The assholes at Vultr decided to ban me yesterday. They asked for explanations of what I used my server for and when I said "nostr" they just told me to get the fuck out. They gave me 12 hours to access my data and migrate all my dozens of relays and services. All while treating me like a fucking criminal. I searched for an AI to help me migrate all my stuff and found this Warp tool that is pretty damn good. It came up with a single one linger to deploy my strfry instances, do strfry db migration, configure HTTP server, everything! I can even tell it "hey, setup blossom on blossom.f7z.io and only allow my pubkey to upload stuff" Damn fucking wild. A lifetime ago, I used to be a sysops at a hosting company. Migrating this much stuff would have taken me about a week of fighting old package versions, database migrations, updating configurations. Now I literally gave root access to an LLM to help me out and it literally did it extremely well. The setup it accomplished is already better than my very ad-hoc deployment I had in my previous server. Warp terminal app (with ref-link, just like @General Ned Ludd taught me) πŸ‘‡ View quoted note β†’

Are these normal? Could NOSTR be illegal? We should remember this attitude and never use such services in the future. I had my youtube channel similarly restricted because its content did not meet the ethical standards of the platform, and it was about Bitcoin.
First of all, what the fuck. That said, I'm glad some good came of this. I'm going to check this out and see if this can make my life easier.
root access to an LLM... ooph. could it have hallucinated some nonesense for a moment and accidentally run "sudo rn -rf /"?? Or does it ask for each command to be executed and the human must say OK?
Still curious why they asked for what purposes you use their services and what is wrong with Nostr from their point of view... Thx for the Warp link, I'm procrastinating a migration of a (for testing purposes) VPS since the announcement of CentOS7 EOL. Will check it out!
Remember this when the next person tries to persuade you that EU alternatives are better.

I'm not sure what other hosting provider you landed on, but I've been using 1984 and they haven't given me any guff.
Most (all?) AI agent software gives you the option to manually confirm every move the LLM makes.
Where you running a free nostr relay? or free nostr image host? If you were. Then it's probably because the freeloaders use free Nostr relays to upload questionable things that might be illegal depending on which country the server is in. When I ran my server hosting company. We have no choice but to quickly kick clients off our server due to illegal activities. Most of the time it's because the client allowed anyone to upload anything to their servers and they didn't moderate their server. Internet users would then send complaints to the ISP and the ISP would threaten to ban us. The ISP doesn't mess around. This is why you should never allow users without payment to upload things to your server. The free relays are full of trash. I can see this happening and it will give Nostr a bad name. Most administrators just setup the relay and never moderate.
The wildest, most mind blowing part of this is where you gave an LLM root on your box. Vultr has sucked since they began (maybe they were cool for 3 months).
"They have been charging me 18% GST since 2 yrs, however, they have not paid taxes to the Indian Government. When I asked them to send the tax invoices, they ignored me, when i asked for the refund of the taxes collected, they refused to refund. They have collected more than $200 in taxes yet not paid a single dollar to Indian Government." Interesting revenue strategy...
"Vultr is a huge gamble. The servers are somewhat fast, but they're really not. The staff are utterly unhelpful, you can ask a simple question and they will spew out a long irrelevant reply, almost as if its an AI just signing human names. I simply asked for a concise yes/no for a very basic question, and they proceed to list this huge list of irrelevant resources and guides. The deploy page is such a labyrinth, making it much more complicated than it has to be. They will charge you more than you used and rip you off. While it may be good for power efficient things, at that point, just host it yourself. Everything is portrayed to be extremely professional, but it's really not."
"Absolute Scam, Stay Away, Save your time and Money!! I had an absolutely terrible experience with Vultr, and I strongly advise everyone to stay away from this scam company. Their customer service is non-existent, and their platform is misleading. They promise services, but once you add your credit card, they charge you without providing any actual instance or service. In my case, they charged me $68 without reason, and after contacting my bank, it was proven to be financial fraud. Despite repeated attempts to reach out to their support team, I received no response or resolution. I wasted hours trying to get my money back, but their team either ignored my complaints or gave generic, unhelpful responses. It’s clear that Vultr is running a shady operation with unfair billing practices. They take your money without delivering the promised service and leave you stranded. I wouldn’t trust them with any personal or financial information. If you’re considering Vultr, please think twiceβ€”there are far more reliable and trustworthy alternatives out there. Save yourself the frustration and avoid this fraudulent company at all costs!"

When I was first getting into "self"-hosting I tried Vultr. I just wanted a simple email server. I bought the cheapest VPS available and tried to open the ports. Well guess what? They wanted to get me KYC-ed. TLDR: #fuckvultr

I think there is something fishy going on. They mention hosting a blossom server so it may be that they have received and ignored abuse reports relating to copyrighted material or CSAM. It also feels unusual they would say β€œnostr is not allowed”, considering most people or hosts do not know what Nostr is. I want more details about the exchange. If they were asked to take down the content. As is, screenshots (ofc redacted personal info)

I'm not understanding the problem from their perspective. Did they give you any explanation for the cancellation? image

Is there no redress that can be claimed against Vultr? I think most lay persons would question the need (and legality) for Vultr to treat you with such obvious disdain. If no redress is possible, then something needs to be done to ensure such mistreatments can be challenged by some kind of appeal to a neutral Third Party. In the U.K. we call such things ... an "Ombudsman". DEFINITION: βž€ a person who investigates, reports on, and helps settle complaints; ➁ an individual usually affiliated with an organization or business who serves as an advocate for patients, consumers, employees, etc.

how sad . KYC = know your customer is really hasstle sometimes that they turn it to censor if the server didn't comply with their TOS . but hey we are talking about Nostr . i just don't understand . Warp teminal is not a migration tools , rather it is a interface that you run your command line migratio tools like rsync . scp , mysqldump , right ? to migrate your data faster from vultr , man can use rsync , or use tool site like digital ocean , or compress archieve , yes? where did you put your server now ?
Any chance you could share the rejection reason from Apple? Was it about zaps? Also, was the Vultr shutdown related to NSFW images? Or something else?
They still use a third-party to process your payment to convert it immediately to cash for their checking account at their bank. The CEO seems like a good guy at least.
