Derek is great for this
I Would love to help out daily
🐐
Yup. Many of the existing clients are awesome and could do all the things we want, they just lack the resources to pull off their vision.
I also thought if you released your own client, everyone would want to switch to yours because of your reputation and ability to self-fund with all the bells and whistles everyone wants. It has the potential to fuck with the decentralizing goal.
Then there are all the smaller projects and unknown devs who are building incredible apps at a complete loss (financially and time) due to a labor of love and a general desire to contribute to open-source and decentralized environments.
Opensats is great, but I think multiple sources of funding is what nostr is really missing.
Thank you for your service and I look forward to seeing what you release.
There is a huge contingency of npubs leading this charge. A few major players tagged here:
@Adam Curry @boo-bury @ChadF and 33 others @Sir Spencer, Wolf of KC 🐺 @DuhLaurien ✌🏻👽💨
🤙
sounds like what you did with bluesky
i think nostr as a whole needs a reddit like experience badly!
also we may propose some projects around "well curated AI".
Deberías conocer e intentar hacer algo en conjunto con la comunidad bitcoiner más grande del mundo @La Crypta
don't they still rely on key send or no?
@calle Cashu + BTCPay Server = ❤️
It seems to me like this is a bigger development push to make things more integrated and interoperable. Podcast 2.0 is incredible and a seismic shift but i think with Jack's weight behind it, a closer more seamless integration with nostr and money for UX development would make it easier to onboard artists and fans, fostering a wider and deeper connected community. In turn this would move it from a niche product in our corner of the internet, to the masses. Not just trying to keep the lights on, I want to see this whole thing level up.
I think so. But from a non techie perspective, I've got to imagine with some funding they could figure out bolt 12 integration or some other methodology that is more seamless.
This is a reply to your message.
i dont get the difference from legacy social media then, most people see theres something wrong but decide to remain on those platforms, the exact same thing could happen with popular clients. there is a clear need of expansion and diversity within the #nostr space
and i personally think that could be achieved if we market and talk about nostr a lot more and also create innovative features. only then people would be interested bc its not some sort of remade social media but a whole new different thing.
Thanks for the response! Let's keep chatting.
Interesting conversation!
thats the complete opposite of what nostr users want. we need more clients, more relays and for users to be spread on as many relays and clients as possible. otherwise whats the point of using nostr? we want decentralization, not a new X or Bluesky!
Nostr have 3 years, what good client do you see? I see no one.
All clients have a lot of bugs, are ugly, miss a lot of features.
All people that I know complain about the apps not working as expected.
We can have a lot of clients, I don't care, but we need at least one great client that is able to compete with big tech ones in features, UI, no bugs...
In other words I am going to buy #Nostr
Old school 🤣 Is the short code NOSTR available?
I don't know the technical hurdles on the rss side but I'm seeing it integrated in a lot of the latest lightning applications. Ocean pool and coinos to name a few.
I wish we'd leapfrog lnaddress and go straight to bolt12
bolt 12 zaps would be amazing
Coinos.io makes it extremely easy to spin up a wallet for valuesplits. It's custodial but that's the tradeoff. It does have a function though that allows automatic withdraws to another wallet (say a self custody non bolt 12 wallet) after your balance reaches x threshold. Could be a very viable workflow that makes onboarding a lot easier but we need bolt12 support in the splitkit or whatever is being used on the back end on rss side.
there might not be a big array of efficient clients rn but as the nostr space gets bigger and bigger we have:
- more developers (we already have more of them than big tech companies do)
- innovative features and ideas
and a bright future ahead. a lot has improved in 3 years, nostr will do its thing as long as we work towards client and relay diversity. lets give people a lot to choose from, users should be able to make choices. #nostrfreewill
I mean it's much easier to get a bolt 12 human readable than a lnaddress due to all the DNS indanity. twelve.cash exists
Do you want ideas from users who aren't coders or developers? I have thoughts......
If you centralize it into one big corporation then what?
Thats really cool Jack

