My money has once again been frozen by an exchange.
As always, I try to explain that I am a journalist and make my money through donations. I send them my donations page – and of course that's not enough.
"Please show us receipts of when you purchased the bitcoin," they say. Because the concept of using bitcoin as money simply does not exist in the mind of a compliance bro.
Its not illegal to receive anonymous donations – in theory. In practice, the bank will freeze your accounts until you KYC every donation you receive. This is the problem with AML:
You can obey the law as it is written, and the bank will still penalize you without any chance at due process.
All this, of course, while Jeffrey Epstein and friends move hundreds of millions through the banks for human trafficking.

May I ask why you still use exchanges? Has it something to do with the banks to which you wire the funds?
Is there something about your usecase that makes an exchange necessary?
Multiple exchanges, multiple bank accounts, p2p as much as possible... But that's indeed extremely annoying.

For what it's worth, I used to use Strike for zaps and never had an issue with them. I'd have hundreds of transactions in and out.
And you can convert in and out fiat if you want. It's an expected part of their business, which is why I figure I never had issues.

I don't know what your point is but I've always been able to adjust my limits according to my needs on Strike.
This is likely going to be an increasingly common narrative.
The F-A-T-F and other organizations, as you know, Lola, are waging a war on self-holstered wallets. So any donations from a self-hosted wallet, which isn't easily identifiable, will immediately bring up a red flag on their systems.
I don't have a solution for you, unfortunately. And I feel a huge amount of sympathy... Unfortunately, this isn't limited to one jurisdiction or country. It will be worldwide soon.
You still have to interact with the fiat system to buy airplane tickets, rent vehicles, or air B&Bs. Unfortunately, Bitcoin only rails just aren't as effective.
One avenue is to pick a jurisdiction and hole up and continue your advocacy online... That's my plan B and I picked El Salvador for that. If things start getting too difficult, I'm retreating.

Unfortunately wouldn't help, since the banks are still going to want to know where the money came from.
My point is that exchanges have thresholds 50, 100k before they become compliant for certain proof of funds, not to mention look onchain at history.

Have you tried to do a manual ricochette? ( sending the utxo 7 times before sending it to a exchange ) I heard that the exchange is checking for coinjoins only 7 steps back. Anybody has any knowledge about this?
Time to switch exchange... Or self custody.
