I think the bigger threat is outlawing unsafe manual driving cars when self driving capabilities become advanced enough to actually replace manually driven cars. It will simply be too unsafe to allow people to drive themselves. image

Exactly, but by then we might already have gulags 2.0
Cars are horrible. This is something I try to beat the drum on regularly. Better yet, regular people like me with dealer access have your vehicles location history and so much more just by giving me your VIN.
Reminds me of Tron. "Their vehicles aren't designed to go off grid. They'll not function on this terrain" Makes me want to buy on old diesel engine and feed it fry oil. Maybe move to the Arizona desert and build an earthship.
The other day I had this strange thought. When cars are “self driving” the owner of a company can literally kill anyone they want with a click of a button. Just make the car drive off road over a bridge.
The messed up part is you can’t hide from something like this even if you keep your old car running. With cameras everywhere they see your license plate and can push a button to have a self-driving car run into you/run off the road if you’re a malcontent on their list.
It has gotten increasing attention from the hacking community. Example-Defcon has had a "car hacking" village and featured talks in the matter for some time. I see a failure to network between groups and a general dismissive attitude from most of the (auto) service industry and general public overall.
Cars don't need computers. Give it a microcontroller with some FOSS running on it to tune performance, and maybe active traction. If self-driving is the future, we need an anonymized FOSS solution. Advertisers don't need to know how much lead is in my foot or how close I follow, let alone all the rest of that privacy nightmare.
At least we can opt out for now with older cars. Eventually those options will be less and less.
The bottom line is this: If we want to have fech that isn't dystopian, we have to build it ourselves. Now look, I don't make cars, but I do make #smart #thermostats that don't spy on you. #HestiaPi I'm also started to get involved with the #AirGradient One, which is an #OpenSource air quality monitoring system. Both projects are 100% #OpenHardware too. This is how I live. If you want nice things, build it or support someone who does. Or don't and just complain about it on social media instead. You do you.

In EU, new cars will scream and bully you for exceeding the speed limit that they read off the street signs. Just buy older cars, new ones are full of shit no one asked for
A lot of people willingly bring Alexa and other 'smart' devices into their homes. 95% of people won't care at all. That's why manufacturers and governments can do it. As long as it's convenient, the sheep will allow it.
Where are the GPS or cellular chips and can they simply be unplugged or intentionally damaged? I don't need to go dark yet, but I like being ready.
I, for a short stint, had Google home devices in every room. Alarm clock, broadcast dinner's ready, timers, doorbell that showed the video on the screen in the kitchen and phones. But then I started realizing. I still have the doorbell and locks and a couple of google home devices, but it's nuts when I'm making my seedphrase with my wife for my cold card and she was writing it down and I said, sorry, I can't say the words out loud because your phone listens as does google home. All the technology is in place to make 1984 a reality and places like the UK are beginning to make the actions of "the party" a reality.

That’s because these mega corps love total control just like their political counterparts Automotive software should be open source, just like all other software, otherwise we’re all slaves to their whims
I don't disagree. All attempts at open sourcing anything (by aftermarket, small scale operations) is generally met with immediate rejection by well lobbied state authority.
I can confirm that many US-based Porsche dealerships discretely install a tracking device on cars as they arrive from Germany prior to customer delivery. It’s done within hours of the vehicle arriving at the dealer. Customer requests to remove it are deflected or outright refused, forcing him to threaten to kill the deal if the tracking device stays. Only then will they grudgingly remove it. The tracking is performed by a company named Stargard. If you obtain account credentials and login, you’ll see they keep a log of every location the vehicles visits.

The LTE modem is usually inside the stereo/multimedia screen housing Some cars have several modems, somewhere around the ECU

Wtff, this is ridiculous. And companies already want to add subscriptions for heated seats and other crap.
Bitcoin offers an alternatives to funding and incentivizing research and development. However, there is little interest shown by BTC maxis in moving this direction.

Modern cars litteraly have sim cards, find it and remove it. Never connect your phone to your car in any form of way. Never save locations as destination in the cars dashboard. If you too lazy, get an old car

this is astonishing but it would be naïve to think just clicking some buttons will actually turn the tracking off
Insane, will get an old car, don't want to deal with all that sh*t 😤

I suspect if you put in your Tesla VIN you may be surprised...
That's not how it works, you should open an LLC and buy car on LLC name. Lawyers know how to do it properly. Privacy is not free....
