Would you still use nostr if you had to pay for it?

Any price to access a network that calls itself "decentralized" is ridiculous and should always be ridiculed. One of the reasons nostr is indeed constantly ridiculed and nobody joins, is because it was designed for grifters to lie about "decentralization" with a nickel-and-diming client-server model instead of being p2p.
That's the spirit
In its current state, no. In its future state, probably also no.
Who do I pay? Isn't that what zaps are?
Paid relays are going to be the only ones offering large, free relays, as they can cross-finance them. Freemium.
Let's say all relays require payment and it's whoever sets relays up, that's who you pay. So it's a mixture of people and maybe (let's pretend nostr grows) companies...¯\_(ツ)_/¯
There are already quite wealthy Nostr companies. They just aren't getting wealthy running relays, as investors understand that relays are largely a never-ending labour of love.
Are there?? Like actually profitable, wealthy nostr companies? That are getting their wealth from nostr??
How??? There's 24 of us.
Or do you mean the grants economy?
Yeah, tens of millions of $$ floating around, at the moment.
You have got to be kidding. Surely.
Why does nothing work lol.
There’s also the question of running one’s own relay.
Because things don't work merely because someone throws a bunch of money at it.
Paid relays are a good thing. But I don’t think it would be reasonable for there to be no free ones.
I would continue to use it and do pay for it. 🤟
Although, the best paid relays work well alone because they aggregate and broadcast for you, and function as a sort of websocket proxy.
I do pay. roughly $3 a month I think.
I like the idea of a clear business model. Why would someone run a relay for free? Makes no sense. They must be some kind of freak.
Consider removing the Palestinian flag. Those poor fucks have enough on their plate without idiots like you 'helping' their cause.
Building and operating a bitcoin node costs resources. Your argument about free decentralization is weak, like your asshole.
Pay for perks sure.
Like a pretty nip05 or my own relay.
Enshittifying clients to bully users towards paid features is lame though.
You pay to send Bitcoin so yes I would pay to access nostr.
I expect the amount would be small 🤔
Most won't pay for social media
Look at Gab and the Fediverse
Pay to post would make sense. Disincentivize spam.
But having a subscription model just to browse would be dumb.
I suspect the amount would be relay costs (?)
So... How much does it actually cost to run a relay?
I assume it depends on the size?
How much for small, medium, large and massive?
#asknostr
A small STRFRY relay is ridiculously cheap, you can turn it off and on in a split second too

When you say small...relay what does that mean? How many people would that serve? And how cheap is ridiculously cheap, per month / annum?
I don’t know but it clearly fit on a 5$ vps. The expensive part is disk space probably. If you run it at home then you can run a decent relay for basically nothing
Ask ai
Or #asknostr
@mike any views?
He has used the hashtag
Pyramid can run for on a ~$1/mo VPS and a accomedate a few thousand people.
If one wants to offer media/file hosting and all that along with the relay, the cost will vary by how much storage in wanted/needed.
Typos... I just woke up. 🫠
No
I dunno why I said no when I literally pay for nostr services. I guess if I had to pay for all of it, then no.
You can run #Citrine 🍋 on any Android phone and it probably costs microsats, but someone who doesn't want to pay wouldn't do that, either. And we have the https://nostr21.com, which costs literally only 21 sats per month. So, 1¢/month.
It's not the cost. It's that many balk at the idea that they should pay at all.
not true
Sorry, all servers!

Its about half that for my relay
