Tomorrow I have to fire someone that has been in the company for 17 years. I have been here for merely 1, and worked alongside that person every single day since - hghs and lows. My manager (the director) has been wanting to fire this person since day one, and now I have to do it while my manager gets to have cute chats with him showing him support in this situation as if this was my doing. I remain positive and seeing the good in people, but tomorrow won't be an easy day. Tougher when you believe in Karma. Let's see how things unfold. Sending love to you all πŸ’œ

I'm so sorry, and I second look for another job. That manager is avoiding the hard part of their role and disrespecting both the person about to be fired and you. It won't get better πŸ«‚ For a lighthearted distraction, here's a story about the one and only time I had to fire someone. Once upon a time I was head elf at the Santa's workshop on the White House lawn. I went by the name "Glitter Bell" back then, and it was a wonderful job. Until one of my fellow elves got dumped in their normie life and could not maintain character at the North Pole. Just imagine waiting in line with your child for a picture of Santa, when one glitter encrusted elf starts sobbing and telling the dirty details of an early 20s relationship complete with what made it worth while πŸ†. I kept on telling her, there's no crying in the North Pole! If you need to cry go in the back and wrap presents until you can wrap it up! Alas she would not. Eventually she did her sobbing confessional routine to a Secret Shopper and corporate demanded her immediate termination. And who's going to do that, Santa? Pfft. Men are lazy. Besides he was the star. It came down to me, the head elf. So we went into the workshop and I laid it out. She accused me of being inhuman, which, duh, I'm not human I'm an elf. She accused me of lacking emotions which, again, I am an elf all I know is the holiday spirit and joyous caroling. She did not find any of this funny although I found it deeply funny 🀣 At the end, there was a fake-snow fight. Christmas ornaments were smashed. There was so much screeching and high pitch giggling (I stayed in character) that security had to run over. I cannot emphasize what a weapon glitter can become when wielded by angry elves. She did leave that day, but also I was not asked to return when the event restarted again the next holiday season. I regret nothing πŸ¦ŒπŸ€ΆπŸŽ…πŸŽ„β˜ƒοΈπŸ€‘πŸ€£ image

I don't know what your options are, but could it be better to talk to this person in advance and warn them in advance that they're going to get fired, but if they choose to quit instead, it could look better on their resume? I've never had to do this, but I imagine the Golden Rule could help. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the individual when it comes to the well being of a company. If one person is dragging down the operation, that could cause the operation itself to become disabled and cease to provide an income for everyone. In that way, a bad day for one is mercy for many.

Curse of an HR? Is it your position? Hmmmm... when I was holding a high position I would never allow my Hr to do it alone. Its me who talks and HR just goes through necessary details to make it lawful. Thats it. To even do that I suspect your GM is not going to last either. Lol. Its your responsibility as a GM to deal with it first. Head to head then send to HR office. At least that was how I was tought. 🀯πŸ₯³βœ¨οΈ

Not quite that - I totally see why it may sound like it but I probably wouldn't have the stomach or the hierarchical position to do such thing. I work as HR manager in a small restaurant group where very much almost all decisions run through the owner of the company when it refers to management, and the person to be fired in question is a Head Chef. Truth is, there were many reasons to fire the HC, but it was the "washing hands" from the situation what I didn't quite appreciate.

Although there were multiple reasons to fire him on the spot, in the end the director softened up and agreed to a final written warning. However, the person going through disciplinary spent the whole 45 minutes I spoke with him, still blaming everyone else like he did during the disciplinary hearing, and taking no accountability for his actions - almost like he hasn't been the head chef of the same kitchen for 17 years and was a martyr instead. I sympathised with some things he said at the time and the fact he had been waiting on an outcome for a few days, but in hindsight I was way too nice πŸ˜…

You are too precious πŸ’œ I kept wondering if that conflict at work actually happened hahaha but regardless, I could picture every second of it while reading it, seeing the kids queueing and potentially hearing that all, it cracked me up πŸ˜‚ you did well keeping things light-hearted, what's an elf to do?! I'd hire you again hahaha Thank you β™₯️

I appreciate your words so much ❀️ you're absolutely right. Regarding the first part, in England that's called a "protected conversation" which pretty much is what my manager had on Thursday. The person being disciplined sees everyone else as the ones to blame for his lack of leadership and has a strong victim-mentality, so wouldn't just quit. But my manager wanted to get him to quit rather than fire him as if he was fired it was for gross misconduct which means direct dismissal, and he didn't want to leave him without a job overnight - even if there are several reasons for it. Ultimately he was not fired but last minute got issued a final written warning instead, and gave him the chance to still resign, but made it clear the smallest misconduct would get him fired without notice. Regarding the second part, it's 100% correct. This person, unfortunately, needs to leave. He's been given multiple chances in his journey and there has never been sustained improvement regardless of the support he has received. He's thrown his whole team under the bus instead of taking the slightest accountability for the issues, when he is the head chef.

Yeap I'm on it! My manager isn't inherently a bad person tbh, but his ways of managing are far from the leadership I appreciate and respect - and ultimately, respect is earned, not given.

Curse of a HR indeed πŸ˜‚ I have 10 years of restaurant management behind me, in quite big companies, so I absolutely agree with how you see things! And your process is right. This situation is slightly different though - well, the overall structure of where I currently work is. Given it's a small business, a small group, where there has been no HR for 17 years until I got hired last year, and only recently Head Office is growing past being the owner and an ops manager, boundaries between roles are not clearly defined and until recently noone was experienced in managing employee relations 'by the book'. So the owner is trying to step away but still quite involved in ER when it's about managerial positions.

That scenario also looks familiar to me. Was a manager of entertainment centres with restaurants, casinos, clubs you name it. It had also those periods. Remember quite well. When our first hr handled thing in the beginning with owners and GM. Very I would say similar situation... Well hold on in there, be strong πŸ’ͺyou are one of those first pillars of their growth.
