Lol famous last words: "nothing ever works until I touch it." π

If only you were a good dev, this would be interesting.
You should learn to use TempleOS instead, that was made by a good dev.
So youre attempting to vibe code an entire kernel/OS?
TRUE. why stallman's vision though? you support bitcoin/monero you're already far off from what he believes
Holy shit
It's a custom desktop environment. The kernel is mostly fine.
Which distro are you using?
It's almost like people can have beliefs related to more than one topic or strictly politics.
Well you implied its not linux, BSD then?
Will I be able to play vidya games on it π₯Ί
I started my journey on Ubuntu. Then around the same time they started adding spyware, elementary OS came around and this was the greatest thing ever. I used it for years, installed it on dozens of computers including for many other people. Then it deteriorated. The lead dev had some kind of mental breakdown and much of the energy splintered into Pop_OS. So that's where I went. It was not as good as the original elementary OS (nothing since then ever was), but it was acceptable for a while. Now they rewrote the whole thing in Rust and it's fucking awful. Nothing works. I've been eyeing Fedora as a replacement, but is Red Hat corporation really our savior? I've looked at Omarchy which also sucks. Everything requires tinkering and nothing has a cohesive vision. Meanwhile the news we get is "Hannah Montana Linux is so back". tl;dr Pop_OS
Emulators, yes. Steam, probably not. But you're not the first to ask so we'll see.
Now i generally don't trust you to design anything right in terms of Nostr, and ive been contemplating a Nostr based OS for a long while now. So lets have a call before you make a bunch of things replaceable events for no good reason at all π§. After that you can ignore me anway and fuck it up regardless
Yeah Pop is total ass. I actually left it for Fedora because it wasn't working on a System76 laptop they installed it on lol
Fedora KDE right now is by far the best experience I've had in 17 years as a GNU/Linux user.
But I also hate that because IBM has ruined what little good faith RH had
Garuda has entered the chat.
But it depends on your needs. I assume you mean for daily drive on a personal PC
Hmm, FreeBSD. Been using it for 27 years, its simply the best, at least for me
Ive only ever been a Debian user, but Ive heard so many good things about fedora Im gonna have to look into it more
Arch Linux KDE here and I have no complaints other than the very occasional update that breaks something. Itβs almost always quickly fixed though and I accept that Iβm using a bleeding edge distro and shit breaks sometimes.
People can be right about one thing and wrong about others, it's okay. He's a tired old man. But what he said was important.
Meh, I'm fine on Arch, its bleeding edge enough for me. Not sure how Nostr makes an OS better...
Sure I'd be down to discuss it. Have you logged into armada.buzz ? We do community calls in there, you should join the next.
@Derek Ross when is the next one?
I'm on Slackware. It does what I want it to -- why would I want my edges to bleed?
Tomorrow!
Alright well, see ya then!
He's old and living in the past like linux π and we can build off his domain specific influence and add up even brighter and more important beliefs like free and open source money, free markets for all, etc
What does a "nostr based os" do differently than a regular OS? I'm guessing it isn't just some "networking neighborhood" type functionality in some @
application?
I'm all for options but I strongly disagree with you saying that you can't do anything on Linux. I've never run into a "I wonder if I can... nope, guess not" sort of situation with it π€·ββοΈ
Games with anti-cheat work on Linux unless the devs intentionally disable it. LibreOffice is better than MS Office. Something like 95% of games just work on Proton (with the remaining margin often being plausible with some tweaks). I've never had any major issues with Wine but I go for FOSS alternatives first anyway. I've had one Wayland breakage to date. The Rust migrations are dumb, I'll agree, but again: haven't had any major issues with it so far.
Either I (and many others) am getting extremely lucky OR the "nothing works" argument is a gargantuan exaggeration.
Again, they CAN work. The devs put no effort into letting their games work on it. In some cases (Destiny 2 is a prime example), they actively OPPOSE Linux. In other words, anti-cheat games not working on Linux is 110% the fault of the developers.
I didn't say EVERYTHING works. Just that the majority of things work. Claiming otherwise is just cope.
yes but as always "never meet your heroes" he would likely see us as his enemies unfortunately even if sharing a part of beliefs
> I refuse to give up on Richard Stallman's vision
You're vibecoding hurd?
I've met Stallman multiple times and spoken to him on the phone. He's still a hero.
You can do anything, yet for simple things you often have to work way too hard.
Strongly disagree. Linux is awesome!!!
Like what, though? Genuinely curious what gives you trouble on it.
This is why I only unite with people based on one or two issues. I don't care what his other beliefs are. We agree on software openness. I just wouldn't force anyone to adopt his preferred licensing. I agree with the voluntary aspect of FOSS
Will it ship with a decent high-level interpreted language?
Linux sucks : no I disagree on this, but I must admit it is still VERY DIFFICULT to give fully up on Windows yet ( mostly for gaming, and I have lots of old games , and not all of them are fully playable yet...). Another Distro ? ok but please, we need a real compatibility feature for windows app , and mostly an ERGONOMIC one. I'm not a developer and I don't have the time to explore all tips and code to make it work. ( WINE does suck now yes... ;) )
sad but true. cannot use ubuntu any more.... and everything u try is just so much work.
I was forced by company to use macOS since one month and coming to this exact conclusion....

im not wondering why.
but i cant wait to hear the reactions to βTrumpβs former social media guru vibe codes an OS because Linux sucks.β

A response from the past to a similar state of affairs from someone who'd already made an OS...
