Are you looking to switch to Android for the very first time? I'm here to help. Just ask! Over the years, I've been heavily embedded in the Android ecosystem. I purchased the HTC Droid Incredible in 2010 and never looked back. Since then, I've owned phones from HTC, Motorola, and Google, always using phones that allowed me to run custom ROMs or a stock Android or stock Google experience. I've compiled my own Android OS from source using AOSP and I've compiled and ran my own kernels. I'm also a former Android blogger, writing dozens of reviews of phones, tablets, watches, apps, and other services surrounding Android. I've traveled the world, attending various smartphone launches, attended conference, and Android meetups. Before we get started, I'd like to say that Apple's current situations with Damus or Zeus is nothing new. Apple does this every year or so and is always involved in these sorts of scenarios with apps, banning and censoring them. Apple is one of the richest companies in the world. You can fight them all you want, but in the end, they always win. Look at the battle that Epic Games had with Apple over Fortnite as an example. So, you've decided to give Android a try, but don't know where to start or you've heard bad things over the years and you're not sure about making the switch? Switching ecosystems is incredibly hard and a daunting task. I will not sugar coat that. I would not want to do it and I would not look forward to it. However, I hope this makes it easier for you. **Buy a Google Pixel.** Not all Android phones are equal. Not all Android phones are completely open. Not all Android phones have unlockable bootloaders. If you go the Pixel route, you'll have the most open phone with the most options available to you. If you want to run a custom ROM such as Graphene OS, a Google Pixel phone will give you the best options. Graphene OS allows you to run a "De-Googled" phone. You can read more about Graphene here: Every Android phone allows you to install a third party app store. Every Android phone allows you to install apps that do not come from Google Play. This is by design. You do not need to do anything overly special to just install an app from Github or F-Droid, etc. What's F-Droid? F-Droid is a FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) app store. You can check it out here: Where should you get a Google Pixel phone? If you're looking to buy a new phone, I'd recommend buying directly from Google as you'll get the best support. I've had to return devices over the years and the times I've had to do so, it's been incredibly easy. If you you're on a budget or don't want to buy a brand new phone, I highly recommend that you use Swappa. I've met the owner and many of the developers. They are great people. Any time I'e sold a used phone or purchased a used phone, I've only used Swappa. https://swappa.com Which Pixel phone should you get? Well, that's up to you. The latest version is the Pixel 7 line. This includes Pixel 7a, Pixel 7, and Pixel 7 Pro. The "a" line is the cheaper or budge line that doesn't have all of the bells and whistles that the other ones have. It's similar to the "SE" line with iPhone. Normally, the "a" line is the best bang for your buck phone. My kids always get the "a" line. The "Pro" version, just like iPhone would be your Pixel with the largest screen, largest battery, and has extra camera zooming features. I always buy the "Pro" version. My wife normally gets he standard version, but this year, she wanted the "Pro" version because she was jealous of my 30X zoom. I'm going to run an "office hours" Nostr Nest today at to help answer you Android questions. If you have them, come ask. If you want to help people make the switch, feel free to join and join the conversation.

That’s great πŸ€™πŸ»πŸ€™πŸ»
May sound silly, but the thing I will miss the most if I make this switch is the ability to copy something on my phone and then paste it into my MacBook. I'm guessing this isn't an option since hardware and software are not tightly coupled like with Apple?

Yup well said! Never liked Apple for this very reason. It's nothing new too... their closed source walled garden mentality has been part of them since the early PC days. They make cool innovative stuff, only to have competitors out do them in the end due to their greedy walled garden mentality which stifles outside innovation.
i toured the factory where they are made and met the original founder. i used to talk to carl pei a lot. i would never use oneplus because of their horrible customer support when they first launched.

