So I'm having serious doubts about getting GTA6 now. Like what the fuck am I even thinking? I'm going to give my drivers license to SONY to look after???
1. July 2008 — PlayStation.com site hit with SQL injection, redirected visitors to a fake antivirus download. Minor, no confirmed data theft.
2. April 2011 — The big one. PSN and Qriocity hacked via external intrusion; personal data of ~77 million accounts stolen (names, addresses, birthdates, passwords, possibly partial card data). Network down 23 days. Cost Sony an estimated $171 million, triggered congressional hearings and class-action lawsuits.
3. May 2011 — Sony Online Entertainment (separate from PSN) breach exposed ~25 million customer accounts' personal data, discovered in the aftermath of the April hack.
4. June 2011 — Sony Pictures websites hacked by LulzSec via SQL injection; over 1 million accounts exposed plus music codes and coupons.
5. 2013–2014 holiday seasons — PSN repeatedly knocked offline by DDoS attacks (Lizard Squad), including a big one on Christmas Day 2014 affecting up to 160 million users. No data stolen, just service disruption; the perpetrator was later sentenced to 27 months in prison.
6. November 2014 — Sony Pictures hack. North Korean state-linked "Guardians of Peace" stole ~100 terabytes of data — unreleased films, employee PII, salaries, internal emails — and wiped systems. Tied to the film The Interview. Cost roughly $35M in IT repairs plus $8M in an employee lawsuit settlement. The US later indicted North Korean operatives.
7. August 2017 — Hacker group "OurMine" hijacked Sony/PlayStation social media accounts and claimed (disputed) to have accessed PSN's database. Sony regained the accounts quickly; scope of any real data access is unconfirmed.
8. May–June 2023 — MOVEit file-transfer breach (Cl0p ransomware group exploiting a third-party vulnerability, not a PSN-specific hack) exposed data on ~6,800 current/former Sony employees (names, SSNs). Sony disclosed it in October 2023.
9. September 2023 — A group calling itself "RansomedVC" claimed to have stolen 260GB (later described elsewhere as ~3.14GB) of internal Sony data and leaked sample files. Sony confirmed it was investigating; no evidence customer data was involved. A rival hacker publicly called the group's claims a scam.
So this is out now... all I'm asking is... who wants to go home... or who wants to come with me?!?
