This same cohort is vehemently against BIP110 now.

Because it’s gay and retarded
Glad I don't fall for this stuff and never used a coinkite product. Hope people learned from this experience.
I used Ledger before I bought a Coldcard and the Coldcard was far better imo. I ended up with four of them and liked them a lot. Really wish Coinkite had stuck with the open source license and none of this shit would have happened. I just ordered a Jade Plus a few days ago.
Yeah for sure. Not sure how much it would have really helped though since the project was source viewable. Most people haven't had the skills in the past to verify things on their own but I hope that starts changing.
this.
Greed and complacency are definitely to be reckoned with here. If I were them I’d be donating all of my Coinkite sponsorship money at the very least.
I have faith that
@ODELL will take this learning forward. It seems like a waste to ostracize someone who has a good heart, and was one of the main visionaries behind
@OpenSats?
Ouch. That video hits pretty hard.
I think Odell already apologized for any role he might have played in persuading people. I believe he was talking in good faith, but damn.
At the end of the day we all have to take responsibility for ourselves and not blame others. I will be doing a security audit, most likely using AI in the next few weeks on my setup, as it’s been 3 years since my last one. And then update if necessary all info for loved ones when I’m gone.
jizz money
You keep sharing this video without the essential context.
You know it but for the people who don't: Odell told people to roll dice for years; it was how he taught ColdCard storage. He started with the advice in the clip after people who used his method didn't do the number of dice rolls he recommended. They lost bitcoin, he felt terrible, and he changed to the advice above. Yes, given what we know now, that was foolish, but that context changes the picture.
FFS, dude. Maybe you think you're on a mission of truth but it seems more like vengeance.
its not vengeance. its a tall poppy vendetta.
never heard this before!
Yes, that rings true. There's a glee - and not just from him - in cutting down someone who's been successful in the space.
ugh
the entire account is dedicated to harm. even the name. its a pseudonym for someone with a desire to destroy.
yeah ☹️
You're doing backflips to stand up for someone that would take your whole life savings if he thought it would make his Ten31 portfolio go up 1%
I'm doing backflips to make sure that people who are seeing that video have the whole story.
Your claims about Odell may or may not be true, but people who have to decide for themselves have the right to see context for that clip.
Very unfortunate that they were live, had been drinking and attempted to inject a bit of humor. I’m sure there are a few regrets regarding this. Also, the ColdCard entropy weakness was not known at the time. That said, buying a gun for protection doesn’t protect you from self-inflicted wounds, that’s your responsibility. Self-custody is like that. Very sorry for the [very] few who lost due to NO fault of their own. Bad actors should burn in hell but it ain’t these guys. My2Sats.
If you’re going to start a pissing contest, move it down wind from the rest of us will yah?
Responsibility needs to be taken

If you self-custody Bitcoin, watch this video and read this essay.

There are probably dozens of people who bear some responsibility for shilling the shit and not calling out NVK as an asshole, like Matt and Marty. But the reason why the CC hack was *so bad* is more because of the toxic maxi element generally.
The social cohesion of maximalism made a movement possible, with CC as a necessary foundation block. They NEEDED a Bitcoin-only affinity project for self-custody. Fucking with that calculator became part of people's identity and that got CC into a LOT more hands than just regular paid ad buys and normal sponsor lies.
it's pernicious and difficult because from an outside noob perspective most of the people responsible for selling that bullshit maxi shit aren't overtly maxis, but they *profit from maximalism.
these are ones that virtue signal for the maxis, but still say they are "open minded".
Theyre fence straddlers for business sake and "dont trust, verify" is just lip service to a good idea. None of them are very technical and there's a lack of incentive to encourage their followers to learn.
Its a sad state of affairs and this is also why we monero.
Odell has ALWAYS been a scammer.
He's already got opensats giving money away to the red team grifters in response to this.
Instead of compensating his victims, people that took his advice.
Nah just give all the money to Hamilton and Calle to use AI to create fake bugs and cast daubt on everyone else
How has he been successful? He’s only shilled subversive products that hurt Bitcoin and run a shitty podcast. Maybe he’s made some money, but all that money is the fruit of a poisonous tree, made at the expense of honest Bitcoiners and at the cost of their life savings. It was publicly known for years that Odell was assisting incompetent and bad actors in a racketeering and scam ring, with OpenSats grantees who had direct access to it testifying *in public* to such facts. And in return, these people with integrity had Odell and NVK sabotage their businesses and revoke their grants.

to be fair there was only a brief period when i liked odell until i realized his circle jerk with nvk/miljan and how they have completely rigged funding so that they friends win and others lose (see seedsigner, etc)
nvk even called me one time to try to silence me to stop talking bad about opensats. Its hilarious. They are fucking scammers.

Spoiler alert: jb55 did lose his grants for blowing the whistle on the fraudsters Odell and NVK months before the collapse. If OpenSats and Ten31 had any integrity at all, they would publicly apologize to him, fire Odell, and give jb55, the person that acted with personal integrity at great personal expense Odell’s current position and compensation.
youre not brave.
youre not a “courageous truth teller”
youre another ego with giant mouth hole in an attention economy.
and a time drain.
Your only move is to psycho analyze people thru the internet. It's quite pathetic and arrogant.
The irony is that you have Odell Fellatio Syndrome. Not sure if it's a weird parasocial relationship, misplaced loyalty or you're genuinely gay but it's time you seek help.
Odell does not have a good heart. He, alongside NVK and miljan, worked for years to use OpenSats to enrich Ten31 investments, a conflict of interest, and to specifically sabotage the businesses through slander campaigns and grant revocation who were competitors to Odell’s Ten31 portfolio or blowed the whistle on this scam and fraud:
Damus developer jb55 talked about this months before the collapse, and in return they sabotaged his business and attacked him personally.

