Makes sense for Damus purple guys, tho.
Does Notedeck use the same relay?
barely any active subs
π
Ouch.
notedeck uses whatever is on your relay list
It is a really huge relay. πΈ
All the best projects run at a loss! But not forever.
If you donβt make sats from it, then you have no responsibility to keep it online.
The cost of operating the big relays is really a pain point for nostr
Notedeck is looking good , I am running it on my Linux laptop.
yeah its the fastest nostr client noone uses π
i dont mind at least i have a fast client for myself and a few frens
I can't do so man columsn. Triggers me. π
you can do 1 column
what specs and price?
Ah, really? I haven't used it in a while.
I'm supposed to still be all mad at you, tho. Keep forgetting to stay mad.

Life is too short to be mad at anyone imo.
My Damus frens are all hoping you really spiffy it up for them. Wisp has been underwhelming and they don't want to use Primal. Ya gotta throw them a bone, kwim?
I am missing the stay mad genes. I can't tell if it's a feature or a bug. π
@utxo the webmaster π§βπ» member wen we asked for this?
this could be it. the great awakening for outboxen haha.
love you @jb55 but freelays subsidized by the brokensats cabal are broken economics.
and yes, i realize the irony of utxo has a borkensats grant now, but still, it's not all black or white here, but ples, use your brokensats and pretend like economics exist for when they expire
Free relays make sense and big relays make sense, but big, free relays don't make no friggin sense.
This be the thing.
How much per month?
Almost everyone has had a grant. Sort of irrelevant.
all my servers are about $500 per month (relay, purple api)
Yeah, thats a lot to do altruisticly :(
But not bad for such a popular relay.
nostr only has 5 users, so it's pretty bad
Grant irrelevant, all my relays up without grants, I can spare the $15/mo
easy when you have only 2 users
My relays are sorta shit, but dirt cheap. I rent better stuff.
This is where Amethyst and @Vitor Pamplona come in.
That's Android.
Even I got a $20 grant for an installment of a short story once. Am I a professional?
Thought we were talking about all clients. Whoops.
But u member right? Or am I hallucinating again π the great outboxing?
Yes I memba just very busy sir sorry sir
We down bad π
it's the bear market, we'll be back to 10 next cycle
All we need is to slurp the content from bigtech. Stop spending on relays start porting data ffs
Just checking
You should try the pay model before shutting it down, or ask for donations every month, or both.
Maybe keep the events for 24hours. Should teach users a lesson, they still get onboarding and saves you on cost.
Curious, could the relay run within these resource limits?
Shape: VM.Standard.A1.Flex
OCPU count: 4
Network bandwidth (Gbps): 4
Memory (GB): 24
Local disk: Block storage only (200GB)
If so, OCI free-forever option will cost you $0 per month to host.
Keep it on for those who are active?
what the, how is that possible. 4 cpus is pushing it though
Charge people to use it if they want to keep events longer than 24 hrs. You can find a way to keep it running
OCI has a free-forever offering. I've been using since 2022 to host a BTCPAY server instance. Check into it. I've yet to pay any hosting fees.
It would be good to rug it, to see what fails.
Thank you for your service o7
why don't you run it at home? not enough bandwidth?
I want to help you but I don't see the point of donating because there is many free relays.
Make purple users sponsors of their personal follows. Make your relay accessible for purple, their follows and their follows. Only direct follows can write.
500/month is nothing. You only need 100 to pay 5 to break even.
You don't know how averse Nostriches are to paying even 21 sats/month for any service. π€£
pretty much
I'm paying for relays and love how Amethyst reminds me to do so. If my follows would be made aware that they are being sponsored by me, wouldn't that incentivize more people to sponsor their folliws? I bet it would.
I have 3 columns setup currently, me, notifications and universe.
universe is so janky⦠i need to make it not realtime
I would like an update button on each column if that is possible or if that is already there please point me to it, thanks.
All columns are realtime (except one post per pubkey algo feed), if its not updating its a bug
It is updating but it is slower than Damus.
I note notedeck updates quicker if I turn off my vpn.
makes sense
sell it

Damus works without our relay :/
why not try to sell it? iβm sure thereβs a buyer out there
why would anyone want to buy it
most users don't think about which relay is eating their events. the protocol is open by design. from an investment angle, the data walks in the door on its own.
The open protocol is the point, you can simply download all events from the Damus relay (over time due to rate limits)β¦ Will is right that nobody would buy it, itβs already free data by design.
events are free. sensitive data is at the connection layer.
And there lies the real treasure. Naked IPs of people not using a VPN or Tor.
welcome to the internet

I was tempted to ask you about hosting it as I would love to validate my idea about "sponsoring your follows" but I don't have the capacity to develop such a product right now. But there should be many angles by which a relay could be profitable. Think status, not features.
Right now, those running free relays are the heroes but sponsoring them doesn't give me status. They get the status and I can mostly silently give them a thank-you zap but that's it.
You could also give each paying customer a limited list of others they want to sponsor, with a promise to reward those who get multiple sponsorships with ways to give those on.
Make it relevant to users and people will want it.
Make the purple user publicly inform his sponsored accounts to get advertisement.
i was hoping he wouldn't ask me to say the quiet part out loud
I hate to think youβre forced to recognize the reality of this because it means it is underfunded by usersβ¦ I love it here, but has to be expensive long-term.

Is it mostly bandwidth cost? Or storage too? If mostly storage it would be interesting to see what happens if you make it an ephemeral relay instead
I can give you a vm on lnvps for free if you want
What do you need the relay for anyway? I only use public relays for my builds, besides yours because the ratelimiting makes it unreliable for my usecase
