the core downfall of mastodon is that every instance is an opportunity to censor potentially thousands of individuals on the grounds of vague reasons such as “in appropriate content”
their entire architecture is based around the idea that a single instance admin has the power to decide what its users are allowed to see, and you can’t easily move to another relay without rebuilding your social graph.
why people still use this protocol is mind boggling to me.
let users control their own feed ffs. Individuals and clients should have this power, not relay tinpot dictators. View quoted note →

It’s remarkable that Nostr seems like the only protocol being built right now that appreciates that speech IS free unless and until moves are undertaken to restrict it
Exactly why I stopped using it almost as soon as I’d signed up for it
Further, why are so many wasting precious capital on bridging to/from nostr?
The big one you hit on is the fact that your social graph doesn’t go with you, and part of that is related to why you also have no real global feed. It doesn’t even feel public, which defeats the whole purpose.
The instance “moderation” and censorship is just icing on the let’s-trade-one-silo-for-a-different-silo cake.
smh. I love innapropiate content. its my fav
this. i left mastodon only to find the worst of it here on nostr. not sure if there's a way to switch those bridges off.
I’ve asked for this very feature.
You’re right
I just couldn’t get people on my instance because they didn’t understand fediverse in the slightest
🤔 re-noted this and only the quote shows up (w/o your text) #shadowbanned

what app is this ?
How would one know amethyst is a censoring pos if they started there?
Interesting, it shows up the same on rebased/ soapbox.
partly shows up on bsky lol

@jb55 @fedi_block_bot@annihilation.social
Users can control their own feed: there's servers that moderate more and servers that moderate less. To me it's "less work" to moderate all the content myself
It's not this one, but I really liked Tusky client! Super smooth and it had all features that I needed without visual bloat...
People on Mastodon maybe just wanna be led and don't care about self-responsibility 😅
Unless you self host… which is actually just being sovereign, something folks bang on about all the time but don’t really act on.
Reading Rees-Mogg but host all data on g99gle lol
Also a more thoughtful response… that maybe peoples’ first step to a better online world. Huge amounts came to the Fediverse in 2022 when Elno bought X.
Call it a gateway drug to the open internet! I still like the Fediverse a lot, I’ve made lots of friends there. I host my on Mastodon, PeerTube as well as Matrix but non of that would’ve happened had I stayed in Zuckerberg’s hell hole. I’ve learned a lot and I’m thankful for that.
An instance is just a single server DB, it's a SQL protocol.
I feel like maybe the downfall of most social media is trying to serve as both the discover and discussion elements, especially when it costs nothing to pin one's note to a global corkboard.
A mastodon instance seems like a pretty good solution if you want the online equivalent of a local/regional meetup or club.
Just as most of the Nostr clients I've tried aren't very good for keeping up with posts from specific users unless I go to the trouble of saving their profile as a browser bookmark.

Mastodon sought to bring the "power" of social media to everyone but they also wanted "some form of moderation"... And this is what it turned into.
To be fair, people are "used" to moderation - so it was natural for them to implement it. But, they really shouldn't have.
Welp, good thing Nostr does not have that. ^^
In Mastodon an entire instance can block another instance. You’re correct it’s not truly public. How can mastodon be anti censorship when admins just decide that xyz instance is too raunchy for me to see. Let me decide for myself.
I second that… THIS ⬆️
I guess that does work if you only follow 20 people 🤣
Someone recommended Nostur but looks like it's iOS only.
I'd settle for being able to manually sort my following list.
I suppose you can remove whatever relays you use that bridge over the Fediverse content, no?
lol
Maybe there is a follower limit.
I forgot. What client do you use?
Everyserver is blocking Everyserver on #Mastodon
Just take a look at this Fediverse-Block-List
https://fba.ryona.agency/scoreboard?blockers=500
Mastodon is the most zensored "Net" in the world.
But hey: Who needs an animal that doesn´t exist anymore, when you can have nostr?
I tried to build my own sovereign node[1] and failed, it’s too difficult. People shouldn’t need to know how to run servers to be sovereign.