The drama and projection do not help your case. Also you seem weirdly obsessed with Odell.
he's the biggest problem in Bitcoin right now. Odell delenda est.
lol
way to prove my point
Way to miss the point. his violation of moral and legal ethics lead to Bitcoiners who followed every rule and guideline he gave them losing 100 million dollars. Removing his ability to do it again is like imprisoning SBF or Alex Mashinsky. It’s a moral imperative. Fraudsters must be punished.
This ColdCard disaster is horrifying on so many levels and you're trying to leverage that as emotional weight behind your crusade.
It's absurd to hold him 100% responsible for the loss of funds - in part because there were others promoting CC, in part because people who followed his full guidelines (for years) rolled their own dice, and mostly because you're not considering at all the benefit of having him - and others - pushing relentless for self-custody.
He’s not 100% responsible. When you are only a part of a criminal conspiracy we call that being a “co-conspirator”. Generally you are punished according to the law with equal weight to the actual perpetrators, even though you may have only been a small part of it, you still planned to commit fraud. Odell committed fraud against depositors, and fraud against the public by using OpenSats to enrich his Ten31 portfolio. He deserves to be judged negatively for being a fraud, even though it was NVK that is the chief proximate cause of the loss of funds, he is still morally responsible.
Compounding the fraud is that he is still doing the exact same thing, and engaging the same conflict of interests. Now he is out promoting Bitkey. Bitkey has insane risks attached to biometrics and inheritance. Why is he promoting it? Because he is personally financially connected to the founders of Block. If he were acting in people’s best interests he would be recommending Trezor, but instead he is recommending yet another risky “innovative” wallet because he is financially connected to the people responsible. He repeats the same corrupt behavior endlessly. He’s a piece of shit scammer.
It isn't just this incident either, he lost a million fucking dollars on the Samourai deal. A million dollars was raised for a fucking plea deal. A federal criminal plea deal costs maybe 30k, potentially slightly more. He burned roughly 950k out of incompetence or corruption. We don’t get an accountancy of the funds, so it’s hard to tell which.
He also grifted all of Jack Dorsey’s money earmarked for Nostr into Primal, which is not a Nostr client at all. It’s a centralized service that happens to publish data to Nostr, but when you read notes on Primal it reads from their “caching service” exclusively, and does not use the Nostr protocol at all for reading data. They have been caught red-handed using this centralized server for censorship.
He also similarly supports Spark projects. All Spark traffic goes through a single centralized server which gives them the power of surveillance and censorship. Sound familiar?
This is what Odell does repeatedly: fund shitty censorware and surveillanceware and lose a ton of people’s money. He’s a corrupt, scheming piece of shit and you are a fucking cuckold pay pig that needs to break out of the Stockholm syndrome that your parasocial relationship has put you into.
I can't verify most of these accusations myself, and it sounds like you can't do that either for some of them - but I think it's fair to say that Odell's reputation has taken a huge hit and that people will be cautious about listening to his recommendations (or anyone else's) going forward.
It's funny to me that you rant about one particular person and then the only way you can justify your hatred is to conclude that everyone who doesn't agree with you has Stockholm syndrome.
you can verify literally all of them. Just look at the Primal code. It’s not a secret that it reads exclusively from their centralized caching service.
It’s also not a secret what a federal plea deal costs with a private attorney. You can call a few up today and get a few quotes, and find one to do it for 30-50k.
yes, I'm sure I can verify some, but not exactly everyone's role in each one
You’re being intentionally obtuse and lazy. It’s trivial to verify that Odell lost 950k in the Samourai thing. It’s public record he raised a mil. He admits it. Go ask an attorney in your family if a million fucking dollars is a reasonable amount to spend for a federal plea deal.
I got involved in this thread because I didn't like that a half truth was being presented as evidence. I wasn't actually making other claims one way or another about Odell, and I'm still not because I don't know much about any of these claims.
Regarding Odell and the Samourai case: what exactly is your claim? That Matt Odell raised money for their defense and then spent it?
Why would Odell be responsible for deciding how to spend money on the Samourai plea deal?
My claim is that a federal plea deal costs 30k and Odell raised a million. Who was taking the donors for a ride is up in the air, but Odell had a responsibility as a “rights organization” to vet the affair and make sure people’s valuable money was not wasted via corruption. On p2prights.org, the fundraising site, he made a very specific claim:
https://web.archive.org/web/20250426105751/https://p2prights.org/projects.html
> Financial prudence is essential; therefore, the fund will evaluate the cost-effectiveness of different types of legal support
He did not do this, at all.
Nor did he do this:
> We will assess the likelihood and scale of success in each case. … the probability of legal victory, and the value of the legal precedent that success might establish.
No real rights organization like the EFF would hand a law firm for someone who didn’t even go to trial yet a million fucking dollars. That’s more than it takes to go through the *entire appeals process*. I should know, I forged federal criminal precedent in my federal computer crimes case which I won on appeal. I did it with roughly 80k total, including trial and appeals. So I know very well what things cost in regards to computer crimes prosecutions.
> Why would Odell be responsible for deciding how to spend money on the Samourai plea deal?
Read the claims on his website, he claims to be responsible in multiple ways right there. It’s just another way he completely abdicated his fiduciary duty and lost yet another million dollars of other people’s money. It’s literally all he does, ever.
