Andreas Aantonopolous … discussing entropy and hardware wallets..including a discussion of @Coinkite ‘s pioneering retirement attack PROTECTION feature: verifiable dice roll entropy inclusion! Documentation here:
@N et al wisely created a feature that protected the opt-in user from a bug that was exploited some 5 years later…
Just think of how smart y’all would think these guys were if it were any other hardware wallet vendor whose wallet lacked sufficient entropy.
I would like to see more hardware wallet vendors protect their users against their own products by choosing to implement user generated entropy inclusion in a provable fashion like coinkite did.
Bad entropy will rear its head again somewhere…it will take more than one round of these beatings until the market learns.
So let me ask: what protection do you have from your hardware wallet? I’m betting the best you can do is a passphrase, so don’t forget it! Lose that passphrase and your seedphrase isn’t very helpful!

The coldcard fiasco has a very very important and probably not good side effect: bitcoin is not fungible. When stolen cold card coins move into circulation, the first identifiable holder of said stolen coin will be sued in real life to return the coin…this could have massively disruptive effects on bitcoin as money.
