 1-tap solution to mute all Bitcoin content. We can call it "HFSP Mode"!

If you don't like Bitcoin, but still like Nostr, here's one simple trick to remove the vast majority of Bitcoin content! Add words like Bitcoin, BTC, Satoshi, Blockchain, Timechain, UTXO, etc. to your mute or filter list and most Bitcoin content will be gone!

I block the word "bitcoin" here and there. After blocking, if my feed feels empty thats a sign that I haven't done a good enough job curating who I follow. If more than 10 to 15% of the posts I see relate to bitcoin thats a sign that I have more work to do.
I thought #bitcoin content was a feature of #nostr !
If someone blocks #btc than their #zaps should be blocked too :-)
Just saying ..

I won't... I live with it at peace ! 🕺💃🔥
This is an attack on #bitcoin .. where is my plastic swords ⚔️ :-)
I think this person’s experience is an opportunity for the Nostr community to reflect on how we welcome people to the protocol.
There is an assumption by many here that Nostr = Bitcoin and vice versa. But there are others here as well as people who want to be here who are not into Bitcoin. They don’t care if you are, but they are not.
There is very little room for folks who are not into Bitcoin or zaps or wallets to simply be here and talk about their interests.
Everyone in that thread was super nice and had no ill intent, however most assumed incorrectly that everyone who joins Nostr is into Bitcoin and zaps and sats.
This person could have been personally scammed by crypto or had family with a bad experience etc. We don’t know bc instead of taking the time to get to know them and recommend accounts to follow, we simply bombarded them about zaps and sats and wallets. It’s the equivalent of handing a stranger who has only eaten overcooked meat and potatoes some sashimi and expecting them to eat it and not run away.
If we want to grow Nostr we need to meet people where they are. Get curious. Ask questions about their work. Share some accounts to follow or topical relays or other cool apps.
Giving them the space to get curious on their own is much more likely to spark interest in zaps etc.
... and then GFY
No you.
At least on Amethyst it removes so much more because it applies filters to bios and nicknames. Too many false positives. Thus not so useful
It’s not that the people replying weren’t friendly and welcoming. And we have lots of people who are interested in music or photography on Nostr. It’s how he felt “this place isn’t for me” rather than, “oh this is how I find the music and photography people”
And I think all of the replies made Nostr seem complicated and overwhelming. Just like how most people never change a single setting in the software they use. We’re a community of tinkerers and early adopters. Folks who want something that “just works” aren’t going to want to read more onboarding instructions or spend a bunch of time learning how nostr works.
this, and also nostr algorithms
if i’m being honest, i think nostr has the easiest and most frictionless signup to the point where you start to customise what you see. that’s a good starting point! no email or phone number required, but i think we might need to work on the “setup wizard” part which personalises the “platform” to your liking.
i know it won’t be easy since it’s up to tons of clients to do it themselves, but i think we have a good start but could do better with helping ppl understand the importance of their nsec & help onboard them a lil better
> we might need to work on the “setup wizard” part which personalises the “platform” to your liking.
💯
The final 10% of personalizing is key. I have some ideas to test.

🤣😂
Need to show this to my wife, so she finally comes here. 👀
Sure, but good luck discovering it. I'm not saying that one can't painstakingly sift through the shit to find something else to follow. But the onboarding experience for me was driven by and toward a handful of large Bitcoin and Nostr accounts that now dominate my feed and the people I interact. Discovery has been a tedious experience and one that I have largely given up on. Maybe I am the problem here, but expecting the average person to stick around is goofy in my opinion.
For example, this is what I get for the first three pages when searching for music as a keyword.
Development is happening at an incredible speed, but I don't buy that excluding Bitcoin and Nostr content will result in a sufficient feed for the average person. Even the artists and musicians I have discovered came from my Bitcoin feed. They're Bitcoiners who also do art and music.
None of this is a bad thing at this stage, but I don't think the UX or userbase exists to attract and retain people who absolutely do not want to see anything related to Bitcoin or Nostr specifically. It's all in beta, which is why I haven't recommended Nostr to a single normie in real life. Even my Bitcoiner (lite) friends aren't interested.
I think it will require some branded application that doesn't advertise ties to any Nostr protocol or Bitcoin stuff and offer people a very easy way to manage keys. We aren't there and people leaving quickly is exactly what I expect. I tend to think we shouldn't taint people's view of Nostr this early on by recommending it to people who aren't at least somewhat interested in Bitcoin and relevant tech.
I see myself as a beta tester here and nothing more.
And the noob sees this on the most popular client for one of the two major mobile platforms.
Stuff like this isn't going to keep average users around.
It's going to be okay with people like us, who are already here.

It's oh so quiet!
Shhhh! Shhhh! Shhhh!

Keep utxo. He makes great content and code!
Imagine not liking bitcoin
Not everyone fits in the same box. But also most only believe what they media tells them about Bitcoin. There is a lot of FUD out there. 16 years of it.
I mean I’d love to find the other side of Nostr as well. Mine is pretty one sided.