Those topics could take a VC approach... Grants are nice, but they are limiting our thinking on sustainable revenue models.
have many thoughts on this and have been diacussing it endlessly foe thw past year how to unlock decentralized commerce and compute.
i also believe that grants might be the wrong approach for it, you want something along the lines of small business loans, at least partially. grants lead to proof of concepts and lack market feedback while something similar to small business loans or basically seed capital without venture path might make a lot of difference.
bitcoin/nostr has tons of potential for small cash flow producing projects that do actual commerce but get too often either snowballed into something that is venture capital scale and then fail when they figure out that the market for it doesnt justify the size (or is 15years away)
grants on the other hand attract a lot of development of things that are engineeringly interesting but commercially completely unviable.
my point being is we want to incentivize people to build businesses not proof of concepts @jack
I believe i'm building a part of that vision, probably!

jack, it is a great thing to set up a special fund for Nostr. jack's donation is the only source of funds for most Nostr developers besides their own funds. Nostr needs efficient fund allocation to support the rapid development of Nostr.

The current funding is structured in a way that punishes building teams. Teams gather their own momentum, animate others, and are resilient.
@GitCitadel has been feeling beleagured and unwanted, from the beginning, because we're more engineers and scientists, than hackers. We're now one of the biggest, longest-running and most-productive and innovative projects, and we're unusually efficient with costs, and still get no good press or grant funding.
Most people have never even heard of the #Alexandria project. I keep seeing people mention integrating AI and nobody ever brings us up, even though that's a major focus of our project and we actually have the expertise and personnel to implement it, and have already begun doing so.
I don't know if a new fund will change that, tho.
My gut instinct is to run when I hear the word "VC", but I share your sentiment on wanting to be self sufficient @aljaz and @Vitor Pamplona. How do we build corner store lemonade stands that are open source and able to sustain is even though the user base is still small?
We should have all of them: lemonade stands, grants and VCs with high velocity capital. Whoever wins, wins.
Sounds awesome, it would be cool if related to this we could provide ideas for infrastructure projects (I’m currently working on learning design).
True, different people different approaches and different goals. VCs are good at accelerating things that work, so there is probably room for symbiosis between them and creative npubs..

Promising 🚀
So, that's the rough part about an open and decentralized protocol, right? There's no central vision and no authority to provide one.
Anyone can build anything they want and user experience is therefore very dependent on the developers of each individual client.
We might see some change with what @jack is proposing here:
More cooperation to improve the protocol and applications built around it would be welcomed, for sure.
I'm a but of a weirdo in that I enjoy trying out new and unrefined technologies, and particularly those that look promising for improving freedom. Yet, I know that most folks aren't like me. They want the freedom, but they also want a good experience.
To some extent freedom will always come with more responsibility than what folks are used to, but good design and sensible defaults can also help with the learning curve immensely.

how about one to add nostr to meshchat and reticulum.network, and go off grid.
Jack I'd love to give you a tour round the Plebeian app... and tell you about the full vision.
is just one installation and demonstration of the first app.
It's a content management system and focusses on both communities and commerce. 100% nostr/bitcoin native.

I suggest creating a nostr infrastructure fund. Offering micro grants for the relay network, funding for storage providers, funding for bandwidth. This could be as simple as setting up an open collective. The people that run the nostr relay network work hard, get no support, and no thanks for it. And sometimes even abuse. So most have left. But it's never too late. It's always good to help the relay network. Because without the relay network, there would be no nostr.

allow us freedom and choice.
no illusions of it.
Nice, what about creating more simplex clients?
👀
Nice, looking forward to seeing what comes of this!
Because simplex is just telegram from ten years ago. NOSTR private messages are far more secure beyond doubt than whatever simplex is promissing.
Don't be fooled again, telegram was enough.
Telegram is not foss and i can't helfhost it. But if nostr pm will be private that's great.
Why? We have clear evidence that public/private partnerships are commie, @jack. Can you give examples of what you mean? Maybe I missing something.
fucking missed it. I want in next time
wut?
SimpleX is nothing like telegram. ten years ago or now.
Looking forward to seeing you here!