I’m dumb and proudly sport a smoothbrain. How is an instance operator different to a relay operator?
I’ve had to nuke my social graph 3 times after many instance admins saying I can’t talk about certain things, not to mention servers going offline and I have to start again. So done with that garbage. Just use nostr.
interesting that they censor content 🤔
invasion of privacy without choice is my problem ....still looking 4 solution
No i outright assume they are attacking freedom at all angles at this point
Maybe a zapraiser for fine grained muting controls? Would need a way to specify which client you're donating for though.
Wow, if you couldn’t how on earth have I managed?!
I know it’s hard, I can’t code and I’ve sunk hours into Yunohost and Linux to get a home server running. My note was tongue in cheek but also there’s also so much reliance on the big platforms who are niw taking everything we ever made as fodder for LLMs and such like.
Personally I’m trying to push back in whatever way i can, even if it is only baby steps.
I’d contribute to a bounty. 🫡
I just wanted a simple single-user instance but the protocol is just too complicated. Thats when I found nostr and it was smooth sailing ever since
Fair play. I still like the Fediverse a lit, made some good friends there but this place is super intersting too.
Anything is better than Zuck’s dystopian hell hole or Elno’s new toy.
Mastadon is centralized, and is faking decentralization. Simple as that. It's also owned by a disgusting individual.
Yep.. the creator of Mastodon is a horrible person.. he doesn't believe in free speech unless it's speech he agrees with. And the flood garbage I told overwhelmed with that apparently no one (especially him) finds disagreeable made 4chan/b/ look like Nickelodeon.
@elsat do you know how many clients are able to display zap polls? Could be a good zapraiser method. Other suggestions appreciated!
Do you mean do not show any notes from Mastodon?
iOS poured ice cold water over zap experimentation on damus.
If I remember correct Amethyst had zap polls.
Once Will gets notedeck & android out damus will be able to resume zapxerimentation
I think blocking notes with nostr addresses from some domain.
That's not entirely true. If you export a CSV file, you can absolutely take your contacts with you to a different instance. It is less decentralized and more of a hub and spoke Federation model. It really is a step between the centralized social media such as Twitter and the completely decentralized social media such as Nostr
@Alex Gleason is it possible to specify mastodon domains on nostr more fine grained than mostr.pub?
Agree 100%. What’s At protocol’s downfall?
Seems like fediverse but worse
Do we have a central (irony, yes) place to browse and back nostr bounties?
Yes.
There was a (maybe nostr based?) websit. Dont rememeber how widely adopted it became.
I would usually add a bounty hashtag to a short nostr note, and document on github for damus, occasionally for other projects.
Mostly Primal on Android. Desktop time is pretty limited lately.
If there were one place to look, I’d shop it like a Christmas list. As I’d bet many would.
This is exactly why I became disillusioned with the concept of the fediverse. You are still at the mercy of the admins and instances will be blocked just for federating with “undesirable” instances. It in effect rewards censorship by the admins so they themselves won’t be censored.
#Nostr fixes this
I got booted from one server for posting photos of my keto meals and carb count.
I believe it. as a white cis male my existence is frowned upon there
The moderation is the reason that people like and use it. Nostr may be about censorship resistance, but that is not the only possible type of forum, nor even the best kind usually. Censorship resistance leads to spam and bullying and anti social behaviour.
Activitypub is about decentralized moderation: your own community should be running the server and sharing the moderation load.
In Activitypub it's deliberately not the burden of the individuals to perform moderation, it's a responsibility delegated to community managers.
Picking an instance is picking your moderation team.
If you don't like the moderation team, pick a different one. Or run a server yourself. Mastodon probably isn't the best for a single user server. Over-engineered for that. Gotosocial is very easy to install if you want a single user instance.
But most people don't want a single user instance, they want to share the moderation responsibilities with the community.
