Whenever we go to the local Italian restaurant, the waitress asks if we want dessert or coffee afterward. I know it's a common thing, but for the life of me I don't know why anyone would want coffee after a big meal at night.

Nations can build certain habits which only makes sense if you have grown up with it
nice vasoconstriction, like a cigarette after a meal. it counters the felt effects of blood going to the gut to help with digestion.

First (on the business side) it’s to try and get your check average up. Second if you don’t drink alcohol it’s nice to have something other than a sugary drink or water.

Maybe it’s because after eating too much they just want to poop 😁
Haha, that's a very Italian thing. A shot of coffee goes well with Amaretto.
I drink coffee (latte), if that counts, into the early hours…

Coffee in the evening? If I may quote a famous Bitcoiner... 😃 image
I second the people who say that espresso after dinner is a must!
Its the restaurant that is the context though. Its part of the dining out experience, but as normal day to day routine, drinking coffee after dinner is not a thing for most.

But in Italy after 10 in the morning it’s usually an espresso only- can also have afagato ice cream
Im getting a big Italian meal tonight then have to drive an hour to the in laws. Belly full of pasta on the road makes me sleepy, espresso to counteract!

second above comments but it also just goes well with many / most deserts
I'm italian, I prefer not drink coffee after 18. (unless I have to drive) But it's super common here to always drink an espresso after each big meal.

I can only speak for myself, but as carnivore im happy to have a nice cup of coffee after a meal. The last thing I do enjoy "plant based". When I do have to work the next day though, I sometimes think twice, but overall its just common practice, at least in my family.

Yeah. Have been to Fano this Year. Beautiful City. And its true, espresso is common EVERYWHERE. And it also does not matter where you order one. Restaurant or Autostrada stop.... Its pretty much always a perfect espresso. Freakin love Italy man!
Oh wait til you get to Colombia, eat and get really full for someone to ask you if you would like some boiling hot coffee, at about 42 degrees Celsius... Doesn't make sense to me. Or people craving soup when climate is hot AF

Reminds me of my friend Dim @npub1vr2n...dzvx he lives his coffee after a god carnivore meal. And honestly it's not a bad combo... But some people don't seem to be affected by it or are just night owl folks.