That is like saying that canned tuna isn't the same as canned cod fish.
You are technically right and yet you are still missing the point.
It is just like telegram 10 years ago:
- Open-source
- Russian-owned and developed
- VC funded
- Staggering privacy promises
- realistically only 1 client implemented
- free servers from VC funding
That isn't private. There is zero reliable guarantee that their app won't be sending clear texts messages to some gov when your IP is deemed as "interesting".
Contrast that to PGP-alike NOSTR with hundreds of volunteer servers and dozens of client implementations where you can even send messages by paper if needed.
By all means, please do convince anyone here to place hopes on that telegram 2.0
No, I will continue to use simplex.
Tremendous!
ok so,
you cant host your own telegram servers.
and you dont have any privacy guarantees from them if you use theirs.
SimpleX cant read your messages,
by design.
even if you're using their infrastructure.
telegram can.
and you can always run your own Simplex relays.
SimpleX messages are always encrypted.
Telegram has option encryption in a closed source context.
these are big differences.
but sure i guess, don't use it because Russian people.
But muh Russia, Russia bad! Even if the Russians know the importance of privacy due to their country egregiously violating it!
Oh dear god. Still missing the point.
You are not compiling yourself the client and just blindly install binaries onto your personal phone
You *can* host a server but realistically you don't, nor do 99.99% of the users.
Yes, it is an improved mouse trap despite the very obvious red flags everywhere.
Congratulations, and enjoy the cheese!
What do you think VC money is provided for? Humanitarian reasons?
It is a business, care to guess who is the product?
Sure, that's why you're here right now. 👍
Those who choose to self-host, thus increasing decentralization and censorship resilience while also ethically benefiting from establishing reliable private communication.
Read from the source, and not federal agents and/or privacy LARP'ers who'll heap praise on fucking Signal and Session as if THOSE aren't compromised.

SimpleX - the first messaging network operating without user identifiers of any kind - 100% private by design! iOS, Android and desktop apps 📱! ...
You do realize that on that page they are literally inspiring themselves on Signal and "improving" the business model? 😂
Oh well. You will eventually get it after a few more years of promises. Enjoy the carrots! 👍
no dude
your "point" is Russian dev bad and muh VC monies.
nobody compiles the app themselves, that threat isn't different on nostr either.
the security models of SimpleX and telegram (if telegram could be said to have a security model) are completely different.
so what, you're worried they're going to distribute a malicious build.
why is Simplex a bigger risk for that than anything else?
Yestr! @BTC Map keen to explore the community-commerce overlap.
That's an incredible initiative—fostering collaboration across Nostr clients and technologies will definitely drive meaningful innovation. Can't wait to see how this vision unfolds. Keep us posted! 🧡⚡
Coupd be a very interesting fit!
I use both, but for messaging only simplex.
Please stop. You don't know what you're talking about. nostr private messages are not synced by any central server. The protocol doesn't lend itself to having very reliable Private messages. For privacy, on nostr, there are a few ways to DM and not all clients use the private way. If they don't, it's terrible for privacy. If they do, well you better hope it's battle tested and that your recipient is using a client that supports it, and if it does you better hope it's programmed well enough to reply in kind instead of insecurely.
@Vitor Pamplona I'm seeing 1190 reactions + all the other stuff on this note. Opening the "little party" doesn't crash or even slow down #amethyst for me. I can scroll it all if I want. Awesome, awesome job 🚀
lol, gov shill jumping out of the cave.
NOSTR functions on the same principle as PGP. The privacy of these messages is beyond doubt since decades.
Shill harder 😂
You are already messaging people here.
Time to send private secure messages too.
Bro... You're embarrassing yourself. Nothing about event signatures is encrypting messages. Tell me what nip defines private messaging on nostr and how it achieves it.
Not you ... I knew the answer. He clearly doesn't understand privacy on nostr. It's not a good protocol for reliable private messaging.
And that defines the gift wrapping scheme for nip44 which is used for NIP17 DMs and you better hope any other client involved doesn't switch to nip4 because it doesn't do NIP17. And you have to make sure you're signing the right thing. Oh and let's hope the two people talking are using clients that support outbox too otherwise they'll never see each other's messages unless they happen to be on the same relay. And unless it's a big public relay you have a very small anon set. Finding whose messaging on a private relay is easy (no you can't see what or who is messaging but you know the user base of your relay by their kind0s)
Do you see my point? I know the protocol pretty well. I'm not expert but there are better solutions to private messaging right now.
I was just answering your question for informational purposes, nothings perfect
