I'm not here on Nostr because I run away from Twitter. I'm here because I'm in search for an internet as it once used to be.
I'm a hacker who fucking hates that social media is in the hands of private companies. I remember using IRC and meeting likeminded anons online. I remember what the internet utopia felt like. People who didn't care what your name or status is, people who aren't interested in sharing their boring holiday pics with random strangers online. I'm not interested in what politicians and influencers have to say. I don't care about the latest mainstream trend that's going viral.
I want random weird interesting smart people around me who share their ideas in a free and open space that isn't controlled by anyone.
That's all I'm looking for. There aren't many such spaces on the internet.

My 7 year old daughter wants to be a hacker. We watched the new spy kids movie called Armageddon code on Netflix. Totally worth it watching as a 30 year adult woman who loved absolutely LOVED the original spy kids films. I remember them on my VCR with tapes and we got a pair of 3D glasses with the purchase of the VHS tape but my brother and I fought over who got to wear them the first time watching the movie. 🎥 😂🤙 those were simpler times
The world needs more hackers like her!
Agreed 100%! Make the internet cypherpunk again!
well said
Run away from X
This is the New England pub of the 1760’s and 70’s. The punk club of the 1970’s. The beefsteak of the mid 1800’s. Glad to see we still have a small corner.
🫂
p.s. @jb55 just recreated a way to IRC on nostr - i.e. shitpoast without signatures 😀
we're here for you fren
free to stay, free to speak
hey calle 🫂
I didn’t realize it until you articulated it, but same. That’s definitely why I’m here on nostr.
Iono man, downloading mp3s at 10Kb/s off of irc !triggers isn't something I want to go back to 🙃
Add to this reason the feeling of freedom that it brings. Not to be on the record forever waiting to be fired for something you said 10 years ago.
Same here... IRC and Newsgroups and No Search Engine... Good'ol days!
I feel exactly the same... Back in the day you could bond REALLY WELL with people that you didn't had a single clue about their name, country of origin, city they lived... ANYTHING.
It's weird to look back and see that this is not the case anymore... It was really fun to meet random strangers with the same interests and create friendships along the way.
I would say that I miss even the trolls... That's how bad current internet has become! =/

I’m here strictly for the fun
I’m here for information. I use the others for fun and distraction.
Absolutely. Let others come when they are ready for digital freedom.
The Internet was much better in the 90’s. Nostr feels the same, but cooler.
Let’s do it
Well said. I watched the internet go from a new unexpored place to completely captured in less than 30 years. I am now only interested in non big tech solutions.
Anyone that is still using Windows unless at the point of a gun is acting the fool. (I pretty much consider working for corp's to be forced labor)
Anyone bindly clicking though 'accept' buttons to use phone apps has lost their mind. (mine is nothing but a 2 factor necessity)
Anyone using their doctor's office app is sharing all their medical information explicitly with permission.
Anyone... the list goes on... and on...
Of course, I'm the odd one becuase I never used twitter, I saw this comming a long time ago.
Let’s fucking go!!
Thanks.
Merci.
Gracias.
Danke.

We are Nostr 🤙
Loved mIRC ... 😢
*random weird interesting smart people 👏🏽🙏🏽💜
IRC 😎
Yes this is it.
Anal penetration tester.
🍻 "share their ideas in a free and open space that isn't controlled by anyone." ... Priceless! 🧡
FREEDOM TECH IS HOPE🕊️
IRC and forums are still very much up and running. Plus, there's petabytes of free porn.
IRC still exists, some just left it...
Actually most comms based on protocols are still there, some diminished, some not so much.
It's moved on since then, still uses triggers but the file servers are generally XDCC now & alot faster, pretty good actually.
And you can search easier.
#NOSTR has to be protected by all means!!

Cheers to that 🍻

MY SENTIMENTS EXACTLY!!!!! Thank you Calle. You sir have hit the nail on the head.
If Nostr fails, then I'll go back to a copper line and learning how to make my own BBS.
COMMUNITY IS KING!!!
Following. I’m a random weird person haha
absolutely. reddit used to be like that. google killed Usenet.

