More than 4.5 billion devices around the world are dependent on two U.S. corporations: Apple and Google. Apple has a monopoly on the operating system and app distribution. Google has outsized power over the AOSP (Android Open Source Project) and soon full control over app distribution. Apple has the power to rug users and developers at any given time. The same goes for Android, with the upcoming mandatory developer registration and the progressive closing down of AOSP. Forks like GrapheneOS rely on Android remaining open source. (The situation is different in China, but control is basically exerted by the CCP.) What is the way forward?

A REAL linux phone. Probably not anytime soon though lol. At least not one thats reasonably price and well specced
traditionally it's been running linux on commodity hardware. this hasn't been an option with mobile phones. i recently heard the argument (can't find a link) that we shouldn't be focusing on opening the mobile software ecosystem but instead demanding that we can run our own os on the hardware that we buy

I think forking AOSP once google changes it to the point of incompatibility, and going it alone from there. Maybe even having to stick to a release version indefinitely if no resources to maintain.

these are the thoughts from an anonymous source on this topic (I happen to largely agree): """ The ONLY way forward is to abandon mobile computing entirely. There is literally no hope of salvaging it, short of buying all of the companies involved and taking control of states. We cannot even produce these devices ourselves, and all of the protocols around them are specifically designed to deny you all autonomy (look into trying to do SMS from a desktop through a local ISP, for example) In the meantime, continuing to use this technology is consent to slavery. GrapheneOS has negative utility because it deceives you into believing that some autonomy can be retained with this platform, which takes energy away from actually viable solutions. The actually viable solution is static IPs, home ownership, and direct p2p networking between PCs using only the IP protocol. """ View quoted note →

Is the new oem in the market already with phones? (Non pixel) If so, Will graphene be retroactively applied to their older devices?
December 3, 2025 "We’ve been working closely with the manufacturer to resolve the final details, and we’re happy to share that all FLX1s phones are now being packaged and prepared for shipment to customers. Once this process is complete, the phones, along with their cases and screen protectors will be delivered to our warehouse, where shipping will begin. After your order ships, tracking information will appear in your order details when you log in. Please note that there may be a short delay before the tracking link becomes visible, as we receive this information from the shipping carrier and it can occasionally take some time to update."
