So @ODELL gave an absolute masterclass on the problems with Musk's current Twitter approach on WBD, starting at the 17m mark. It's a great advertisement for Nostr and I recommend everyone watch it. I've been retweeting or reposting Odell's various observations on this topic for a while and so I'm happy to share this too, including on Twitter today, even as a filthy blue-check myself. Where I disagree with Odell (slightly) is on tactics. He thinks people should give up blue checks in protest. And that's a very fair position. I don't disagree, especially for someone like Odell with a purist position and a generally cypherpunk audience. But I think there are multiple successful paths on this. I have always been a Twitter fan, and my normie audience is there. I wanted to be able to pay for better UX and anti-impersonation defenses for years before they became available. Just because Musk is running it doesn't mean I won't pay for helpful services, especially if they protect my audience. Real people lose money to Lyn Alden impersonation scams if they can't tell my account from others, and I directly hear from them when it happens. It's always heartbreaking. So, I'm on the offensive, not the defensive. The way I view it, unless or until someone censors me on Twitter, they're locked in there with me, rather than me being locked in there with them. If having a blue check reduces the success rate of impersonation scams and amplifies my reach at calling out Twitter's problems, I'll have the blue check. What I absolutely *won't* do is change what I say based on a blue check. If anything, I purposely overdo it to the opposite and exaggerate my criticisms on purpose to push back against platform incentives. Two simultaneous approaches: 1) Call out the problem on Twitter. Don't give Musk a pass. Point out that a pro-freedom, pro-anonymity view doesn't match with what is going on there. Don't let his rhetoric disguise his inaction. If Twitter cares about freedom and anonymity then they will offer a paid option that doesn't require identity (e.g. the "orange check" bitcoin payment.) Until something like that, they are LARPing and are fair to criticize as such. 2) Have your foot here on Nostr and on decentralization technologies generally. In the long run, I think this is the future. And more importantly, I hope it is.

Have you considered posting on nostr first? Give the normies a 24 hour delay? Maybe itโ€™s a crap idea but Iโ€™m just brainstorming ways to motivate people to use this protocol.
Freedom tech *has to* win users by being better tech. It's never going to win on the freedom aspect alone - especially when the masses don't grasp the need. Your value to the movement is how you educate the masses. If Twitter is still a more effective way for you to reach a wider audience, then you should be on there. If a blue check helps you reach that audience, then you should have one. People who already "get it" will continue to build better tech on and around nostr all while you continue to educate the people that don't yet "get it". These are mutually beneficial efforts. ๐Ÿซ‚

My summary: Going checkless pro: communicates the problems of blue checking, actively moving people to checkless systems like Nostr Going checkless negative: increase in scam losses perpetrated in your name Compromise: keep the check for now and communicate the problems blue checking and move people to other places

Odell is right on most of the things he said. Only thing is, most people just don't care. The last few years have really been a wake up call. Some people do not want to go along with the narrative anymore. This simple statement would loose you followers on twitter. Post it on linked in and you will not have a job in a week.
Scammers can still create fake Lyn Alden profiles on other networks where there are many users who know who is Lyn Alden ๐Ÿค—

You and all the others who use the "my normies are on Twitter" defense are a) underestimating your value proposition, and b) underestimating your audience. Lead, and don't compromise. You will be stronger and happier and more successful in the end. And ODell isn't going solely nostr because his audience is cypherpunks, and he can therefore get away with it. He's doing it because it is right. His base is growing stronger and larger, and is more diverse than you think. He is winning.
All we can do is put more effort into nostr adoption. People won't move platforms until they have a reason to do so. Audiences can switch platforms if they want to. The more restrictions Twitter puts on their users, the more incentive people will have to leave. I refuse to support a platform that censors and where you are the product. In time, nostr fixes this
Excellent take as always. Glad to see you posting on #nostr! Do you have any cilantro and garlic recipes to share? Keep killing it. ๐Ÿค™

Great video and good summary. I can understand both points of view.
I believe the issue comes down to: how do I maintain my integrity communicating with people I wish to, and whose own integrity is verified? In my little brain, I canโ€™t see how this is possible without making the communication tied to private keys. The whole idea of kyc/identity verification is ridiculous to me. Just a cumbersome workaround, and open to irl exploits. Your private key is your key. Keep it secret, keep it safe. You lose, you lose.

Well said. The main problem is 99.9% of people do not care about their privacy or centralisation. A great example is email. Millions use โ€œfreeโ€ email accounts, when they know all their data is being mined and they are relentlessly being marketed too. They just donโ€™t care. A tiny fraction of the population will pay 27c a day for email privacy(Proton Mail) but most wonโ€™t. Perhaps LN will change this in the future.

One thing I donโ€™t get is whatโ€™s the difference between blue checking and any other online paid service? Substack, Google Pay / Apple Pay, Amazon, Netflix etc. all are paid via standard fiat methods and most require phone number verification too. What am I missing on the outrage?
I see your point Lyn, and maybe it's one more way to achieve the same goal. But if I have to choose one, I'm more of Odell's opinion. I think freedom is the goal and this requires effort and giving up certain comforts.

Tus publicaciones son largas pero da mucho gusto tomarse ese tiempo y leerte. Te admiro, sos increible y ahora comprendo la cantidad de zaps โšกque recibes por ello. Saludos
This type of thinking leads directly towards nazism... It has nothing to do with purism. It has to do with freedom and I don't bargain freedom!! Odell is right ... fuck their blue checks!

The two-pronged approach is a prerequisite to widespread Nostr adoption.
A great validation Lynn, and all the points make logical sense. However, when we are aware of the dark agenda behind Twitter, (which is crystal clear from my vantage point), it is a simple NO. NO means NO. And requires focussed action to move yourself and your followers ( a FIAT term may I add) to Nostr NOW. This is no different to saying NO to FIAT in currency terms and moving all wealth to #Bitcoin. In @saylors own words. It takes Nation states or large institutions to adopt #Bitcoin to enable mass adoption. In the same vein, it takes a serious influencer/s to say NO ( *uck off) to Twitter, move over to Nostr , and the others will follow suit. Do you have the balls to do this ? Either way, twitter is a path being used to control Humanity, the sister to the CBDC agenda, and exactly what true Bitcoiners are fighting against. With this in mind, is any form of "validation" acceptable to stay on Twitter with a Blue Check? The only answer is a resounding NO.
Such an inspiring and thought provoking podcast with @ODELL on Peter Mccormacks show concerning the danger of Twitter and the real implication of the dark agenda Blue Check. I enjoyed reading @Lyn Alden comments, but didn't agree with her validation thought process for adopting a Blue Check. Strongly recommend everyone watch this podcast and take the time to reflect on our ensuing actions.... especially as Bitcoiners. #bitcoin View quoted note โ†’

Again it woke me up a bit more. If we don't reject the premis of the check marks eventually we won't know what it was like to not have them. We would be even more concerned about losing access to the platforms for whatever reason and self censor. Then those check marks will be employed to censor us or "struggle" us on the outer circle to urge compliance and work their way to the inner circle, which few ever actually achieve.
