If you are using today's version of @Amethyst go to the Around Me feed and say hello to your neighbors (+/- 5km, 3 mi). We are going to be using local feeds to onboard new users in the future. image

I don't get it. Will only notes marked with the geotag show up in the around me feed? I've never marked any of my notes with the geo-location tag. Does that mean no one will see any of my notes on their around me feed? I checked mine local city and it was empty. I changed my location to your city in the USA using a fake gps app and I looked at the feed and see some of your posts but not all of them. I see a couple other posts from other users but not much.
Yep, posts will only show if they mark the location you are in. Those location-exclusive posts will not show in any other feed. This is the new NIP-22. So, there is literally no posts anywhere yet.
If you are considering adding more location services in addition to the feed in the future, maybe add a toggle under privacy to enable and disable location services (enabling would remove the Around You feed and any other items as options). I know Android prompts you to enable locations, but this would be an extra line of defense for those worried about accidentally leaving location on or something like that. Just my 2 unsolicited cents to keep privacy.
GrapheneOS (up to date) with or without GooglePlay services enabled, I see a spinning circle waiting for the location. I see the notification that the location is being accessed but I never see results and it doesn't say where I am. on the other hand OSS Weather knows my address with GPS.
Would you please aska few questions? Does amethyst save location data now? Does it work by phone location? Should phone location be on? What happens with VPN on?
A suggestion. You could ask a diversity of nostriches around the glob to send some events with this tag in order to test and have something to show up.
The app itself doesn't save location data anywhere. It just posts to event when you mark that option. The use of a VPN/Tor doesn't change it. The location comes from on Android's coarse location services which use cell tower triangulation to know roughly where you are. But there are GPS apps that can intercept and force another location.
does Amethyst display the location after the search finishes or before in terms of flow in the app? could it be just not showing the location because it has no results? idk your code. I tried it with and without fine location on.
Yes. I would love an option to manually set. If I take a short vacation I'm likely to still make posts relevant to my home area. Also would rather select the nearest large city to my town. This would increase my chances at finding locally relevant content. And it would allow people with stalking concerns to still participate.
Mine also isn't working. If I select "Around Me", I just get neverending spinning wheel and no location data. Same goes for if I try to include location in a note. Just the spinning wheel. I double-checked that I granted Amethyst location permissions.
I'll also add that it doesn't appear that Amethyst is making any attempt to acquire location because I never see the Android notification icon indicating that location is being accessed.
As Android? I think. Because it runs Play Store. The largest collection of apps in the world. With option for direct APK sideloads. (F-Droid, Direct APK, etc). Way easier to build on too.

I agree (not that it matters 😁)... YEAH...sticking with Android-only is a good idea.
