Food forest harvest: peaches. First year this peach tree has fruited! This Flamin Fury peach seems to be an earlier variety than the other two variations we have that started fruiting last year. This tree almost died back to the ground when I planted it a few years ago and it's come back strong so I'm impressed that it is already producing. Been picking a few ripe peaches here and there for the last few days but it seems that now is the time to harvest the majority of them. We don't do anything as far as treatments go to our fruit trees. Last season we noticed if we tried to wait until most of the peaches reached peak ripeness on the tree that we lost many to mold. This year we are trying to harvest a little early and let them ripen in the fridge. Most of our peach trees are different variations of the flamin fury variety from a local breeder that has been working on breeding cold tolerant peaches for a couple generations. You can order them from Grandpa's Orchard Nursery. #permaculture #permies #homesteading #grownostr #selfsovereignty #foodforest #peaches #harvest #fruittree View quoted note โ†’

Our peaches and apricots got a nasty frost treatment exacly at the moment when they started to bloom. So no harvest this year. ๐Ÿ˜ญ Happy you have some.
Food forest harvest: garlic Finally found time to harvest the garlic in the food forest. Experimented with some different bed preparations and had mixed results. The best method ended up being what I did last year: broadfork, add compost, broadfork, much with manure packed straw, plant. image Even though the other methods of using woodchips as mulch and only manure packed straw weren't as good, there was enough garlic planted to harvest more than last year. image I think we are going to need it with all the peppers and cucumbers growing in the garden that we will pickle. Not to mention, garden salsas and garlic powder now that we have a Bitcoin dehydrator. #permaculture #permies #homesteading #grownostr #selfsovereignty #meshtadel #foodforest #gardening #garlic #garlicstr #subsistancecrop View quoted note โ†’
Food Forest Harvest: Peaches All three peach trees in the food forest had good fruit sets this year but the latest tree was loaded. I wanted to see what happened if I didn't thin the fruit out. Some branches broke from the all all the fruit but they won't be missed in the long run. Picking about 20 or so peaches a day until they are all picked. That way if the mold sets in I will still have plenty of peaches already even if they have to ripen off the tree. Here are a few examples of the harvest last year from the food forest. Hard to get a sense of everything in there because it's all so tangled up and wild looking. View quoted note โ†’ View quoted note โ†’ View quoted note โ†’ View quoted note โ†’ View quoted note โ†’

Garlic is planted in the food forest The garlic is planted and munched with straw donated to the homestead by a generous permie bitcoiner from the southwest Michigan meetup. The garlic is planted in the row which the potatoes were harvested from earlier in this summer. I didn't have time to add any additional compost so this planting will be a good indicator of the strength of the soil in the food forest with out any additional inputs. All I have to do now (besides weeding a couple times) is wait until harvest next July. #permaculture #permies #homesteading #meshtadel #selfsovereignty #grownostr #foodforest #forestgarden #garlic #garden #gardening #garlicstr #subsistancecrop View quoted note โ†’
