From my understanding it’s more complicated than that, but maybe I don’t know enough! A lot of times even if it’s my lyrics the composition itself is copyrighted, and parody refers to something more specific.
I love that we all bombard @SuiGenerisJohn with our legal questions. He needs to keep track of who's zapped him for retainer.
To me it’s also like, would I likely get in trouble? Probably not. But do I want to put a company in that position? Ehhhh. When I upload to YouTube all the monetizing royalties on my videos go directly to the copyright owner since they detect and register every upload.
