What would you plant? Can’t be a ton of sun under that canopy.
Not sure? What can I?
@SeedVaultMarket any help here? What can you plant under a sugar maple? I have one as well and have just tried to plant around the edges of the yard that get more sun.
That’s kinda what I’m gonna do…
There’s 2 or 3 spots that get pretty much full sun light…
Sure, it's not allelopathic like black walnuts
Well shit it is… I’ve never even heard that word before…
I used to shade garden in the front yard at our place in the burbs. But shade in my latitude is almost necessary while shade further north is going to limit you substantially.
Start looking at shade tolerant.. actually hold on let me see if i can find the website i just remembered. Brb

Off the cuff, i would say some type of allium will probably do ok. Smaller stuff like chives or wild onions/garlic..
If the aesthetic of the tree doesn’t matter. I’d say cut branches down to let more light through. But if it provides a dense shade, it can be tough. Though I personally don’t have experience with them, I’ve read elderberries handle shade well.
Awesome thank you!
I was looking into wild onions!
Thank you!
Id have to guess the tree won’t last though this decade as we just had to have one removed last year… as are most in the neighborhood are gone now too…
Thank you!
I've got two varieties of local wild alliums I can dig up here over the next month or so.
They're likely to do well in your area considering how well they tolerate our abusive climate.
If you'd like I can send some to you for some of that sweet vanilla stuff you got. 😜
Are these garlic chives?
I think one of the varieties might be an escaped garlic chive cultivar that has become fairly feral. The other is definitely a wild onion type that sets bulbuls at the end of the flower stalks in early/mid summer iirc
I’d have to see what they look like but I think those are both of similar types to what I have established here for 3 decades now… and were taken from a 50+ year old garden of my great grandparents…
I can take pictures, but if you have an analog in your area, definitely use those! You dont need mine
Id like to see pics, of course no rush and whenever is fine!
Happened across these while I was out fishing. This is the second variety I was talking about. Probably my favorite.

Mine look really similar but the flowers on mine look different… they don’t protrude like these do…
Interesting. Id love to see that
I’ll try to remember to get a picture of them!
It’s a setup
Why u say that?