Nice statement!! Sats flying out
I'd say, I want a community that is working together to resource ourselves and bring our collective genius to collaborate and cocreate, hacking this mainstream matrix reality and spearheading the #RegenerativeRenaissance planting the seeds of regenerative culture to #rebirthearth preserving, protecting, securing the #sourcecode of #theseedoflife

Kind of like old Reddit.
Nostr does have the potential to be that, really, but there is still work to do, especially in terms of interface and, most importantly, diversity in the community.
With u
Diversity? In what sense?
🫂🧡
💯
👏👏
Lets go
No need to create a BBS, plenty of them still exist and are active.
I couldn't agree more with your sentiments about the current state of the internet. It's disheartening to see how social media platforms have become dominated by private companies, controlling the flow of information and limiting our online experiences. I miss the days when the internet was a free and open space, where we could connect with like-minded individuals without the interference of regulations and algorithms.
As someone residing in Africa, I understand firsthand the challenges of accessing certain services and the difficulty of connecting outside our network. It's frustrating to see how we are often left behind, unable to fully benefit from the advancements and opportunities that the internet can offer.
I, too, yearn for the days of IRC and the internet utopia it represented. The joy of meeting anonymous individuals who shared their unique perspectives and ideas, without judgment or preconceived notions, is a feeling that is hard to replicate. The online world used to be a place where our names and statuses didn't matter, where we could freely express ourselves without fear of being drowned out by the noise of mainstream trends.
What I long for is a community of random, weird, interesting, and smart people who can come together in a space that is truly free and open, one that isn't controlled by anyone. A space where we can engage in meaningful discussions, exchange ideas, and challenge each other's thinking without the influence of politics or the mindless chatter of influencers.
Sadly, such spaces are becoming increasingly rare, but it is conversations like these that remind us of the importance of preserving and nurturing the essence of the internet as it once was. Together, we can strive for a digital environment that promotes diversity, inclusivity, and the freedom to express ourselves without fear of censorship or control.
Stay hopeful, my friend. And let us continue to seek out those pockets of the internet where genuine connection and intellectual exploration are still valued.

You're a script kiddie. Internet was always like this.
..and also is almost everyone here. We are happy to be Home.
Dunno, web2.0 really cemented home the absolute bullshit we live in now. Internet may have always been like this but niche communities still existed. Now we just have... yeah.
But there was a time when the regulations were not this severe.
Copper phone line or Telnet ones?
With Nostr, we have the opportunity to explore a decentralized social media protocol that offers a chance of working, without relying on traditional peer-to-peer models.
#Nostr #DecentralizedProtocol #InternetPromise #InternetRevival
The only one that matters, of course: diversity of content.
Old Reddit wasn't entirely (or even mostly) about Bitcoin, or even money in general, was it?
Nut 🌰 coming your way
Amen, brother.

Love it

This made me cry 😢
🧡💯
A relative issue I see is that the best Nostr clients mimic the twitter structure, which focuses on names rather than subjects, and we are missing names compared to twitter, at least in any subject other than bitcoin.
Something like stacker news is interesting, I miss clients that put more focus on subjects rather than names.
Both.

I love this.
The utopia never went away, it just seems a bit delayed to come back more powerful. We won!

An open town square for anyone to meet at anytime
It’s actually the fusion of left leaning people, for the idea of a publicly owned property, but also the right leaning, who believe in freedom of speech etc
Nostr is a special place
❤️
Started getting back here on Nostr because the posts can be as long as you want and you don't need to get blue checks...plus it's gotten much better.
So ditto

I still use IRC
A million times yes
I think you are onto something: When posts and follows are organized by author, authors are incentivized to use eye-grabbing rhetoric, to provoke adrenaline and make people want more, and to get more: More likes! More followers!
When posts are organized by topic, contributors can speak freely, but there is less incentive for authors to seek followers through rhetoric, and more incentive to gain community respect by providing useful perspective.
Not that the latter can’t happen on author-organized services, but the incentives seem to distract from it. The author-focused services feel noisier and frenetic or schizophrenic, while the subject-focused services feel more focused and useful.
Exactly
Second zap ever! Thank you @Galetaire. See my dopamine flow? Just like likes on twitter. Though I think the fact that zaps are money does change the incentive structure on Nostr. I suspect it pushes authors toward utility and other value (like humor) over pure adrenaline goosing attention grabs.
Well said👊
Same
I'm building on Nostr because no one can take it away from me, the government nor "moderators" can ban me, I can say what I want without being treated like a child by a centralized platform, and Bitcoin is the native money.
Nostr is a tool of God to enhance human freedom.
