For most of human history, we did not have a standard global unit for length. The pharaoh or king got to set the unit and often changed it. Through dozens of local and constantly changing measures of distance, trade was difficult. Only in 1875 did someone define the metre as 1/10,000,000 the circumference of the world. It took decades for the unit to be adopted. And only in 1983 was the unit changed to be defined by the speed of light.
We also had no good measurement of time. Only in 1884 did England start using the same time everywhere. Before that, every town had its own time as they’d set clocks to 12 when the sun was directly overhead, which is different by many minutes from one side of the country to the other. We could only unify clocks after the invention of the telegraph, which let Greenwich beam out that it was now 12 o’clock in Greenwich every day!
So those discoveries were made +98% of the way from when written language was created until current day. Practically yesterday, and yet their discovery took us to the moon, allowed the internet to be created etc etc. The emphasis is that it’s the adoption of a global, unchanging, fundamental unit of measurement which was so sorely needed.
So, bitcoin is a global, unchanging unit denominating a percentage of society’s energy reserves. Establishing a standard unified cost for anyone and everyone wanting to access our combined energy reserves.
The adoption of this standard unit is also taking a couple of decades. The difference in this case is that if you realise it early, you can claim a sizeable chunk of society’s energy reserves. But just like creating a standard unchanging unit of distance led to so many crazy inventions and so much more food on everyone’s plates, so will the adoption of a constant, global cost of energy-access adopted worldwide.
#[0] would adoption of PTLCs on the lightning network allow more than 480ish pending payments per channel?
