It's frustrating to see obviously authentic new users getting no followers or engagement, while established, influential accounts give credence to scammy shit like this. It's not hard to look at an account before you follow it SMH.
I literally unfollowed him this morning. I had followed when I first got here and then unfilled and apparently he snuck back in under my radar. He's now muted.

my most charitable reading is that the account in question is not a native English speaker, probably over-uses LLMs and emojis, and might have engaged in some questionable practices in the past but is not a "scammer".
That's why I have tried to help this user in the past. I've mentioned to them numerous times why zap4follow is bad for Nostr, and advised them on ways to grow their account more naturally.

I want to report to all our users that I was treated like fish in the face and censored for no reason by a user here who ordered his 100 dogs to remove my follow because he says people scam! I didn't know that doing zap4follow was scamming people! I lost 100 followers in a few minutes without deserving it. Go see my profile. I publish things from my life. Photo of my daughter. The places I visit. I post every 10 minutes about every kind of topic. And for a zap4follow I deserve that a character who should work for the facebook censors deserves to lose what I built in a month here on this social network? Where is the freedom? Isn't it a free and decentralized social network? What happened to me this? Please visit my profile and you will see the effort I put into it. The censor in question is @Ryan and 35 others

I called out corndalorian for crying for zaps a while back. He got triggered and muted me. Some people agreed with me and others thought I was being an asshole. Zap for follow is just as cringe as crying for zaps on memes imo. But there isn’t anything malicious with either. One is making memes for sats and the other is offering sats for follows. If he’s going to pay sats for follows then I guess that’s fine. It’s like paying for ads to get people to follow your instagram. It’s not great quality follows but it’s not malicious. And I think using LLMs to communicate is inauthentic. It’s low quality content but is it scammy? I wouldn’t say that but I would agree that Ryan’s advice to not use those tactics is solid. Eventually people would’ve unfollowed if it really bothered them. There was an npub I had to unfollow recently because all the posts were just asking for sats to feed their kids. I don’t think that’s scammy but it’s just annoying.

I'm in 💯 agreement on that. A follow means nothing, just that a button has been clicked one time. Hopefully we see more of a move toward multiple lists, and using something else for trust. I wish I had a "trusted users" list, that I could add people I have met IRL, and users whom I've had extensive interactions with to. Follows don't really mean much.
Most follows aren't even the result of clicking the "follow" button, people just get onboarded with them.

Augment may be a better word than supplant. The more data sources we have, the better.
That's why there's a subset of npubs with a sky-high and steadily-increasing number of followers, that hardly ever post anything.

We first just did badges, but that's really easy to game and some people troll others with rude badges or wait until people add badges to their profile and then turn the images into porn. Very funny.
Then we thought a handshake method would be good, so that someone can give someone else part of their WoT, if they know them IRL.
And there are also ways to gamify the handshake at meetups, by using techniques that requiring seeing the same thing or connecting over Bluetooth, or whatnot.

Anyone can add a "bot:true" tag to their profile, as well. I also build bots, for release notes and testing and stuff, but they're going to be labeled and our clients will display that label in the npub profiles.

This is to avoid confusion. It's not a label applied to others. The creator of a bot can label it as such themselves for clarity, so people know what they are interacting with.

I created this original thread to warn people of possible scammy behavior. I feel it was justified, and the user it was about has already committed to changing that behavior, and we have had real conversations. I think it's a win overall 🤙

It wasn't a list of people who I thought were bots Rand 😅 it was a list of people I follow who I was worried had been taken advantage of by a scammer, and I was letting them know, for their own good. I think you misunderstand the intentions of my note.
I felt boniz23 was using strange tactics, and made this note to warn others. I wasn't saying everyone in the list was a bot 😂 In the time since boniz23 has agreed to stop said tactics, so I consider it a closed thread. All is well Rand, I wouldn't worry about it.
