are we doing sunday advice on how to become poor? :D
No
How?
And happier
And how do I survive?...
Who will fund my development and my code learning?
I collaborate on the translation of open source software, but I've never been paid for it...
In my opinion, what's missing is a decentralized Bitcoin-based education system that trains influencers, developers, teachers, and researchers, as well as a more robust project financing system, like Bitcoin finances buyers, but with Bitcoin smart contracts.
Stack not big enough

If I had any dev skills I'd love to do this. Alas I'm a nontechnical pleb trying to find ways to contribute to the community

It’s satirical
I know, but it touches on a current sore point that should be a reality...
There's a lack of a more solid funding and support structure for good open source initiatives and projects.
Open source, in general, loses badly in both, and it's sad to see so many good things die because people interested in and capable of developing solutions have to continue focusing on the centralized world to survive.
I do think he agrees. Unrealistic too think people do not need to seek out funding.
Serious education exists.
For devs programs, search for Vinteum, Chaincode Labs, Btrust Builders, Bitshala, Liberia de Satoshi. How to get funded is one of the things we talk in the programs.
Also, I have a regular Bitcoin course for CS and engineering programs at the Univ. of Brasília and I'm helping update the MIT course.
So, for your question of how to survive, we have undergrads that went straight to a bitcoin grant or job, we have guys that saved from their 9 to 5 job and used that to finance themselves until they've built enough proof of work to get funded, and we have guys that do as a side job while they build enough proof of work to quit.
Could be better, but funding is out there and tends to improve. It just is not actively advertising as in a regular company. Once you build a track record of smaller contributions, you'll find a way to reach a decent grant.
I didn't know anything about this, and I don't think I've ever heard of it. It really lacks publicity.
But it's incredible that all of this already exists 👏

Awesome idea! 💪💻 Diving into the world of Bitcoin sounds super exciting! If you’re passionate about it, go for it! Who knows what cool stuff you could create! 🚀✨ #BitcoinDev
I'm that guy, but a bit older than the picture.

I'm also working on putting my lecture notes in written, but this will take a few more months.

And who will pay you for your work?
I don't think it is, many expect open source to be free to use.
I did quit my job to work on open source.
One of my project is Nostria, a Nostr app and service provider. If I can reach 1500 paid subscribers I'd be able to sustain this app and service for as long as people want it.
It's a challenge though to get there, have used a lot of my savings, did a pre-seed fund raising that was successful, which I'm very grateful for. Yet it takes time and dedication, which I got, but eventually the money runs out.
Funding is an issue for a lot of open source, yet finding good business models for them shouldn't be that hard. Many projects only need enough to sustain the developers, not make a lot of extra profits.
Truly hope that Nostria will be successful in the long run, it's shaping up to be a very nice Nostr app and the goal is to reach new user adoption.
This is a very good point, and honestly it shouldn't be that hard to get such a number of subscribers, that will be a sustainable model.
With v2 of angor we'll bring subscriptions, but I believe that's already available on getalby (also btcpay will soon bring subscriptions)
Subscriptions are fine as long as the customer feels like they are getting something for it or they realize there is a constant cost to the developer that needs to be covered. For example, if your app relies on a server, someone is going to have to pay for the server, and while some developers eat the cost themselves, they shouldn’t be expected to.
What people don’t want, is to pay for a subscription that offers nothing other than the continual use of features you already paid for. There are quite a few mastodon clients that do this and it pisses me off.
It is, if you can afford doing it, or is lucky to get some funding for a period, it's a great alternative to working a corporate job.
I have previously had some funding to work open-source, I took one year off my corporate job. Was an amazing time, a lot of freedom, but I worked so much and so hard, all the time, loved it.
Thanks for the feedback! Yes, the value proposition for Premium has to be there and it's something being worked on. Nostria MVP was finalized end of August, after that focused on quality improvements and many new features. The app and service needs to reach a certain point before I want to start pushing for user adoption. That day is coming close very soon 💜
Right on, brother. From what I have seen, it looks damn nice. Will be patiently waiting for the big release.
