Forgive the ignorant question, but what’s the best way to follow news here? Do I create lists? Which functions are the best to use?

I'm sure a lot of us still endure Twitter (despite the anguish) to follow news feeds which are not yet here. Hope Matt will help us #grownostr in this area. 🙏 #[2]
Yes search needs to improve, and is on roadmap. Try using nos.today for search. You can search for the topics you are interested in without hashtags there.

Sorry. I can can irritate you if it makes you feel more at home. What the hell is wrong with you? Hope that helps.
Unfortunatly they'll probably come around as the network matures so enjoy the growth period while we're here! Nostr is gonna change the world.
You probably won’t get the large engagement you got on Twitter, but everyone who engages will be a real person and nostr is full of the coolest people in the world. Plus you’re gonna get Bitcoin and shakas instead of worthless likes 🤙⚡️
OK, I didn't see this one coming so soon. #nostrwelcome Matthew, glad to see you here... outside of walled gardens of corporate social media networks.
If you are wondering if Nostr has legs, this thread should remove all doubt. #[1] #grownostr #newstr #[0]

So new, not familiar with what you mean by filter in this instance on here.
Okay, I'll bite. What exactly is pissing off all the people about Bud Light? Are they really so outraged that there's a trans woman in one of their ads? There must be more to it. I don't drink factory swill, so I guess I've been boycotting for decades, but I really don't get what's up Kid Rock's ass.
Are you using Damus? I think other clients allow you to filter global too. Basically, you add some relays like nostr.land and nostr.wine, and you can filter the global feed by only viewing notes submitted to those paid relays. However, in order for me to see your notes in global, you would have to pay for the relays. If I follow you (I am) then I will see your notes regardless, because your regular feed pulls from all the relays you’re connected to. You probably need to add some more relays though. I’m only seeing 4 on your profile. You can visit my profile and just copy my relays.

Love that you’re here! I use it how I used to use Twitter. Find people, look at the list of people they follow and then follow based on interests and topics. Keep in mind that bitcoin twitter moved here first, but others are arriving daily because this is the best free speech platform. As you get into it, you’ll also discover that nostr is more than just free speech.
I just started using nostr an hour ago and have the same question.
#[2] has its Twitter feed fed to Nostr. Some fintwit people like #[3] are here You need to find a client that suits you best, they are all under heavy construction still and none of them are perfect.
This could be your thing on nostr. Also, second what other people said in the thread. I do like #[2] for finance and economic topics.

Unpopular opinion, there is not a lot of signal here (yet). The protocol IS the signal.
smooth app too thanks for pointing to the platform - wouldn't have found it without your email saying yes this is you
You should look into running your own relay and post everything you write to there and multiple other relays like damus. This way you will always have a backup of your own data and can move it somewhere else quickly in case you'll ever need that. Just tell ppl your relay address and they can pull information directly from the source and also from other places 🙂

I don't know how familiar you are with public key cryptography but it can be tempting to think about your private key like a password, BUT YOU SHOULD NOT. It's actually more like your entire identity because if someone else gets control of it, there is no "authority" to appeal to to regain control of your "account". In fact, you have no account - just the identity conferred by that private key. You are going to be a target, so before you build a big following which would be painful to have to rebuild from scratch, if you are not an opsec person you might want to get some basic security tips from someone you know who knows their way around (maybe @jack or Ed Snowden).
That's right! No news. Why have news? It's depressing and pulls us down rabbit holes. Just be, we love like that.

Can’t answer better than that! The News is here. 😆
For years now I’ve been conflicted about Twitter. The experience was mostly not fun at all, but the functionality was still very high for my job. The manipulation has started to outweigh the benefits by a lot I think.

And a fine job you do sir and very thankful for it. Just catching up on the happenings of the last week, and excited to read your latest on Substack.
Platform scalability is and will always be terrible for the social media end user experience. Most of the issues I see is the lack of real time interaction like we had with IRC. A user shouldn’t be able to jump into a conversation on their lunch break 6 hours later because they see a post they don’t agree with. Users should be forced to respond in real time or lose access to the conversation.

Each service is going to have its own character. There may be a place for "platforms" like Notes, Locals and Twitter but decentralized services are badly needed.
They came after you hard for Twitter files but don’t hide—come here for the quiet—stay there for the engagement 🤷🏻‍♂️

Should have a choice between static and dynamic engagement, but perhaps when the algorithms are completely removed, more of the dynamic is allowed to foster.
Matt you suck! Totally fake reporter…. Just kidding. Thank you for being the lightning rod in the TwitterFiles. You should be proud of the role you’ve played so far in the #GreatAwakening Keep up the good work 👊🏻
I’m totally going to agree with you later this week sometime…
i clicked on this Habla Mews link and it took me out of the Damus client and on to a web page where most of the news was about Nostr. Hmm…. had an easier time finding sources on Mastodon. also, there’s no indicator under a post showing the number of replies it has gotten, so having to click on every post to see of it’s been commented on is kinda sorta…not fun. will keep experimenting here but for now, very tepid reaction.
Hey Matt, just throwing this out there….a semi-autobiographical book accounting the lead up, revelations and aftermath of your Twitter/Musk experience would make for a very interesting read, and a thoughtful Christmas present 😉

