If you want to verify that the package you got was the same binary, you would have to have a predetermined hash to compare it to. The claim is that you can transfer the APK without internet, not verify it. To verify you need to know the hash.

These days, I can't shake the feeling that we're going to need an app like Bitchat very, very soon in this age of censorship and mass surveillance. Everyone should install it on their smartphone before it's too late.

Cool. You can also use LocalSend to send any installed app on your Android to another Android over WiFi. Not sure if that feature is implemented in iPhones.
Everyone should have a Meshtastic mode installed and running on their phone. Those will reach 3 miles in the city and 10 miles line of site between mesh nodes. It's a much bigger mesh network.

When I was at school, this is like, 16 years ago.. we could already send files over Bluetooth.
I would download music, put it on my phone, then Bluetooth it to my classmates at school.
Now retards think that this is some new technology because they built a tracking app that uses Bluetooth to ping your device information and metadata to local law enforcement

I downloaded the app. And from the idea it is somewhat interesting. To have locally bound communication.
And the cool thing is to have random connection.
But I really doubt the uecase yet. I feel for it being somehow applicable, many people around me needed to have the app installed at first. And then they would need to look at it at the moment we are around eachother.
I see so many probabilities, that speak against Bitchat. And maby a handful that actually are useful.
The big problem with privacy and the lack of it keeps being the same. Usually people do not feel, that they are watched. And when they feel they are watched, they think it is ok as long as they are watched just the same as everyone around them.
I get where youβre coming from. If BitChat required everyone to be staring at their phone at the same moment, yeah, it wouldnβt make much sense. But thatβs not really how it works.
Once the app is installed and Bluetooth is on, the phone just quietly participates. People donβt have to actively open it or think about it. Itβs basically a passive relay that sits there until itβs needed.
The useβcase isnβt βdaily chatting with random people nearby.β Itβs more like a backup layer for when the normal stuff fails β storms, outages, dead zones, whatever. In those moments, even a small number of people with the app installed is enough to create a working local network.
Most folks donβt care about privacy or decentralization until something breaks. BitChat is just meant to still function when the usual infrastructure doesnβt. Itβs not trying to replace anything β itβs just a fallback.
Ok. Still I think wherever Bitchat works, I could also just whisper whatever in someones ear.

For personal file transfer bewteen your phone and your Linux computer, the traditional SFTP transfer is still more convienent as it integrates right into some file browsers, such as Material Files.

Sorry I simply used a confrontal way to hear usecases. My mind failed to bring up some good ones but a lot of non-usecases and the general dificulty to convince anyone, to install an app.

I wonder how it will work if only one phone gets hacked by gov. Would it disable whole network during protests?
On protests you need devices with no internet connection, cameras etc.
If you rely solely on phones gov will remove photos/videos they dislike.
