Empathy has been so leveraged that it has been hard for naturally empathetic people to not become uber cynical. Even when I do try to help, I find I have to do some convincing that I don’t have another motive.

Yes, it helps to have a safe background, but you must also be willing to sacrifice your self a bit for others, and then earn spiritual satisfaction.

Depends what you're doing. I can tell you this isn't true in healthcare. Humans can only give so much before it negatively impacts them. I suffered from compassion fatigue recently and it was pretty awful. Things got better once I detached more. Too much empathy will dilute it to misery. Apathy probably is worse in general, but we need some to thrive, in my opinion. Interestingly, I watched an interview with a therapist who is an actual sociopath and her advice is what got me through the compassion fatigue. I'm not a sociopath, but adopting the safer bits has helped tremendously.

I should say in the healthcare I do. There are many fields and populations. I mostly get treated like shit. The good days are 50/50

The first para is a logical conclusion i came to when i was about 17 and was foundational to how i modelled the world and people around me. It came about via this thought process: I was always stressing out about what people thought of me (typical highschool nerd insecurity) Then i realized that: a) it seems likely my brain is not that different from other people b) everyone else is likely worried about what other people think of themselves This led me to the conclusion that *noone* is thinking about you. They are continually thinking about themselves and what other people think of them. This has driven my lifestyle of doing whatever i want without really worrying about what people think of me. It is only just recently where i realized there is another important aspect of this I have been missing: how we can flip this self-focus amongst the population to make a positive asymmetric impact.

That's why I think having a community of people you know and trust is pretty important. Instead of throwing shit to a wall and seeing which sticks, at least you are doing an integral job that nothing else can achieve

I'm maybe a tad older than yourself, so unpicking mental habits is proving a bit trickier, but I'm here for it. And to that extent I'm not in a position (mentally or financially) to give back quite yet, but wholeheartedly agree that is the natural progression.

arrived at the same conclusion a while back. the saying people use "don't attribute to malice what can be explained by incompetence", largely it just comes down to awareness. awareness of our own issues and perspectives, as well as others, being able to see the similarities, differences, and similarities in the subjective differentness. there is a lot of wisdom of self that comes from observing others and a compassion for oneself that can be realized through service to others.

Helping others is great, but people don't realize that you don't even have to go out of your way to regularly uplift the lives of others. I guarantee you, if people applied this EXACT same logic to being in a really good mood. They'd see just how easy it is to instantly stand out from the crowd, and (far) more importantly, to effortlessly impact the lives of others in the most positive way. Just by having a calm mind and being happy with yourself/in a good mood (on the inside), you're naturally gonna touch the lives of so many people without even having to say a word. It's literally no different from how people can get excited when they see a little kid playing at the park and having the time of their lives. Your energy is infectious. It's JUST like how everybody can relate to the fact that when their best friend laughs at something, they feel the urge to laugh too. Adults can elicit that EXACT same positive feeling in others without having to do a thing. It's just that of course most don't do it because they're too busy complaining about everything "wrong" with the world and worrying about a bunch of shit that doesn't even matter. It's really just a matter of enjoying the moment for what it is. The thing that children and dogs are able to do so well.
