Every account switcher sucks.
Is the Gmail app the best way to handle multiple accounts?
They allow single-click switching on the top right corner, but also allow you to see all inboxes at once and send the email from any account regardless of which one is being used at the moment.
YouTube sucks, Slack sucks, Discord sucks. Facebook and Instagram make you go to settings(!) to switch. It's just ridiculous.
It's so funny how everything is designed to get you locked into your own account.
Nostr has to fix this.

Agreed!
This would be good enough for me if I had the mental capacity to manage multiple accounts. Might do soon just for funsies.

AMETHYST PRETTY GOOD AT IT
Summed up; "Amethysts accounts tab needs better placement"
I don't even see how to add a new account on their android app. π€
Right? This whole thing sucks.
Does it allow you to share as another account? Or do you have to copy-paste things around?
I just created an npub to post pictures of my dog. Just found out my extension won't allow for 2 private keys.
I think we still have a lot to do. You should be able to post as any account. Boost as any account, like as any account. All without leaving the main feed.
Yep, browser extensions suck.
After about 5min of thinking with amethyst open, what if you made swiping right or left, switch accounts?
(From the home screen)
Nice idea! Do you think they are different feeds or can you see a merger of all feeds in one as Gmail does?
Yes, if by share you mean post, no copy/paste needed, complete app switch.
It is like having multiple Primal apps. Relays change, you can post as another account, as it you are using your primary one.
I'd say individual with an option to enable a mixed feed in settings.
Nice! Do they merge multiple feeds as one as well?
That they don't do.
tbh, that would be confusing. I personally won't want that.
I am getting more convinced that this idea of switching things around doesnt make any sense.
You would prefer to have one feed for all accounts, and make the user select which account they are posting from at the post/like/reshare/zap level?
I don't want my accounts to be so easily intermingled. That's why I have separate accounts. I think the way Amethyst handles it, for example, is my ideal way of handling account switching.
Of course, having settings that allow one to customize account switching would be nice so people can have a tailored experience.
I do it by creating individual browser profiles.
Would feel similar to notedeck wills been working on?
I don't know if that's what he is making but the idea is to not even have an account switcher. You should be able to like, zap, boost as any account, in a single click without evereaving the mixed feed.
I like the approach in Nostur. You can easily switch to a different account in the side menu. And also have the option to reply as any account you are logged in with, without having to fully switch to that account.

Yeah! That's next for us, but I am thinking on a single feed for all accounts. You could choose to see just one or see everything as a whole.
Likes, boosts, zaps, reports, etc... they all can be account based.
Sounds like a headache. Still have to choose what account to do what from while on the mixed feed when liking, zaping, etc. Like an annoying pop up is what I'm imagining.
"What account did you want to like this post from again?"
Swiping left or right to change accounts individually I think is the best option.
Then users can manage lists(maybe make them shareable between npubs) for mixed feeds?
Either way I see choosing what actions are from what account each time very annoying.
I think amber fixes this? Just needs a feature?
Not ideal. But better than pasting the nsec every time you change profiles
Works well for me, each one has its own Alby or nos2x extension settings.
You know simplelogin?
Maby there could be something like this, bit with nostr keys and local.
I am personally worried that someone could easily identified that those accounts belong to one entity that way and I would look for ways to avoid it.
In my view, switching accounts on these apps is one of the easiest and smoothest gestures ever.
On Instagram, you can easily switch between multiple accounts by tapping your profile icon in the bottom right corner. If you have multiple accounts added, you can 'swipe' or tap on your username at the top to switch between them seamlessly on mobile.
Similarly, on the Gmail app, you can switch between accounts by tapping your profile picture in the top right corner. This allows you to quickly select and manage your different email addresses seamlessly on mobile.
Unfortunately, I've stopped using these apps because I advocate for freedom tech and value privacy. Itβs the best feeling ever to be part of the #nostr community!
Oh, and speaking of account switching, Telegramβs setup is dope! You can switch accounts hella fast in the settings page, and the comment section on channels lets you slide between accounts seamlessly. It makes managing multiple profiles a breeze!
Instagram is holding profile icon than switch.
I dig it. This can be very powerful.
Proton mail works really well
It's behind a paywall tho.
Account switcher? What's that?
That sounds like a fun approach. Looking forward to trying it!
Problem is if I see a note on my feed from AccountA, I want to boost it from AccountB, but not follow that profile. It's likely more than 10 clicks to accomplish that, then more clicks to navigate back to your starting point. Some folks would just forego the boost & move on, which is very suboptimal.
FairEmail handles multiple accounts & identities well. I stay on it's unified view & routinely toggle the sending identity when I send or reply to something.
So account switchers are better. Nostr is still early and has plenty of catch up to do.
FB and IG have the best UX. It couldn't be simpler than that.
Also: there is a reason why people want different accounts. They don't want the multiple accounts "merged" into one. One switch to move the whole context to another account.
Making such a thing easy would be suboptimal for me because of my reasons for having a separate account. That's my point. A good middle-ground would be to just have account switcher settings. I say 'just' without understanding the complexity of doing such a thing.
So that is a problem for you but the whole point for me. I can see something like a long press that has a popup for which account you want to boost for or whatever, but I'd prefer to have that as an option that can be disabled.
Fork the project & start ripping things out if you don't want them. The account switcher at the bottom works. But I'm genuinely curious what the reason for your sepwrate accounts is, that a new long press toggle would somehow inhibit your experience π€
