I think he probably believes it. But I also think he is quite delusional and not living in our universe.
He may be right, but it will be extremely painful getting to that point. My greatest fear is the things humans will do in response to that pain. I suspect that's what will actually make him wrong. Capitalism in theory SHOULD be making life better and cheaper over time. The problem is that we live in a distorted and perverted reality that is robbing us all of those gains. We won't get to enjoy the benefits equally just as we don't get to now. It's all unnatural right now. If it had been free markets, we all would have naturally progressed together toward his vision. Instead, it's a two tiered system and the divide is growing.

I think that Elon is full of shit. I have come to the conclusion that his most important skill is related to controlling the narrative. Somehow, Elon has managed to make people, who don’t have enough money to buy proper food or to have children, to accept their faith and dream about multiplanetary future.
Elon keeps the show going so that people don’t pay attention to what is causing the misery and pain. And at the same time Elon is creating dystopian surveillance tech so that the ‘one world, one government’ overlords can suppress all the dissidents in the future.

The “AI” race is mostly just about securing compute for the US. It’s a chip war. Generative AI is a parlor trick to get the most hash rate possible on US soil. That compute is then used to mine bitcoin or secure another proof of work digital currency.
