The immigration debate is a complicated issue that intertwines legal & illegal immigration, the concern of cultural change, strain on the welfare system, the absurdly overcomplicated and expensive legal immigration process, the desire of native-borns to protect their jobs from competition, and a dozen other issues. Until people are willing to separate each of these concerns and address them one-by-one, we're not going to reach any form of clarity or consensus.

I think you have it wrong. From a law and policy creation standpoint, which affects the entire country negatively for years, that last one isnโt at all in the same category as the others.
And by the numbers illegals really do take more than they contribute. Thatโs a major danger on welfare programsโonce you implement them it gives you the right and obligation to identify and surveil everyone to make sure those contributing get the benefit and that those who donโt arenโt stealing value they didnโt create.
