If they appear at the exact same spot in the sky from your position, you see an eclipse. If they are in front of you at any other position, you see them both. The nearer the Moon's apparent position to the Sun's, the smaller the crescent of reflected light you see, and the farther the apparent position, the larger the crescent. There's no reason you cannot see a light source and an object reflecting its light at the same time. You can prove this to yourself by holding a tennis ball in a dark room illuminated by a single light bulb, and moving it around to various positions. Keeping it orthogonal to your face at all times and using eye protection, measure the angle between the Sun and the Moon from the moment they both become visible and then again just before the first one sets. The angle will change only about six degrees throughout a twelve hour period, not enough to notice a change in phase with the naked eye.

Oh, and for even more fun, you can prove to yourself, using the same setup and taking a single measurement every day or so, that the angle between the Sun and the Moon takes four weeks to traverse 360°. Additionally, you can also easily observe and prove to yourself that the Earth is rotating by the process of elimination. 1) All the constellations are easily observed to move in 360-degree arcs across the sky every day. 2) By the laws of relative motion, we know that either the Earth is rotating, or all of these stars are rotating around us. 3) We know the distance to many of the stars in these constellations exceeds one light year. 4) If a star is one light year away from us or more, and it rotates around the Earth once per day, its speed must be at least 6.28 x 365 x the speed of light, which is not possible. 5) Therefore the Earth is rotating. He measured the shadow cast by a vertical object at two different locations (Syrene and Alexandria) and then used his observations and maths to calculate the circumference of the Earth. If you care you can look up the details. P and S waves, the waves created during an earthquake, can be used not only to show the Earth is round but they also help us to understand what the earth is made of. Again easy to look up and find explanations for if you care to. Your comment about using a spirit level to show that the Earth is flat is fundamentally and technically flawed. If you wanted to use a spirit level to show that the Earth was flat the level wouldn’t need to be over 200m long. Look up the Sagitta formula if you care to know why. The mistake you have made here is not taking into account the relative scales of the thing that you are trying to measure and the thing that you’re measuring with. You can use a similar method such as shining a laser beam over 500m or so to demonstrate the Earth either being flat or curved and the results are consistent with a global not a flat earth. Again using these observations and a little maths, you can calculate the curvature of the earth. You can use a sextant to measure the angle above the horizon of Polaris. In the northern hemisphere as you travelled further south Polaris gets lower in the sky. This observation is consistent with a globe Earth and, again, with some measurements and the little maths you can calculate the curvature of the Earth. I’ve giving you 4 examples of Observation + measurement + maths = proof in support of a globe earth and explained why using a 30 cm spirit level does not work to show that the Earth is flat. Please help this max retard understand the error of his ways by giving me comparable proofs that the Earth is flat.

That is; what is the incentive for all governments to have lied about this for the last 4000 years. This is not a question about science since lying about something cannot be tested with the scientific method. Of course this question you will think is invalid if you are sticking to your guns that the earth being flat was the consensus before the 1970s. Any interest in engaging on that question yet? Or maybe if you can show me some credible evidence for flat earth being taught as consensus before the 1970s. Of course it would have to be compelling since I know people personally who went to a school before the 70s and were not taught that.

i did answer your question a while back, perhaps you missed it. Knowledge gives asymmetric power. you also mis-understood me. people accepted the globe as a truth as a majority aftet 1972 and the blue marble. before that it was accepted only as an idea. good luck with your experiments
