Am I the only one in the world that doesn’t love the movie Akira? With its violence and gore and dark psychological aspects, it helped pave the way for mainstream adult animation. And it had amazing visuals for the time, with iconic aspects that were replicated elsewhere. So like, it’s objectively important in the history of the medium. No doubt about that. But in terms of watching it, I don’t find it subjectively engaging, nor do I find myself recommending it like “you gotta watch Akira”. image

It was great! But I agree on the fact that I can’t love it either!

I haven’t seen it, because it didn’t look interesting to me. I guess that doesn’t count.

I tried several times... always felt asleep will try again and will tell you that I've actually liked it, becaude I slept over Ghost in the shell actually
Kind of like a tv series that stays faithful to the Wheel Of Time novels. I can understand needing to cut some characters and plots since otherwise it would be a generation in the watching, but the Amazon Prime adaptation was so pitiful and off track in so many ways, especially illogical ones that rekt the overall plot!
Totally with you on this. I was desperate to watch it as it immediately gained a good reputation. But when I finally got the video, sat down and watched I was bored by it. Can remember my disappointment to this day!

I second the Death Note. Also Parasyte. I'm going to protest until we get Lyn speaking at Fanime-Con in San Jose 😂

Team Dragon Ball
The original English dub from 1988 was absolutely atrocious -- the 2001 dub was much better. Best still is original Japanese track with the subtitles. The SOUNDTRACK by Geinoh Yamashirogumi though -- absolutely hypnotic and immersive 👀

It’s fantastic. I would also recommend you watch the behind the scenes once you finish it. Truly a work of art
It would be historical only for people working in the animation industry, because I think its influence mainly focuses on techniques of expression and world setting as you mention.

I found it the least appealing of the ones in that similar sorta early anime pantheon
and of course, lots of people don’t like violence and gore. I can’t believe I watched the entirety of Breaking Bad when it first came out. Luckily, I don’t remember any of it. 😅
It was wild and mind blowing at the time i watched it. But I do agree it’s over recommended and not the magic from story and character as it would seem y how it’s suggested.

If you want to watch a real masterpiece about friendship and entropy, I recommend the TV version of Puella Magi Madoka Maciga
Never heard of it. Now I’m torn over wondering if I can safely ignore it.

Akira didn’t have a character with which many people would identify. Impotent rage is a hard sell to movie goers. The bike is more personable than bomb boy.
It was a technically great movie. OK story. Lot of constraints. Lot of problems too. Like books to movies, the manga's got more details. Its not one of the first adult animated movies though. Just one with that level of detail.
I got flak for saying “graphic novels” were called “cartoons” when I was growing up. … just saying
Beer So many of my friends have tried to get me to like beer with all sorts of fancy stuff that they like. To me it always just tastes of Beer. Which I don't like.
Try reading the books. I think it goes way more into some of the deeper issues of nuclear power and develops the breakdown of the friendship between Tetsuo and Kaneda that the movie doesn’t do justice to
I read the manga, never watched the anime. It was okay. It's never in my anime recommandations.

Dark Side of the Moon is deep... and there's a reason it's the fourth best selling album in history... Time... And then one day you find ten years have got behind you No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking Racing around to come up behind you again The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older Shorter of breath and one day closer to death #iykyk
