ahh that’s actually different than when I started, and now I have an account paid in sats with npub and remote signer (so no personal data collected). all you need to do is load video onto internet anywhere and link it in your client
Posting media on the Internet costs money. Someone has to pay for it. You either pay with your personal information and tracking, your data, which is what TikTok and Facebook and Twitter do or you pay for the storage space for someone else to host the images or you host them yourself on a server you own. Nostr allows you to do all of this so that you are not the product. It's a bit different than what most are used to doing.
I read the book back in the day, and a Reddit user mentioned that everyone here is pro-freedom, so that’s why I decided to go with this. But I’m not a technical person, and I’m definitely not going to pay anyone to store my videos.
No, there isn't one Nostr company. Nostr is a decentralized protocol, meaning no one central company controls all of Nostr. There are all sorts of different people that run relays. Some are free, some are paid.
The basic premise is that like most social media you probably won't be able to upload 1 GB files. This is true of Twitter, tik tok, Instagram, discord and even some file-sharing platforms. To upload big files like movie length videos you probably will have to pay for that privilege like you do on discord, and twitter but if you're only doing 30 second long videos you will probably be OK unless it's 4K or something. Nostr is simple, you NSEC/Key is your password, your Npub is your handle but you can use NIP-05 services like these to get easier handles. https://orangepill.dev/nip-05/ If you have a website you can make a custom one.
I was making a few thousand dollars there, so I’m not sure how I can earn the same amount here, who’s supposed to pay, and why I would need to pay to someone for my content
I don’t think you understand. You are not paying someone for your content, you are paying for your content to be hosted. The only reason hosting was free, was because your data was being harvested on TikTok, so you were paying indirectly. Here you are sovereign and free and being self responsible means paying for the services you use. The way you get paid here is by providing quality content that other people voluntarily ‘zap’, meaning they will send you satoshi’s, which are small units of bitcoin. That said, it will probably be a long time before you will make anything close to thousands of dollars here. For now this is a freedom of speech and communication project, among other things, but it is not yet big enough to support content creators to the degree you are used to.
This is true. I’m posting my podcast episodes on primal… you get 10 GB of storage with premium. But yeah if your name on Nostr is sovereign individual, you might wanna look into hosting your own data. Start 9 fomo is real,,, but I’m still trying to stack my balls off atm Eventually start 9 💯
I would give it the benefit of the doubt and try it out. I think you'll create more high quality connections here. Try the value for value model. See Also try out Where you can also receive satoshis for your content or just comments with a value4value model.
I see you haven't added a lightning address. Adding that will also give you a different experience. Do you know how to set it up?
#3 for sure, but I don't think this network protocol is it. Something like ION for fully decentralized identity and then self hosted Peergos for social graph and media would work. The p2p network should self-organize, having these proxy servers as a necessity is a huge weak point. Still going to try using this for a while, see how it goes.
This. It's an inconvenient truth. As with everything in life you need to build the skills to adapt to new situations. Most people fell they are "not technical" but can still use an iPhone, email, a webbrowser, EBay, Facbook, etc. Sadly in order for people to feel the need for change they need to either get hurt or through curiosity dive deep and start to understand. It's a slow process, but I believe the NGU of bitcoin slightly reflects this general global pbenomenon of people waking up. Bitcoin is the first step, then the rest comes slowly. This is at leas what I see in myselfe and hope is happening.
Relays work sort of like a subreddit. You can share a link to your videos on any free Nostr relay, but you will need to host your videos on another service. If you are already uploading to another provider, like YouTube, you can share those links for free. Relays don't store content like videos. We are transmitting JSON to share videos from anywhere else online. So, your videos will be to be hosted "somewhere" which can be anywhere.
your eyeballs are the product being sold to the advertisers in that case--option no. 1.
I hear what the guys are saying but I don't pay anything, there are tradeoffs with that obviously as they mentioned. You can use Nostr completely free if you want or you can be as technical as you want. Nostr is free to anyone. Derek is coming off a bit like, you must do this or.... fuck that, do as you please GM🫂

when I first started learning about bitcoin I was convinced everyone would want to run their own node. after learning lighting I'm convinced everyone is fine with having a hosted wallet. too much friction for the average
Not so sovereign then. Freedom comes with that responsibility. The choice is yours ... as Gigi replied. Over time you will like it once you dig into it, because freedom clears you up from within.
Think of it this way: When TikTok removes one of your videos or bans you completely, it’s not “censorship”. They are a marketplace and you are the product. They are just choosing which products they want to sell (ie to advertisers). If they don’t like a product (ie you) they don’t have to sell it. So, the choice really is: 1) Create only the content that will appease the marketplace owner, not what you really want to create, nor what your followers want/need to hear. 2) Create and publish content on a truly censorship-resistant, and open marketplace, directly to your followers. You see, it’s not really TikTok that’s censoring you. You are choosing to censor yourself. You don’t have to do that anymore.
I'm in favor of 2, I'm not quite ready for 3, but will get there one day. Question now is, which relays to support and who to pay?
Upload video on some server allowing public access. Put the link to nostr, ez.
Is there a Tiktok-like Nostr client app that can be recommended to American Tiktok users? I know in #Amethyst there is a tab fos short-videos. But, does anbody know if any part of Americans are moving to nostr? #asknostr
