Regarding the much discussed coming Age of Abundance… Universal basic services (UBS) would be much wiser and more beneficial for humanity than universal basic income (UBI). UBS examples may include widely available: - Clean water - Electricity - Bandwidth - Safe roads and bridges - Food - Housing - etc. Discuss. #AI #Robotics #UBS #UBI

According to the "Abundance" theory, AI-related companies will become increasingly profitable while unemployment surges. In order to stave off a revolution from the unemployed and desperately poor peasants, the lucrative companies would pay a meaningful tax, which would be distributed as UBS and/or UBI.

Good question. The economy will likely shift towards energy and compute. That is, the companies that require an increasing amount of energy/compute will need to purchase an increasing amount from the explorers, producers, builders, distributors, etc. of the energy/compute. Even though the marginal cost of production will trend towards zero, the exponential increase in need for such things will be the primary drivers of the Digital economy.

I historically agree... as both a Christian and a staunch free market capitalist. But in the coming (presumed) Digital Age--which will be dominated by AI and robotics--humans may not be gainfully employed... and may not have the monetary means to provide material needs to their unemployed neighbor. Capitalism doesn't work well for humanity if humans are the weak link across all professions, white collar or blue collar.

We're getting dangerously close to left wing utopian ideas. Sounds great on paper and if implemented properly could be great... it's just so open to abuse. "They" get to decide what food allowance, energy usage is acceptable for humans. We're already starting to go down that Orwellian road and it's not somewhere we want to be!! I believe we just need to see where things go and not lose focus. Humanity will find a way. Yes there may be less white collar workers. But how about with AI if we cure cancer and other terminal illness? Then we've used it to our benefit. With bitcoin humans will be so wealthy the work week may drop to 16 hours, thus opening up opportunities for other people to get jobs. Manual labour will be around for a very very long time. And nobody is gona have a robot in their home washing dishes and running the vacuum round. It's just nonsense. First off if everyones broke like you fear who's gona be buying them?? All we know is humanity always finds a way. That is why we're so special and it's why we're here. Christ is with us. We're just about to end the fed and step into the incredible abundance of hyperbitcoinisation. Relax and Enjoy it Dr Jeff 😎

Should AI and robots "take all the jobs", and most people lose their ability to make a living, they wouldn't have any money to pay for the goods and services thus created and would be permanently locked out of "the economy". If enough penniless, unemployed people gather, one of them will offer to cut the other's hair in exchange for a repaired shoe or some eggs and since nobody has the cash to buy a robot to do the work, they'll just have to it themselves. This spontaneous new economy could only be stopped by prohibiting people to engage in mutually beneficial exchanges and if that happens, you don't need UBI, you need a good, old-fashioned, 1776-style boogaloo.

Many of these fundamental needs should be free. If we want to empower people to become informed and to have optimism for the future then these basic needs should be available to all. We have the opportunity, incentivize AI servers and Bitcoin mining rigs to fund an energy infrastructure buiild out the likes of this country has never seen before and Prosperity will flourish

I live in a country where the government social net provides most of those services to those who need it. The trouble I see is, until we move back to a hard money standard breaking out of the cycle of reliance on government hand outs is incredibly difficult if not impossible for most. Wealth gap is increasing, and we’re seeing Multi generations of families stuck on welfare , in state housing, unable to break out of their situation. There are also those who it’s been made to easy to recover UBS services. They’re addicted to it with little incentive to break out, lazy with no drive to be productive members of society. To make UBS work I think we need; 1. A hard money standard, 2. return to natural state of deflation, 3. some sort of social contract where you need to give more than you get back to your community. I think Switzerland and Singapore have good examples of public service obligations for citizens. Train them, foster relationships with people outside their usual circles, institute some national patriotism.

I don’t buy into this narrative. And I think there is strong historical precedent in the Industrial Revolution to show that fearing mass unemployment due to technological progress (like the Luddites did) misses the creativity and resilience of humans. Human wants are endless, so if food and shelter becomes increasingly abundant and cheap due to AI and robotics advancements, then humans will simply focus their efforts higher up Maslow’s hierarchy. But these humans will still provide value to other humans who will be willing to pay for that value. I use AI tools everyday in my software work, but I do not fear that these tools will replace me, just like a carpenter isn’t worried that his nail-gun is going to take his job.

There will never be abundance. We can never have enough. Who will distribute these services and who will pick up the tab? How will those kind of things be determined?
