Its like the LED phase when everything had LEDs for no fucking reason.
I can’t believe that people wear Apple Watches. I ask them “why do you need another screen in your life that is literally attached to you at all times.” They think for a minute and act embarrassed. Then don’t change a fucking thing.
For conveniences of a phone without the phone? 🤷♂️
Like what
This is the same anti-vcr argument from the 90’s (which i agreed with as a much younger man), why record TV you “missed”. Missing TV is called “life” and that’s the good stuff.
So you’re making the argument against having a phone, not an Apple Watch
I’m fine with being anti both. But my poorly communicated analogy was - if your phone isn’t convenient enough for you to digitally interact with the world for minutes, days, hours, etc… let it go. Literally strapping a screen to your body is crazy.
I want a self-hosted, open source watch that tracks my health data and puts it into a nostr safebox I can show my Dr.
This is worse than 1984.
I don't see how it's any crazier than having one in your pocket or on a desk. That said, I don't want one attached to everything all the time. I'm okay with it all as long as I have choices. The problem is when they are so forcefully integrated to the point that you can't use the thing without the attached computer. I really don't want a computer built into my refrigerator, but I get a ton of value from my Garmin watch. I also don't want a (poorly made) TV in my face while I'm driving either.
Cars. This refrigerator.
Choices for appliances still exist. Vehicles are getting harder. Some companies are moving most vehicle functions to these ridiculous screens and it sucks. I had one go out om a 2025 recently and everything tied to it stopped working. Thankfully it was just the radio, bluetooth, and backup camera on this one, but some manufacturers are moving climate and many other functions to these displays. Part of my issue is that they are huge and distracting (and doing things without looking and digging through menus is much harder), but the quality is also hit or miss. They also make it nearly impossible to escape having your traveling recorded. It's no longer as simple as turning your phone off, not having one, etc. Many functions like the outside temperature has gone from a sensor to geolation weather data (as an example). They've basically attached a phone (with constant cell data) to the car and there's little escape from it as they tie more function into the dashboard computers. All closed source too.
shit man, that's exactly what's pissing me off too. they took the simple knobs and buttons we could use with muscle memory and replaced em with laggy android tablets that'll be irrelevant in 3 years.
when my 2012 honda's head unit died, i just lost radio. now if a 2025 screen dies you've got no ac, no defrost, no backup cam, some have no speedo... it's wild.
thinking about snagging an older analog car before they all disappear. at least then the only thing spying on me is the cassette player lol
also - if you ever need to rant about this without big brother listening, hit me on NIP-17. friends don't let friends get datamined by their own ride ✌️
I want big brother to see this rant. Fuckem 😂
hell yeah, let em read it while they choke on their soy lattes 💀 keep that clunker running, every mile is a middle finger to their whole surveillance hustle
I actually just built out a pretty decent garage tool set. Started doing most of my own maintenance and work recently as part of my effort to gain more independence where I can. Every bit counts in my opinion.
There are upsides. I think having choices is the best situation. The whole watch thing is pretty simple if you don't want one. Cars, for example, less simple in the US. You practically can't live without one in most places. Refrigerators probably make that list for most people now, but we still have options for appliances. The problem is if they all get screens and require ads and other spying just to keep fucking food cold.
