I messed up the versions and submitted the F-droid (no translation) version to Google Play. I will fix it soon. Also, holy shit, given the number of complains of people missing translations, the feature is working really well and lots of people depend on it.

Yes, it does use the internet. Blocking its access through a firewall breaks it. I would definitely switch to an on-device translation app. If Bixby can work offline I see no reason a translator couldnt.

It works phenomenally! Might I ask if you have any intention of adding the ability to pin a post on profile?

The translation feature is fantastic and should be a norm across all clients. Using other clients without this feature is very noticable and you can't help but feel you are missing making potential connections with people.
I always use F-Droid version because the Google has "push" advertised, so I assume that the F Droid has no push notifications, which I prefer. I also dont trust anything which has "google" on it... maybe you could explain on the main site what are the differences?
I got to say I very much doubted the quality of the translations and the feature all the way until I saw it implemented. The quality and its implication for international conversations is pretty stellar. ๐Ÿ‘Œ Good job showing us!
Translations were workinga month or 2 ago on the non playstore version. I installed via F-Droid/Izzy on my non-Google Android and they worked perfectly. Why was the feature removed from the non Play version?
Thank you very much, the translation system completes the people of the world. The people who ask without translation, must be Brazilians who think they know English. But I want to see them talk to a Chinese in his language
F-droid does not include Google's ML-Kit that detects the post's language and translates them on-device. There is no communication with Google on translations besides downloading the language model. The F-droid version also does not offer Push Notification because of the dependency on Google's Firebase to send such messages to phones from Amethyst's own push server. Those are the only differences. That being said, Android is made by Google. The language we code apps on, the compiler, and the IDE is owned by JetBrains but HEAVILY financed by Google as the only actual user of such language. All libraries to render screens, to work with databases, and any libraries to integrate with the OS are made by Google. So, if you don't trust Google, you might have bigger issues than just Google Play Services. If you really want to get away from Google, I wouldn't use Android at all.

Could you please release an inbetween version with translation but without push notifications, so it's tracker free? If the ml-kit does introduce trackers as firebase does then nvm
