First step is probably just to jailbreak them. And then fight car industry lobbyists that try to ban said.
Yeah, most can probably be fixed on a firmware level...
I've got a privacy focussed car, with no onboard AI computer nor bluetooth/wifi/5G antenna. Just plastic buttons and a CD player radio for the dashboard 🕶️
You can get a PhD in gulag tech cars, or you can get a pre-gulag tech (i.e. old) car.
I will only drive one with CarpheneOS
But they're going to argue that custom firmware is bad "for safety". And they're not necessarily wrong, especially if they deliberately make an entangled mess where safety-critical control systems share code paths with their spyware.
Which won't be allowed into any EU city within a decade or so. And between maintaining a Battlestar Galactica style old timer and reverse engineering a future modern car, I'll probably enjoy the latter more.
Though maybe there'll be some pre-gulag electric cars where you can retrofit whatever solid state fancy batteries they'll have in 2050.
ohh, yes, 100%!
I was also thinking about this - I would say for start - a new car with root access might be enough? 🤔
We will be able to turn off all annoying features, yet get a comfort of a well developped vehicle...
nowadays we still can buy cars made before 2015: without a simcard, but I am sure those will get banned soon... especially in EU.. 😢
Pleaze

I want a car that does not have all the fancy features, no wifi, no 2g, no bluetooth, no GPS... A big roomy drivable box that doesnt fail me. Is that too much to ask?
Something like this, but not as old.... Dont want to spend the rest of my life replacing car parts... Althoug thinking about it, the thought is kind of romantic...

crypto-anarachists in 2035:
Anyone building open source car software running on our beloved Linux?
I agree that this is one area, where going low tech is a good choice. You aren't loosing any important functionality.
The only non-nonsensical counterpoint I’ve come across is later models may be rated as safer than older models.
1996 Toyota Camry
Fair point. But how much do you think can safety be improved from this point onward?
Now that I think about it, it might be worth upgrading tires, brakes, and perhaps fit a rollcage inside. That might put you ahead of anyone else on the road in terms of safety 😆
lol
Car kits are still a thing.
I have a list of stuff that I need with opensource software:
- car
- robotic vacuum cleaner
- robotic lawn mower
- dishwasher
- washing machine
- fridge
- AC units
....
Nowadays I either have to buy old/cheap dumb device without any features or have some spyware gadget that spies on me and sells my data...
I'd pay some Bitcoin for that.
I hear they made those in the 90s
Buy an old 4x4 diesel Toyota… the most anti-fiat vehicle you can get
Are such things still made?
it's called Toyota Landcruiser Prado 2002, last without tracking shit... I'll sell you mine for 1 BTC
No, that's the problem
Yes! Just own a car older than btc and you should be good.
Own a car younger than btc and you are short btc.
We should start ASAP 🤝
We have that already. It's called "Any car made before 1990"
Literally any car made before 2010
Just remove all the "smart" stuff
I see Jeeps and Jeep-like Isuzus that don't have all the "smart" stuff
I was gonna say... If there are any I want to know.
