image I had a dream about the violin, which reminded me of a piece called the Devil's Trill by the composer Giuseppe Tartini in 1700s who said the work came to him in a dream. So I guess my dream opted me to share the devil's music 😈 I stiched all four movements together originally released as Columbia 33CX 1415, features David Oistrakh on the violin remastered in 2024

some taiwanese still follow folk religions with traditions with historical record going back to the 16th-17th century. (for comparison, the Catholics in Taiwan didnt get to stick around until the 1850s, Matsu worship is probably the closest) In donggang district they have a cool exhibit called the King Boat museum. image The king boat refers to 王爺 which is a deity that wards off disease that is also celebrated in Mingnan provinces of mainland china and throughout southeast asia too (vietnam, Philippines, indonesia, etc). Oftentimes when people talk about Taiwan's "ancient" historical ties to China it's referring to these sorts of traditions which is only a subset of what has been followed around the island across history and certainly unrecognizable to People's Republic of China of modern times in taiwan, every 3 years they construct beautiful ships as a tribute to the deities only to burn them when completed. Set a giant wooden ship on fire every 3 years as a measure to suppress epidemics 🤭

today went gravesweeping for my great grandmother (1887) which ive never met. During gravesweeping season there are many to go to, but i look forward to this one in particular because the view is great. its an old site overlooking Tamsui River toward the sea that sometimes hard to find because of overgrowth, and alongside 4 decades of wear, has destroyed most of the paths to it. However a unique pair of angels help mark it. There are angels instead of the traditional guardian lions because she became a Christian late in her life. the view has changed a lot and the path up here has gotten harder, but the great weather today make it worth it image

The 2026 Pingtung Bluefin Tuna Cultural Festival starts April 21st! Planning to visit for the first time next month to see how the tuna auction works. On April 8, the season's "First Tuna" was auctioned at the Donggang Fish Market, fetching a record-breaking price of NT$10,600 per kilogram (190kg). Definitely inflation in TWD, haha. (0.89BTC) I started to monitor the pingdong fishermen association for their press releases for fun to get some sense on where food comes from. According to the article, Captain Hung on his 53rd season shared that he wasn't even looking for bluefin! His crew was originally targeting sailfish in the waters southwest of Taiwan when the giant tuna took the bait. After a 30-minute battle to secure the catch, Hung rushed back to port, exhilarated and "unable to sleep" from the excitement. it's great to see how hardworking fishermen are celebrated by the association, more genuine than TV media coverage The winner of the first Tuna auction went to a local renowned seafood restaurant (佳珍海產餐廳 since '94) who pledged their proceeds of the first tuna of the season to underprivileged children and youth -- what a class act. the restaurant has won the first tuna auction for years, apparently the owner was a tuna fisherman that transitioned to being a restauranteur after a near-death experience at sea. Plan to visit the restaurant this season for Taiwanese Tuna Cuisine 🤤 press release: https://www.tkfisher.org.tw/Comm_NewsPage?sid=F4C7A091E0F054CD82718B9947A82C9E&enid=AC0D16E6A82B6F1EBEAE1166868912C9 restaurant:

today i opened X and saw a post describing that oysters are a sewage filter which i thought was a funny way to describe them, but then it followed with many replies of people declaring they'll never eat an oyster who doesnt like oysters 🤨? surely they're trolling, right? taiwanese cuisine has oyster omelettes (egg, sweet potato + tapioca starch, and oysters), so delicious

it's that time of year again. lantern festival is the 15th day of Spring Festival/Lunar New Year to celebrate the end of festivities another lantern festival tradition we have in taiwan is the "bombing of han dan" in taitung rather than shooting fireworks at the public like in yansui/tainan, this one parades a brave volunteer that is stripped naked into a bunch of fireworks. goggles and a towel for safety 😰 taiwanese people are weird, enjoy some tang yuans 🥳 View quoted note →