Ugh. I’m thinking of going back to pixel now. I used to have some of the earlier pixels but their was always hardware issues, and the charging port would stop working about a 9 months in. How does the current pixel hold up hardware-wise?
I would recommend Obtainium more than F-droid: F-droid is just as centralized as the PlayStore. They just have different rules (open source only) but can easily take down an app just because they want it down. With things like Obtainium, you download the APK straight from the Amethyst repo. There is no list.

how do you know Google is not inserting secret "management hardware" that watches you whatever os you install?
PWA is not a long term solution until the OS level concerns are solved. The OS can tell your browser apps not to load URL it doesn't like. The OS must be handled first, which is what this thread is for.
Switching from iOS to Android is for eliminating censorship at the OS level, not for ensuring that all possible attack vectors in hardware are gone ...
There's still never been a better feeling phone than the OG One though. That back plate was amazing! 😍
That's awesome man. I was really impressed with their QC when Linus walked through their facility. I love android. We have similar stories I believe but I'm a little younger so I was still beholden to Verizon androids until I was old enough to move out and get my own plans. I didn't get on the OnePlus train until OP5 . But every upgrade since I've tried competitors and ended up going to the next OnePlus after a few days. There was just no comparison for price to performance ratio. For funsies let's see if I can remember my lineage: Droid X OG Droid Droid 2 Global Droid 2 HTC Evo 4G HTC droid Incredible Droid RAZR RAZR M Galaxy Nexus Moto X 2013 Moto X (2nd gen) OnePlus 5 OnePlus 7 Pro OnePlus 9 (current) I got my wife to switch when we started dating from her iPhone 4 and she never looked back. She uses a pixel 4 now. I also tried Sony's offerings and Asus Zen line but retured them for the OP after a week of use. If I was going to get anything else it would be a pixel but I love my inscreen fingerprint reader and competition is no where close to the speed. I hate facial unlock. Just my preference. I did a LOT of custom roms before I got my Moto Xs and since then I've never felt the need to tinker since phones have gotten so much better and OP is fairly close to stock android. If anyone has questions, you can send them my way too. I have a lot of experience in this field. I also did device repair as a career for 5 years so I know the hardware really well too. (It's why I used Motos so long, they have top tier engineers)
For some Xiaomi phones there is LineageOS or /e/ which are much better than the stock rom but not as fully hardened as GrapheneOS
F-droid is useful if you want curated ooen aource software that has at least met some minimum aet of privacy requirements. Its good for people starting out, not knowing how to identify credible ooen source apps. I'm curious why nobody mentions that you can install your own app repository and pubkey in f-droid? @DarthCoin β‚Ώβš‘οΈ
Had a Huawei Mate 3 , honestly best phone I ever had, great battery life, amazing camera and fast. Too bad they got embargoed by Google. Would still use it today if I hadn't smashed the screen. On a OnePlus now but camera and battery life not the same.
I don't think they care about privacy. F-droid is about open-source. While I am sure they also like privacy, it has not an issue to accept non-private apps in their catalog. The proof is that Nostr is not a privacy-first protocol but it is there.

Thanks Derek, I’ve bookmarked this thread. I’ve been thinking many times to make this step but I always change my mind when I start analyzing how many things I’ll have to change in my tech environment: MacBook Air, Apple Watch, AirTags , family account management ( small kids) , Apple TV , iCloud storage ( years of pictures) ecc….. Now that I write them all down I’m already feeling in discomfort.
"Android is the same shit" False. Don't know what you're talking about.
Shitposting aside, you are absolutely correct. The masses will never buy a phone and wipe it and install a custom OS. It's too many steps. Plus not everyone has access to a laptop or desktop computer. That's asking too much.
Its a developer device, its slow and less responsive than almost every other phone and even if you have multiple batteries they still drain fast. If you want it for just call and text (meaning no using Signal for messaging), than you should be OK. Web browsing is also pretty slow. I've tried a bunch of LinuxOS's about a year or 2 ago so there may have been improvements, or maybe the Pro is better but I don't know much about on that side.

I’d be far more likely to buy a used phone than a new one. My current iPhone X functions just fine minus the apple tomfuckery, so it’s hard to justify $500+ for new phone that’s a couple gens old right now with everything else I have going on.
Without a little suffering we cannot evolve. To mass offer ready to use "ethic" smartphones you need to full control the hardware, not so easy. Perhaps a collaboration with Fairphone.
