Rabbits eating mulberry prunings I've pruned this mulberry tree several times this season to feed the rabbits. I barely made a dent in it this pruning and the rabbits got more than a full meal out of it. I'll keep pruning it until there's nothing left going into the fall. It was a volunteer in the food forest so I'm not concerned if I kill it. Eventually I might want the space for another fruit tree anyway. For now, it's growing into rabbit meat. #permaculture #permies #homesteading #grownostr #selfsovereignty #meshtadel #rabbit #rabbitcolony #forestgarden #foodforest View quoted note โ†’

My sheep eat poison ivy, so I assume the rabbits will too. I'll tell you what they definitely don't like, stinging nettle. It's the only thing they don't eat in the cannabis garden.
Pollarding the "weed" trees in the food forest image Inevitably, unwanted trees grow wild in the food forest but instead of cutting them down entirely to remove them, I pollard them. By pruning the tree back to the main trunk, I get food for the rabbits. If I kill the tree, okay but if it lives then it will grow even more food for the rabbits next season. image I do the same practice with the seedling apple trees that get too large to use as grafting rootstock. I didn't realize how convenient planting them next to the rabbit colony would be. Each year I cut all the branches of each of the trees and toss them into the rabbits. Each year the apple trees have more branches to cut. #permies #permaculture #homesteading #grownostr #meshtadel #selfsovereignty #forestgarden #foodforest #pollarding #returnsurplus #nonextraction View quoted note โ†’
Thanks, I like stringing notes together with the quote feature to share the progression of the systems throughout the season. Or like in this instance, I can use an old note to give context. I like how the strings of notes can take you down a mini rabbit hole directly in the main feed too.
Here are a few examples of the harvest last year from the food forest. Hard to get a sense of everything in there because it's all so tangled up and wild looking. View quoted note โ†’ View quoted note โ†’ View quoted note โ†’ View quoted note โ†’ View quoted note โ†’

Garlic is planted in the food forest The garlic is planted and munched with straw donated to the homestead by a generous permie bitcoiner from the southwest Michigan meetup. The garlic is planted in the row which the potatoes were harvested from earlier in this summer. I didn't have time to add any additional compost so this planting will be a good indicator of the strength of the soil in the food forest with out any additional inputs. All I have to do now (besides weeding a couple times) is wait until harvest next July. #permaculture #permies #homesteading #meshtadel #selfsovereignty #grownostr #foodforest #forestgarden #garlic #garden #gardening #garlicstr #subsistancecrop View quoted note โ†’
