The way mostr nostr clients are designed, a quote has more visibility and engagement from others than a reply. There is a huge OP bias right now.

I quote from time to time because OPs choose not to engage with plebs so it feels like talking to a wall of elitism which I find abhorrent.
Not saying you do it (at all) but thought you might like another opinion.
Nostr etiquette is new to all of us.
Some of us aren’t house trained 👀
Sometimes you want to loop more people into a conversation hence the quote keeping your original message. Perspective.
There is no etiquette here. We’re making it up as we go. Do as you please. Don’t let others bully you with their twisting of your actions.
I never said seeking attention is always a negative thing
I agree we’re all figuring it out.
But I’m comfortable with the way my feed flows. Lulz alongside insightful content and quoted posts is how I find new frens
Quote posts are for engagement to your followers. Not only that. It signals to plebs your paying attention.
I agree with your analysis. But see nothing wrong with quote posting.
👻💜💜💜🤙
Different clients also handle feeds differently so you can’t be sure how things will look on someone else’s feed. For the longest time, quoted notes on Amethyst showed up as replies on Damus. It was weird.
I see no value in quotes when people have started to abuse them. Yes, at some point, boosting was better than sats, but now it's mostly either bots (80%) or echo chambers of like-minded individuals (20%) who are quoting, resulting in just noise that I don't need in my feed.
Yeah, “I’m taking this idea and starting a convo with my boys about it” is a valid use case
The 'We ' in the statement 'We are all in agreement then..' Is that the royal 'we' or an assumption? Asking for a friend of a friend who is an abhorrent 'quote poster 'type. 😉
Many times I don’t get notified if someone quotes a post, and I only know they quoted it because I happen to see it while scrolling in my feed. If someone instead replies then I always see it. Quote vs. Reply is not about one being right and one being wrong, it’s about the intent of the social interaction. If you want attention for yourself, then a quote is better. If you want a conversation with the OP, then a reply is better.
The issue is that replies are in practice a semi-private conversation between you and the OP. If I wanted a private 1-on-1 chat, I would prefer a DM.
The ability to bring other people into a conversation is a crucial part of social media and why it's so powerful.
If you scroll up to see the two people that was in reply to, that is “we.”
Good catch 👍
Yea, there are lots of reasons to use a quote vs. reply.
Yeah, what’s the point of talking... I just don't want to see someone’s dumb post "Bitcoin is the future" 50 times.
The worst are the Chinese. There are entire chains of bots here, whose feeds consist of an endless stream of quoting each other, and one bot even writes comments to itself and then quotes itself.
Most things in Nostr don't work and don't make sense. The follower count is inaccurate, deleting notes doesn't actually delete them, zaps are empty, and the author adds reactions to their own posts. Quotes are no different in this regard—they aren't special enough to show every boost in the feed as if it were the first time.
We still don’t have a MAIN app we use, there are many different clients that all have elements I enjoy. So I agree, no clear cut etiquette.
The reply then self boost is king.
Amythest doesn't notify of quote replies so I'm doing it manually thru the regular reply. 👀👇🏾

I appreciate this but most of the folks on here have moved over from Twitter. I've never used Twitter so understanding some of the etiquette would be helpful.
This will be true as Nostr grows and there is adoption from TikTokers and Instagram users where most people actually are online. Reposting on IG, for example, is the nicest thing you could do for a content creator. It gives them YOUR platform.
Interesting that here it is considered giving yourself attention.
Reposting vs. Quote posting. Reposting simply boosts someone else’s note to your followers. Quote posting creates a new original post by you to your follows that displays the quoted post below it for context.
Oh and if it gets zapped, the quote poster gets it rather than the original poster. Maybe it's not about attention but about the sats.
Haha that’s a good point too 🤣
Except that the boosted reply might appear weird without the OP's context. It does not always work well.
That’s odd though, I’d think clients should notify if your note is being quoted
Agreed. It’s still a form of sharing the original.
