It could also include the reason why you’re calling. This ux seems way better than what we currently have

call receivers should be able to establish quotas
also change their own acceptance status depending on what they're doing
then callers would be well informed about whether they can or cant call at that time
maybe the button to reject a call should be many buttons
like one would be "please, is this urgent? otherwise send a message or call later"
Thats actually a pretty good idea, you could get a message like [(name) would like to talk about (reason for wanting to call), expires in (amount of time)] or something to that effect.
😂 You don’t have to answer a call. Calling someone isn’t rude and not picking up isn’t rude either this is how the world worked before the internet.
You can already send a text message first asking the other person to call you back.

This seems to me like an somewhat automated solution to a problem easily solved through simple communication like text.

Yes yes yes. Nobody would design it the current way from scratch. That we are still emulating the behavior of the original Siemens pipe ringer from 1877 in software is nuts when you think about it. I never would have thought about how stupid this is until you mentioned it. But it is insanely stupid.

plz stop incoming spam calls. wish I had a personal AI answering service to screen for spam and only allow callers thru that want to give me money and block callers trying to convince me to part with my money.
IOS26 uses ai to screen calls. The caller states name and purpose and the receiver has the choice to accept, otherwise AI replies that a message will be sent to the receiver.

Except for the very few who I have white-listed, I already require a text in advance. I suspect by adding this little bit of friction, most would-be lazy callers instead opt for a more succinct text conversation anyway.
I literally only do that. People are busy and phonecalls can monopolize one's time so I find it best to plan them ahead of time.
I guess I'm just not the target audience for this.

I have one friend who will *never* talk on the phone. We've been on a phone call ONCE in 15 years. it works. she just hates phone talks. 🤷♀️
