This looks like some awesome Shit at the hands of @novia 🀩🀩🀩 BRAVO!! Decentralized media is gonna be HUGE!🀟⚑️
I run a peertube instance. peertube is closer to mastodon/pleroma. people wanted the option to "seed" peertube videos using a bittorrent seedbox or their home computer, but the feature was poorly supported and later removed. peertube videos typically live on a VPS or any block storage that is connected to it, and HLS-P2P can optionally reduce the server load by fetching part of the video from other people who happen to be playing it, but it's not as fancy as this new thing.
Saw the news that the rumble ceo wants to integrate btc zaps into the platform. Wonder if we can all spam him into just turning it into a nostr relay πŸ€” (self hosting is obviously ideal but I bet the entry a big player like that in the video hosting space would at least make the process smoother for those less tech savvy)
Are you telling me that it’s the Other Stuff time for real?!?
Youtube content was made on a strategy of many incentives and broad promotion via Google Search and Chrome and cookies. And that will be impossible to replicate. But it could spark a new types of art, education and entertainment. Or recycle some, as podcasts nicely recycled old radio formats. 🀞 I find the most useful informative and educative videos on Youtube having between 2.000 to 50.000 views. And those doesn’t make that much money I guess, so technically these creators can move with no problem since Youtube’s new strategy is to avoid monetization of the small creators. But still the algo gives them a good chance to get a lot of traffic if they work their ass off. So the promise is there.

Currently there is no approval. The video get's posted by the archive service (under it's npub) and it needs to be online to fulfill the recovery request. We are currently experimenting with mirroring the videos between different novia instances, so other can fulfill the request as well. For all of this to work properly we need to integrate payments for people to be incentivised to host videos.

IPFS has the problem that tries to build a global directory / global state - which does not scale. The blossom servers are much simpler and we can just use NOSTR as a discovery network. As soon as we have payments for hosting, people will hopefully host more storage services.

Maybe ... let's find out. We have some ways to go, though.

We rely on blossom servers for storage, i.e. those servers could trace the IP of the uploader. It is recommended to use a VPN for uploading. But you are right - since the request for a video can be sent to a NOSTR relay anonymously, it's harder to trace IPs.

It's a lot of different uses that's what makes it a bit confusing: 1. People download their favourite videos to have a self sovereign archive on their hard drives. 2. They can offer their archives to others (published on NOSTR) 3. Since it's would be costly to host all those videos online, people can request videos on demand. We still have a lot to figure out, though πŸ™
