Maybe a small moment for nostr, a bigger moment for vpn usage.
When was the last time that upon revealing mass surveillance, unlawful discrimination, war crimes, evidence of torture and atrocities, changed the state of things?
VPN must be the best lie ever to be told. A centralised service, used by everyone who doesn't want to be seen all in one convenient log for the CIA to read.

Do you know how tor works? I don't. I trust that millions of other people use it and seems to not have been reports, but in actually I can't trust it if I can't really verify? It seems that I get different IPS and that kinda makes me happy for some uses.

For some, at least. Is that time when people ask "is there any alternative?". Many already know or have heard about Nostr, but feel lazy enough to not use it. Others have so many followers on X or a business running, those probably will try a VPN before anything else. Personally, I feel that it's a strong alert. Even if something happen to "the emperor", the current "president" will replace him with another scum, even worse. What comes next? Seizing passports? I don't know.

I'm afraid they won't have it that easy, vast majority of relays are not in Brazil to begin with and those few that are might not even be found, the police here is way less capable that they like to have us believe when it comes to technology.

What is there to teach? Download a client -> click next next next -> search for people you want to follow and that's it! It's exactly the same as Twitter.
Techy people can search and learn the details. Normal people don't have to.
People aren't on #Nostr for only two possible reasons:
1) Inertia
2) Not enough network effect
Teach on initial impulse.
The rest is very easy, but there is a greater initial awkwardness in using Nostr compared to other social networks.

I do know how Tor works, and only an organization like the CIA could deploy enough routing nodes to spy on anyone through it... And they won't get everyone they cast their net for. So it's mostly kosher... Just don't do anything very illegal there, because they may be casting a net for you if you do.

I hope it will be Nostr's moment. I've been on Twitter trying to find people who live in Brazil and trying to get them to give Nostr a try.
If you just want to go around a censor, vpn, free vpn even, will do the job. CIA may read your traffic, but for many the point is to get around the censor not to gain more privacy.
(I'm not advocating for this as the perfect solution, just *expecting* this is what the majority chooses to do)

I thought about this and you have a point. There is THAT use where you just want to trick netflix or watch youtube from china.
But ultimately you are placing "url + ip + location + datetime + associated address + date of birth .. " in the hands of a VPN you know nothing about.
How do I know you are not CIA?
I never said there is a good privacy with VPNs, one can be quite sure selling detailed user data is a part of the biz. But many don't care or don't think about it much. The only thing that matters to them is if it gets them the content they want. That might change if there are arrests based on the VPN data, but first people will just use the easiest thing to go around the obstacle.
Of course I'm CIA, you should know, because you're CIA as well 🤣. (My imperfect english is just a "camouflage" 😉)

Lets face it, govnts can ban anything on the internet easily , without effort. Decentralization alone isn't going to help one iota. If you need an IP address to access information, its easy for govnts to kill it. NOSTR is not censorship resistant with online clients. The ONLY way around around this is Tor (and less securely, and only in some instances, VPN). The internet 'dark web' will be needed by most people to do lots of basic stuff that's legal today. All decentralised open source projects need to focus heavily on Onion and Veilid clients if they are serious about decentralizing anything.