I am right there with you Matt. I have been on twitter a very long time, it is a important source of news, but with the plethora of trolls, bots, and seemingly much more angry people in general. I am always wrestling with the benefit vs reward ratio. I speak only for myself, as I only have been on Nostr a couple of weeks or so. Here is my personal summary of this platform called Nostr, so far: 1. Very friendly and most try very hard to keep it this way. (I like this a lot) kind of like tribal in a way. This makes it so pleasant to be here. 2. Bitcoin Maxi here. Bitcoin seems to be a primary core here. As well as privacy (somewhat). I realize a lot of folks may not be so crypto freedom focused but this is core here. (I like all the freedom I can get) The lightning network is wonderful and integrated here, which is huge, I just wonder what will happen when the gov. tries to regulate and demand full kyc here. I will watch. (I hope people resist more gov. regulation) 3. News here is lacking big time.. but Nostr is growing very fast I believe, and hopefully it will keep its zen like happiness for a long time. While adding news. Serious respect to you.

The nostr protocol should integrate something that allow Discord-like "channels" - maybe call them doors - tied to public keys. It would be a great integration for dynamic chat rooms and a great harkening back to mIRC. Let the naming convention for channels be whatever is typed between double hashtags, i.e. ##first door## for instance. The user/public key can carry these "doors" or "channels" with them, allow other public keys in, moderate them, remove them, etc.

Imagine the user interface possibilities with that.
People have trained to trust their silos and truth doesn’t matter to most. I spend a little defending you and TF. People’s arguments and spun descriptions to trash you. They just repeat the same stuff. I’ve been following you off and on since ‘04. Right now your podcast is the only news I follow.

The a key's permission to a note with 4 hashtags indicate a message only to those allowed to them.
Def remember a few mornings coming down off acid while my roommate and I would take turns reading aloud articles from the exile and the great shark hunt. Ames signed a copy of my roommates book with “stay mean” and I think that fits rn. The paranoid side of me thinks the CIA is gonna dose you with the California Sunshine.
Came here from twitter because you tweeted the link. Anyone else?
So very true. I keep using it but I feel forced by some social pressure to maintain it. Slowly starting to not give a F 😅

This is an interesting thought. I have been thinking a lot about how to use nostr like IRC. We need a nostrChat client... 1. client allows user to invtive npubs starting a chat 2. the user that starts the chat hosts it peer to peer: no relay needed, anyone can be invited 3. everyone that joins the chat is direct connected to the starting user's session (database) 4. database can be cleared after the chat ends, or the session can be passed off to any other user in the chat for them to host it. Not sure if the protocol supports all that, but it should not be too much to add a nip. My idea of doing this peer to peer keeps from adding cost to the relays. Best way to code this would be an api that could be added to any client.

Hey Matt. Good to see you here. I must say that as a non technical type my confusion about this platform is … high. Twitter I understand. This app makes me feel as if I was airdropped into a very foreign country. If you figure it out please enlighten the rest of us. :)
Still waiting for lists on Amythest (android). Shouldn't have to wait long as features are added at an incredible pace. Just start to familiarize yourself with the decentralized project first to get your head around how big a disruptor this project will be. Here is a good place to start. Resources:

I am not familiar with the protocol nor a programmer and do not know if nostr can be modulated, but would there be any interest in seeing a development where keys can create channels or chatrooms and send certain notes to joined key channel guests, with moderation options and such if desired? Perhaps the channels could be created and represented by text between double hashtags.
Absolutely love your work and will follow and repost your posts.

People seem to go on twitter with the intention to pick fights and read things in the least charitable way possible. At one point one could read twitter replies and get some value from them, but nowadays it's just an endless stream of attempts at "sick burns".

You’re rather on NOSTR (Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays). NOSTR is an open protocol, designed to create a censorship-resistant social network. There’re 2 components: clients and relays. Each user runs a client. Anyone can run a relay. Clients fetch data from relays of their choice and publish data to other relays of their choice. Everybody runs a client. It can be a native client, a web client, etc. Damus happens to be a client for iOS/MacOS, and other people using different clients for their devices OS can access and engage with your Notes/postings on the NOSTR. List of clients: note1xa2g33fh3hf2p7rn27xumkrcmp457jp6qvgrq8sj8fcl48skv2usgtsll4
This may help you, but it’s still early days. With that said, with a bright future I’m sure.
Please also stay on Twitter! Tried this for a few months…your audience needs both for a while

You can follow a hash tag, at least with Amethyst client for Android. That isn't a full solution but one tool currently available.
Hi Matt, same with me. Just got my other Twitter account suspended because I sent a DM to a person. I should authenticate my account with a phone number. No, I will not do that. Rather switch to Nostr...
Hi Sasha, I am a starter here on Nostr. But I like it from the very beginning. For me, the things I need are now available. Uncensored social media and being my own bank with bitcoin. This is the revolution I was dreaming of for so many years...
Depends which client you use. So far there aren’t many who offer list functionality. I go by hashtags or sometimes there are bots who share stuff from Twitter on here as well. Most of them are Bitcoin focused though. Kinda like most content on here 😅 Hope for more normal news bots or functionality though.
