Someone asked me today “what is the point of Bitcoin?” How would you respond in one sentence without using any technical jargon, buzzwords, or clichés?

The point of bitcoin is to have better money that cannot be poisoned by human greed and corruption.
It’s the best way to store and transmit value through time and space
Imagine paying x$ for your grocery and then, 10 years later, paying less. No other currency can do that. Imagine working at Walmart, your wife/husband stay home to raise your kids, and you still can afford a house. No other currency can do that. The point of a bitcoin standard is to make life more fair for everyone.
Ohhh come on the price is run away and people will always need to eat meaning sell or spend. I dont think this way. Im here for less than 90 years after that i dont guve a fuck what happeneds. My kids they better pay attention thats all i can say. What happens when a country decides to bomb bitcoin mining facility in Texas i think about that too but who cared because it wont happen in my lifetime and the plebs have most of the coins 😉
The first secret of money is....there are secrets of money.
You don't own anything in the digital economy. In a place where you have no property rights, you are a slave. Bitcoin is the first step in the revolution that sets us all free.
Bitcoin is a new kind of money outside the control of anyone that gives you freedom, protects your savings from inflation, and offers an alternative to the current financial system.

“number go up forever” might be cliché by now, but it’s the meat of it

Lol. It can be changed. Of the majority of miners/nodes agree on more than 21million Bitcoins than there will be.
Money used to be - by its nature - fundamentally independent of most government manipulation until modern paper printed money turned it into a completely captured government tool of corruption… which bitcoin solves by restoring money to its fundamentally independent state again, uncontrollable by any particular authority, and thus far less corruptible.

Bitcoin is the divine bridge I’m walking over to go meet and shake hands with my higher self. Bitcoin is going to unlock humanity’s potential and upgrade our consciousness to the point where the aliens will want to meet us, because we are taking care of each other. I look at Bitcoin as one thing. One big giant container that contains all of my hopes and dreams. It contains yours too. Just like I think there is one great divine intelligence, that we all individually tap into.., bitcoin is now discovered, and it is one big giant nuclear reactor, that we can plug into to improve our lives individually and as a species. Bitcoin is me. Bitcoin is you. I know I want all of me, do you want all of you? A little long winded, but I get passionate and spiritual about Bitcoin because of what it has done to my mind and soul. It is exhilarating to exit this bullshit system I have been forced fed. Muthafuckin ₿itcoin, bitches!

Every year that the US fails to balance the budget, the purchasing power of the US Dollar falls between 5% and 15%. Bitcoin's purpose is to give people around the world a place to put their money that does not sink into the abyss.

Bitcoin is the most hopeful story you will hear for generations to come.
The point of Bitcoin is to provide a form of durable, fixed supply money that can be transmitted over long distances without relying on any one or few gatekeepers of infrastructure, thereby preventing censorship as well as dilution of value through fractional reserve banking.
To give humanity a good money again, to remove the thing out of the hands of govs who impose it on us by legal tender laws, and then print it to steal from us.
To ensure for the first time in human history that every bit of time you worked maintains it's value into the future

One word is enough: freedom.
A lot of the replies here seem to answer "what bitcoin is" (yes, it's freedom money). But the question was "what's the POINT of bitcoin"? I don't think it's enough to focus on "what problems of our current world will bitcoin fix". There are many! What happens after those problems are fixed, and the world gets to run on a fair and efficient bitcoin standard for a while, maybe a long while? I'd say that the POINT of bitcoin is to bring about a literal Star Trek future, where humanity flourishes on Earth, spreads out into the universe and climbs up on the Kardashev scale.

Best to respond with some constructive questions…. Such as to ask them to consider what’s the point of money, and how could it be improved?
