ReplyGuy spam sucks, however it's allowing for the emergence of a stronger and more robust Nostr. If we have a wide open communication protocol, that means that anyone and everyone can participate if they choose to do so. ReplyGuy is nothing. Trust me. It's so insignificant compared to what's coming in the future. ReplyGuy is a wake-up call to developers, but also to users too. None of us should be complacent when we need to be vigilant with our social communication. This is a mere scrimmage for what's coming down the road. Use this time to build solutions. Use this practice game to fine tune your relays. You can choose paid relays or choose smaller community relays, such as those built on WoT or other metrics. We have a lot of choices for paid relays. Maybe you'll use @Mazin's wss://nostr.wine or @semisol's wss://nostr.land as your paid relays. You can find more at https://nostr.watch by @sandwich. What are WoT relays? These are a semi-new concept. They can be invite only or they can be constructed via a person's personal Web-of-Trust follow list. For example: You use use wss://pyramid.fiatjaf.com by @fiatjaf if you are invited by an existing user. Additionally, you can use wss://wot.utxo.one or wss://nostrelites.org if you're in the Web-of-Trust of either @utxo the webmaster πŸ§‘β€πŸ’» or myself. (Meaning one of us follows you or one of the people we follow follows you, going one layer deep in our social connection.) More WoT relays will pop-up or already do exist. As the outbox model grows and gains popularity, smaller community relays will become the normal way that people use Nostr the most, IMO. If you're a relay operator that's combatting spam, feel free to shill it down below in the comments.

You can join my relay if you like wss://zap.watch - No payment needed. All you need is a semi-established feed, drop me a DM and I’ll add you. I will even clone your notes from other relays so you have a back up on mine if you want. πŸ˜πŸ‘
Can i get invited WoT please?

Please note I manually review all feeds before whitelisting. If your feed is spammy (as in high volumes of the same note over and over etc, not just lots of notes in general), unfortunately I can’t add you in.
This is really good stuff, we need to take this opportunity to build better resilience in to the Nostr network. I think the paid relays aren’t going to be enough, they make Nostr work for existing users but not new ones. I think WOT are more accessible, but we need something which works for the new users. Maybe it’s new user follow lists like Bluesky starter packs + WOT relays… So much of our discussion about trust, safety, and governance of Nostr is related to content and political speech. But there’s so many more issues we’re going to face and we need to think about. If you care about this stuff, read this paper:
You are correct. These solve the issue for existing users, but we need a solution for onboarding new users too. No one wants to join a social network, say hello, and see a dozen spam replies. I'll check out the link. Thanks.
Yeah, just like we need ways to find a bunch of content which interests people. So we answer the question, is this a place where i feel comfortable. The new user experience is really different than what we all get as existing users on Nostr.
Hey Derek, can you give me a hand here? I'm definitely up for paid relays, and looking at your 2 proposals (nostr.wine, nostr.land), it's not clear to me yet if this is one-pay or pay-per-post or something, I'll figure that out. What do you suggest? Just use only different paid relays or keep using some free ones too. Or is 1 paid enough (seems unlikely) ? Still fairly new but want to keep learning. Keep doing what you are doing, you are all building something fantastic here
Nostr.land is monthly subscription. Nostr.wine is one time pay. One time pay relays expects enough people join per month to pay off the server costs (like a ponzi scheme) or cross-subsidize between products (so it loses money).
You have to buy nostr.wine to get the better relays, like the filter or creator or etc., so it's a sort of freemium model and a lot of people are on it. Probably would be enough to keep the ReplyGuy sort of stuff out, but it's got a lot of noise, so global is kinda useless.
i have been using nostr.wine since launch maybe a year and a half ago or so. it's probably our best paid relay that we have across nostr. pay for it and check it out. it's not overly expensive and it's nice to pay for something that you're using.
no, it just means that you wouldn't be able to use this relay if the people that created it do not follow you or their follows do not follow you. this is a pitfall of the WoT model. it's great for existing and OGs, but it doesn't help the newcomers that just want a spam-free experience. i view WoT relays as one piece of the puzzle.
Ok Derek. I'm a paid member now. Since I have not been here that long I am always a bit skeptical, actually in all my decisions :-) But if you recommend this then I have confidence in it. I have contributed to good oss projects before, glad I can do the same now for Nostr
